She needs to learn to be quiet and to stay out things that don't belong to her. SARA What right have you to decide what she can or cannot do? You are so horrid that I can hardly stand to look at you. LAVINIA (sarcastically and grandly) Oh no! To be shunned by the Princess Sara! How ever will I show my face here again? SARABut you will be a baby if you keep crying, Lottie. There, there.

LOTTIEI haven’t any mamma.

LOTTIEWhere is she?

SARAShe went to heaven, but I am sure she comes out sometimes to see me—thoughI don't see her. So does yours. Perhaps they can both see us now. Perhaps they

are both in this room.

LOTTIE looks around, as if trying to find her mother.

SARAThere are fields and fields of flowers --fields and fields of lilies -- and when the

soft wind blows over them it wafts the scent of them into the air—andeverybody always breathes it, because the soft wind is always blowing. And

little children run about in the lily fields and gather armfuls of them, and laughand make little wreaths. And the streets are shining. And people are never tired,however far they walk. They can float anywhere they like. And there are walls

made of pearl and gold all-round the city, but they are low enough for thepeople to go and lean on them, and look down onto the earth and smile, and

send beautiful messages.

LOTTIEI want to go there! I haven't any mamma in this school!

SARAI will be your mamma. We will pretend that you are my little girl. And new doll

shall be your sister.

LOTTIEShall she? (stops crying)

SARA (rising and gives the doll to Lottie) Of course. You can hold her while I tell you

that story I promised you.

CARRISFORDWell, about that time, I got very sick. I am still not better, you know.

rarely woke up.

JANETWas Captain Crewe with you?

CARRISFORDNo. He heard of our failure in the mines and must have thought that I

abandoned him. He took his ship to sea and planned to discover the truth forhimself, but his ship was lost and he hasn't been heard from again.

JANETBut you haven't given up, have you Mr. Carrisford?

CARRISFORDNo, I haven't. Your wonderful father has helped me search where I cannot and I

do hope that we discover what became of him.

MAZIEDo people think that he died?

Young Sara Crewe and Captain Crewe have been walking towards Sara's new school. She will be staying in NewYork at the school and he will soon return to India for business. He adores her and is reluctant to leave her, though he knows that his work in India is not acceptable for a child. Since her mother''s death, Sara has never been apart from her father and is very nervous to be left without him. Sara holds a new doll.

CAPTAIN CREWESo, little Sara, how do you like New York?

YOUNG SARA CREWEYou're here, papa. So, I like it very much.

CAPTAIN CREWE(looking at the doll in Sara's hands) And, how does Miss Emily like it?

YOUNG SARA CREWEShe also likes it. (seriously) We are becoming quite intimate friends.

CAPTAIN CREWE(smiling) I should buy you a dozen dolls, if they could keep you happy when I

am gone.

YOUNG SARA CREWEOh no, Papa. Then, I would have more than I could be fond of and Emily is

very special to me.

CAPTAIN CREWE(smiling) It did seem as if she was waiting for you to find her.

Sara sees the school in the distance.

YOUNG SARA CREWE(whispers) Papa?

CAPTAIN CREWE(stops and kneels) What is it, darling?

YOUNG SARA CREWEIs that the place? Is it, Papa?

CAPTAIN CREWEYes, little Sara, it is. We have reached it at last.

YOUNG SARA CREWEI don't like it, Papa. (pauses) But then, I dare say, soldiers...even brave

ones...don't really LIKE going into battle.

CAPTAIN CREWE (Laughing) Oh, little Sara! What shall I do when I have no one to say such

serious things to me?

Still laughing, he sweeps SARA into his arms and kisses her cheek.

Miss Minchin has just learned of Captain Crewe's death and that Sara is a pauper and left on her hands. Her sister, Amelia, enters and realizes that something is wrong. Sara's birthday party can be heard off stage.

MISS AMELIAWhat's the matter, sister?

MISS MINCHIN(fiercely and hoarsely) Where is Sara Crewe?

MISS AMELIA(astonished) Sara? Why, she's with the children in your room.

MISS MINCHINHas she a black frock in her sumptuous wardrobe?

MISS AMELIA(stammering) Why--what--she has only an old black velvet one that is much too

small for her--it is too short for her to wear.

MISS MINCHINGo tell her to take off that preposterous pink silk gown, and put the black one

on, whether it is too short or not. She is done with finery.

MISS AMELIASister, what can have happened?

MISS MINCHINCaptain Crewe is dead.

MISS AMELIAOh my! (slumps in chair, shocked) Poor Sara.

MISS MINCHINPoor Sara indeed! That spoiled, pampered, fanciful child is left a pauper on my

hands.

MISS AMELIAOh!

MISS MINCHINHundreds of dollars have I spent on nonsense for her--hundreds of dollars--I

shall never see a penny of it. Go, put a stop to that ridiculous party of hers. Goand make her change her frock.

MISS AMELIA(gapes and stares) M-must I go and tell her now?

MISS MINCHIN(fiercely) This moment. Don’t stand there staring like a goose. Go.

At Sara's birthday party, the girls gather around Sara as she tells them a story...

SARAOnce upon a time--long ago--there lived on the edge of a deep, deep forest a

little girl and her grandmother.

HATTIEWas she pretty?

SARAShe was so fair and sweet that people called her Snowflower. She had no

relations in the world but her old grandmother, Madame Frostyface.

SAMANTHAWas she a nice old woman?

SARAShe was always nice to Snowflower. They lived together in a little cottage

thatched with reeds. Tall trees sheltered it, daisies grew thick about the door,and swallows built in the eaves.

KATEOh my!

CYNTHIAWhat a nice place!

SARAOne sunny morning, Madame Frostyface said, "My child, I am going on a longjourney, and I cannot take you with me, but I will tell you what to do when you

feel lonely. You know that carved oak chair I sit in by the fire. Well, lay yourhead on the velvet cushions and say, 'Chair of my grandmother, tell me a story,'

and it will tell you one."

HATTIEOh!

SARA"And if you want to travel anywhere, just seat yourself in it, and say, 'Chair of

my grandmother, take me where I want to go.'"

SAMANTHAHow wonderful!

CYNTHIAI wish I had a chair like that.

SAMANTHAOh, go on, Sara.

SARAAnd so Madame Frostyface went away. And every day Snowflower baked

herself a barley cake, and every night the chair told her a beautiful new story.

KATEIf it had been my chair, I should have told it to take me to the King's Palace.

SARAThat is what happened--but listen. The time passed on, but Madame Frostyfacedid not come back for such a long time that Snowflower thought she would go

and find her.

HATTIEDid she find her?

SARAWait and listen. One day, she jumped into the chair and said, "Chair of my

grandmother, take me the way she went." And the chair gave a creak and beganto move out of the cottage and into the forest where all the birds were singing.

CYNTHIAHow I wish I could have gone with her.

SARAAnd the chair went on, and on, and on--like a coach and six.

KATEHow far did it go?

SARAIt traveled through the forest and through the ferns, and over the velvet moss--it

traveled one day, and two days, and three days--and on the fourth day--

SAMANTHAWhat did it do?

SARA(slowly) It came to an open place in the forest where a hundred workmen were

felling trees and a hundred wagons were carrying them away to the King'sPalace.

CYNTHIAWas the King giving a ball?

SARAHe was giving seven of them--seven days' feasting to celebrate the birthday of

his daughter, the Princess Greedalend.

HATTIEDid he invite Snowflower?

SARA(smiling) Shhhh…..the chair marched up to the palace, and all the people ran

after it. And the King heard of it, and the lords and ladies crowded to see it, andwhen the Princess heard it was a chair that could tell stories she cried until the

King sent an order to the little girl to come and make it tell her one.

SAMANTHADid she go in?

SARAThe chair marched in a grave and courtly manner up the grand staircase and intothe palace hall. The King sat on an ivory throne in a robe of purple velvet, stiffwith flowers of gold. The Queen sat on his right hand in a mantle clasped with

pearls, and the Princess wore a robe of gold sewn with diamonds.

CYNTHIAOh, how lovely.

KATEOh, what splendid clothes!

SARABut Snowflower had little bare feet, and nothing but a clean, coarse linen dress.She got off the chair and made a curtsey to the grand company. Then she laidher head on the cushion, and said, "Chair of my grandmother, tell me a story,"

and a clear, silvery voice came out from the old velvet cushion, and said,"Listen to the story of the Christmas Songbird."

BAKERWell, I never! If that young-un hasn't given her buns to a beggar child! It wasn'tbecause she didn't want them...she looked hungry enough. I'd give something to

know what she did it for. (to Anne) Who gave you those buns? (Anne nodstoward Sara) What did she say?

ANNEAsked me if I was hungry.

BAKERWhat did you say?

ANNESaid I was.

BAKERAnd then she came in and got the buns, and gave them to you, did she? (Anne

nods) How many?

ANNEFive.

BAKER(thinking it over) Left just one for herself. And she could have eaten the whole

six--I saw it in her eyes. I wish she hadn't gone so quick, I'm blest if sheshouldn't have had a dozen. (turning to Anne) Are you hungry yet?

ANNEI'm always hungry, but it ain't as bad as it was.

BAKERCome in here. Get yourself warm.

SARAI didn't know you were coming here tonight, Ermengarde.

ERMENGARDEI crept out of my room after the other girls were asleep. Papa has sent me somemore books, Sara. (dejectedly pointing to table and books on floor) There they

are.

SARA(delightedly) Oh, has he? (runs to books, and sits on floor to kooks at them)How beautiful. Carlyle's "French Revolution." I have so wanted to read that!

ERMENGARDEI haven't. And papa will be so cross if I don't. He'll want me to know all about it

when I go home for the holidays. What shall I do?

SARA(excited) Look here, Ermengarde. If you'll lend me these books, I'll read them,and tell you everything that's in them and tell it so that you'll remember it too.

ERMENGARDEOh, Sara, Sara, do you think you could?

SARAI know I can. The little A, B, C children always remember what I tell them.

ERMENGARDE(pause) Sara, if you'll do that, and make me remember, I'll--I'll give you some of

my pocket-money.

SARAI don't want your money, Ermy, I want your books. I want them!

ERMENGARDETake them then, --you're welcome. I wish I wanted them.

SARA(cheerfully) Well, that's all right. I'm so glad. (puts books on floor beside her)

Now let's tell each other things. How are you getting on with your Frenchlessons?

ERMENGARDEEver so much better since I began to come up into your garret, and you began to

teach me.

SARAI am glad. (looks around room) The garret would be rather nice if it wasn't so

very dreadful. (laughs) It's a good place to pretend in.

ERMENGARDE(eagerly) What do you pretend, Sara?

SARAWell, generally I pretend it is the Bastille, and I'm kept a prisoner here like

Doctor Manette in "A Tale of Two Cities."

ERMENGARDE(interested) And what else?

SARAI pretend I have been here for years--and years and years--and years--andeveryone has forgotten all about me, and Miss Minchin is the jailer. And I

pretend that there's another prisoner in the next cell, --that's Becky, you know,--I've told her about it--and I knock on the wall to make her hear, and she

knocks like this, --you know. (knocks three times on wall; listens a moment)She's not there; if she were she'd knock back.

ERMENGARDEAh, it's just like a story.

SARAIt is a story; everything is a story--you're a story, I'm a story, Miss Minchin's a

story. (rats squeak)

ERMENGARDE(gets on stool and screams) Ah, there are the rats again. Are you never afraid of

the rats, Sara?

SARA(on floor) Not now. I was at first, but now they're a part of the story. There were

always rats in prisons, and the prisoners tamed them with crumbs.

ERMENGARDETell me some more stories--they are so nice. (after some thought and a bit of

bravery, sits beside Sara )

SARAWell, I tell myself stories about the people who live in the other houses in the

square. The large family, you know.

ERMENGARDE(seated on stool) Did Miss Minchin ever let you go there to tea?

SARA(shakes head) No, she said visits were not suited to my station.

ERMENGARDEOld--cat--

SARABut I watch them out of the garret window there. When I stand on the table

under it If I stretch, I can see all up and down the street.

BECKYOh, Miss--oh, Miss, I know it's you that asked her to let me come. It makes me

cry to think of it.

SARA(cheerfully, embracing her) No, no, you mustn't cry. We must make haste andset the table. (stops to look at Becky) Becky, do you know what a banquet is?

BECKYNo, Miss, is it something to eat, or something to wear?

SARAIt's a magnificent feast. Kings have them, and Queens, and Lord Mayors. We are

going to have one. Now begin to pretend just as hard as ever you can--andstraighten the richly embroidered table-cloth.

BECKY then stands, squeezing her eyes tight shut, clenching her hands and holding her breath. SARA sees BECKY and laughs.

SARAWhat are you doing, Becky?

BECKY(opening her eyes and catching her breath) I was pretending, Miss. It takes a

good bit of strength.

SARAYes, it does--just at first. But it doesn't take so much when you get used to it. I'm

used to it. Now what do you suppose these are?

BECKY(delighted) They looks like handkerchiefs, Miss, but I know they ain't--

SARANo, they are not. They are plates and napkins. Gold and silver plates and richlyembroidered napkins--to match the table-cloth. These are the plates and these

are the napkins. (giving each bundle to Becky separately) You must not take thenapkins for the plates, or the plates for the napkins, Becky.

BECKYLord, no, Miss. They ain't nothin' like each other.

SARANo, they're not. If you pretend hard enough. (steps back) Don't they look nice?

BECKYJust lovely, Miss. Particular them gold and silver plates.

SARAYes, but the embroidery on the napkins is beautiful; nuns did it in a convent inSpain. (suddenly) Oh, Becky, I forgot to tell you. This isn't the Bastille now.

SARA(grandly) It's a marble hall.

BECKYA marble hall?

SARAYes, it's a marble hall in a palace--it's a banquet hall.

BECKY(looking around room, opening eyes wide) A banket hall!

SARANo--a banquet hall--that window opens into the vast conservatory where the

tropical plants grow--(suddenly) Oh, that reminds me of flowers. We ought tohave some flowers.

BECKYOh, yes, Miss, we ought to have some flowers.

SARAWhere can we get flowers from? Oh, the trunk again—

Here they are--(tears flowers off hat) What shall we put them in? Becky, there'ssomething that looks like a toothbrush mug--but it isn't. It's a crystal vase--bring

it here.

BECKYThere you are, Miss. That looks like a soap dish--but it ain't. Shall I get it?

SARAYes. It's a gold dish for bonbons, encrusted with gems.

BECKYMiss Sara, this here Blanket Hall--I mean Banket hall, and all them golden

gems-- ain't they beautiful?

RAM DASS and MR. MICHAELS are talking next door to Miss Minchin’s Seminary. It is cold and raining.

MR. MICHAELSRam Dass, I must admit that I felt like a thief sneaking into that garret. But--what a dreadful place to keep a child in! No fire--no sign of one. Her blanketwas so thin that you could see through it! How long has this been going on?

RAM DASSThere is no way for us to know, but all the while we are in this place, she hasalso been. The child grows weaker over the months. Her suffering is etched

into her face.

MR. MICHAELSHow does Mr. Carrisford plan to help the child?

RAM DASSRam Dass is to sneak into the garret and bring the child all of the comforts andnecessities she has been denied. When first Sahib thought of this plan, it madehim smile, and he has not smiled for many days. He said: "The poor child will

think a magician has worked a spell."

MR. MICHAELSShe will indeed. It's a curious plan, but Mr. Carrisford is a sick man and quitelonely. Having something to take his mind off of this search for his friend may

prove to be exactly what he needs. Maybe then he can focus his mind onhealing once again.

RAM DASSIndeed. Many wishes that you are correct.

MR MICHAELSNow, Ram Dass, I know you lascars can be as silent as ghosts. Can you steal inthrough that window again, and do what Mr. Carrisford wishes, and make no

sound?

RAM DASSIt can be done. A lascar knows well how to make no sound at all.

MR. MICHAELSWill it be safer to do it while she is out upon some errand, or at night when she

is asleep?

RAM DASSAt night when she sleeps. Children sleep soundly, even the unhappy ones.

When shall it be done?

MR. MICHAELSSoon. Everything is almost ready.

RAM DASS(looking toward the school) It is the child herself being sent on another errand.

MRS. MICHAELSMr. Michaels is meeting a very important client from India, who is on his way

to New York now. He contracted a dangerous illness and is in very poor health.

MISS MINCHINHow distressing!

MRS. MICHAELSSo, Mr. Michaels may call for me at any moment. If his summons comes, I

shall be obliged to leave at once. However, the children wanted so much to seethe school that I did not like to disappoint them.

MISS MINCHINWell, we are certainly pleased to have you join us for as long as you can.

(to Sara) Sara, my dear, come here. (aside to Mrs. Michaels) Her mother diedwhen she was born. Her father is a most distinguished businessman--very rich,

fortunately. (to Sara) Say hello to Mrs. Michaels.

SARAIt is a pleasure to meet you. (curtseys)

MISS MINCHINSara is thirteen years old today, Mrs. Michaels, and she is giving a party to her

schoolfellows.

MRS. MICHAELS(pats Sara's hand) She looks like a kind little girl.

MRS. MICHAELSI'm sure my children would like to hear her tell stories. Some day you must

come and tell them one. (sees doll) Oh, and what a splendid doll! Is it yours?

that large family? The one from across the street, that you make up storiesabout.

MRS. MICHAELS(good-naturedly) Do you make up stories about us?

SARAI hope you won't mind. I can see your house out of my window, and you all lookso happy together, that I like to pretend I know you. I imagine things about you.

SARAThey are only pretended names—perhaps you’ll think they’re silly.

MRS. MICHAELSNo, I shall not. What do you call us?

KATEYou are Mrs. and Mr. Montmorency.

MRS. MICHAELS(laughing) What a grand name! And what do you call the children?

SARA(shy but smiling) Well, the little boy is Guy Clarence.

KATEThen there's Lillian Evangeline--and Maude Marion--and Veronica Eustacia.

MRS. MICHAELSYou romantic little thing!

SARA(apologetically) I shouldn't have imagined so much about you if you hadn't alllooked so happy together. My papa is in India, you know, and my mamma diedwhen I was a baby. So, I like to look at children who have mammas and papas.

MRS. MICHAELS(kissing Sara) You poor little dear, Miss Minchin must let you come and have

tea with us.

MISS MINCHINCertainly, certainly. Sara will be delighted.

A note for me? (takes it and opens note downstage)

MISS MINCHINNot bad news, I hope.

MRS. MICHAELSVery bad, I am afraid. My husband's client, poor Mr. Carrisford, has just arrived.

He is dangerously ill and Mr. Michaels wants me to go and see him at once. Iam so sorry to run away like this. It has all been so charming. Thank you for

asking us. Come, children. Say good afternoon. Papa needs us. (shaking handswith Miss Minchin) Your school is delightful.

SARAYou can come out now Ermy. (angry) The wicked, cruel thing is gone! The cook

takes things herself and then says Becky steals them. She DOESN'T! SheDOESN'T! She's so hungry sometimes that she eats crusts out of the ash barrel!

SARA presses her hands hard against her face and sobs. ERMENGARDE watches in shock.

ERMENGARDESara, are--are- -you never told me--I don't want to be rude, but--are YOU ever

hungry?" (overwhelmed by the entire idea)

SARA(lifts her face from her hands) Yes, yes, I am. I'm so hungry now that I could

almost eat you. And it makes it worse to hear poor Becky. She's hungrier than Iam.

ERMENGARDE(gasps) Oh, oh! And I never knew!

SARAI didn't want you to know. It would have made me feel like a street beggar. I

know I look like a street beggar.

ERMENGARDENo, you don't--you don't! Your clothes are a little odd--but you couldn't look

like a street beggar. You haven't a street-beggar face.

SARAA little boy once gave me a fifty cent piece for charity. (laughing in spite ofherself) Here it is. (Sara pulls out a thin ribbon from her neck with coin on

end) He wouldn't have given me his Christmas money, if I hadn't looked as if Ineeded it.

ERMENGARDEWho was he?

SARAHe was a darling little thing going to a party. He was one of the Large Family,the little one with the round legs-- the one I call Guy Clarence. I suppose hisnursery was crammed with Christmas presents and hampers full of cakes and

things, and he could see I had nothing.

ERMENGARDE(with little jump backward) Oh, Sara! What a silly thing I am not to have

thought of it!

full of good things. I never touched it, I had so much pudding at dinner. It's gotcake in it, and little meat pies, and jam tarts and buns, and oranges and red-

currant wine, and figs and chocolate. I'll creep back to my room and get it thisminute, and we'll eat it now.

SARADo you think--you COULD?

ERMENGARDEI know I could. (moves to the door, opens it softly, and listens) The lights are

out. Everybody's in bed. I can creep--and creep--and no one will hear.

They grasp hands and SARA becomes excited.

SARAErmy, let's pretend--let's pretend it's a party--and oh, won't you invite the

prisoner in the next cell?

ERMENGARDE(delighted) Yes, yes, let's knock on the wall now, --the jailer won't hear.

SARA(goes to wall and knocks four times) That means, `Come to me through the

secret passage under the wall. I have something to communicate.'

Five quick knocks answer her.

SARAShe is coming.

MISS MINCHINI have never been so insulted in all my life! How dare she think that she can so

easily dismiss me and all that I have done for her.

MISS AMELIAPray tell sister, what is it that you believe you have done for Sara?

I'm not as clever as you and I am always afraid to say things to you for fear ofmaking you angry. Perhaps if I were not so timid it would be better for theschool and for both of us. I must say I've often thought it would have beenbetter if you had been less severe on Sara Crewe, and had seen that she was

decently dressed and more comfortable. I KNOW she was worked too hard for achild of her age, and I know she was only half fed—

MISS AMELIAI don't know how I dare, but now I've begun I may as well finish, whatever

happens to me. The child was a clever child and a good child—and she wouldhave paid you for any kindness you had shown her. But you didn't show her any.

The fact was, she was too clever for you, and you always disliked her for thatreason. She used to see through us both—

MISS MINCHINI will not stand here and listed to this!

MISS AMELIAYes, sister, you will. It is past time you heard all of this and more. Because of

your cruelty, you’ve lost Sara and some other school will get her and hermoney; and if she were like any other child she'd tell how she's been treated,

and all our pupils would be taken away and we should be ruined. And it servesus right; but it serves you right more than it does me, for you are a hard woman,

As SARA is being pulled out of the door by MINCHIN, she sees Captain Crewe and starts to fight back. Surprised, MINCHIN lets go of her and SARA runs to her father...

SARAPapa?

CAPTAIN CREWEWho--who are you?

SARAPapa, is that you?

CAPTAIN CREWEI don't know what you are talking about. (looks about for assistance)

SARAPapa, it is you! Papa! (grabs and hugs him)

MINCHIN, having watched the exchange, comes and grabs SARA again and pulls her off CAPTAIN CREWE.

SARA(continues screaming) Please Papa! Don't let her take me!

CARRISFORD(rises and awakes, disoriented, at her scream) No! Ram Dass, do not let her leave.

MINCHIN almost makes it out of the door with SARA and is blocked by RAM DASS. MINCHIN lets SARA go and she runs to her father who has collapsed (holding his head in hands).

SARA(to father) Papa? Don't you know me, Papa?

CAPTAIN CREWE continues to shake head and cover his face.

SARALook at me, Papa (pulling hands from his face and crying). Don't you knowme? I still know you... my heart knows you. Don't you remember me? I'm

your Sara. (sobbing)

RAM DASS moves beside CAPTAIN CREWE and places his hand on his shoulder.

CAPTAIN CREWE(looking up and studying her face, whispers) Sara?

SARAIt's me Papa.

CAPTAIN CREWESara? (takes her face in his hands and full recognition takes him) Oh, Sara!

How could I not have recognized you? You have grown so much! So differentfrom the little girl in my dreams!

CAPTAIN CREWE I am so sorry! Oh, Sara!

They embrace and continue talking and whispering together as MISS MINCHIN interrupts the moment.

MISS MINCHIN(looking irritated) What is the meaning of this?

CARRISFORDThis means that Sara is done with you, Madam, --with you and her misery and

that garret.

MISS MINCHINI am stunned. Such insults. (to Sara) This is your doing--another one of your

stories--come back to the school at once. (starts forward as though to take her)

MR. MICHAELS That will not do, Miss Minchin.

MISS MINCHIN(violently) Not do? How dare you interfere! (To Carrisford) How dare you? She

shall go back, if I have to call in the police.

MR. MICHAELSYou will do nothing of the sort. (stepping in front of Carrisford) I am Mr.

Carrisford's lawyer, Madam. I have been searching for his business partner andfriend, Captain Crewe, after he was presumed dead.

MISS MINCHINPresumed dead?

MR. MICHAELSExactly. As you can see, Captain Crewe has been found and his fortune has

been restored.

MISS MINCHIN(startled) Fortune--Sara's fortune? (turns, and stares aghast at Sara) Well, ofcourse she will return to school and finish her education. (to Sara) I have not

spoiled you, perhaps, but I have always been very fond of you.

SARA(still holding onto Captain Crewe) Have you, Miss Minchin? I did not know

that--

MISS MINCHINYes. Will you not choose to come home with me and return to your friends?

SARA(steps forward) No, I will not. You know why I will not go home with you, Miss

angrily to Michaels)
