Session 3/4 You have to have a strategy that makes sense to
staff. Most innovation processes take time and
things do not always work out. Style does matter and
you must focus (who is your target, what is your gadget
supposed to do exactly), this applies to B2C as well as
B2B
Conflicting triangle – stakeholders, customers, workers
How to manage innovation, while keeping risks
manageable, being compliant and making money
therewhile balancing the conflicting triangle successfully?

Session 8 Risk management, data and information
Wrong data You may have wrong or inaccurate data (e.g., research
report, data warheous) or your market growth forecasts
may be wrong as well.
How can we reduce risks or make sure that if things go
wrong, we do not go bankrupt or damage our
reputation ... (e.g., UBS, Swissair, etc.)
How do you manage this risk?

Session 9 Because there are laws how do we administer our
Compliance processes that we can satisfy the regulator that we
followed best practice and comply to local and international
regulation?
Good governance: Have an email, phone # of your
compliance people on the webpage (e.g., Germany = data
protection officer ). This means also that IT security people
cannot be responsible for privacy.
Principle-based standards/rules say .... Their spirit must be
observed as well as their letter
Rule-based – lawyers and auditors love it because you can
show with check boxes that you did what was required.

Session 9 How can I show that my innovation will not cause
Governance harm or result in undesirable outcomes, such as:
- children playing with my new toy getting hurt
- electric motor that is started the wrong way – explodes
- if my junior auditor oversaw something in the books ...
- if the ICE train‘s wheels crack and it gets derailed...
- if my database is hacked ....
- that my parfume does not cause harm to people with
sensitive skin
- if data is added incorrectly resulting in incorrect forecasts
- that patient tests were administered ethically and ...
- did not help (passively or actively) clients evade taxes

Session 10 Using data smartly
Trust vs. checking
Make sure that data are of good quality. Having data from
2 sources instead of 1 helps.
We have too much data and we do not always know what
we have and how to make sense out of it
Commercial opportunities = allowing people to make sense
out of their data

Session 11 Can I outsource innovation? What is crowdsourcing?
TODAY Wikipedia or user groups asking for help...:
Quality - asking other knowledgeable people to help you solve a
problem, such as UBS and Living Case
- can people crowds innovate – Bill Gates says NO but
they can help you improve a product – see lead-users
- how do people process information (e.g., sales brochure)
and how does this affect the possible success of your
innovation or failure to convince customers to buy
- how does crowdsourcing relate to information
processing

Session 11 Apple uses crowdsourcing with its Apps
TODAY
Quality Crowdsourcing allows me to get help from others, save
Compliance costs, work faster
However, there are also risks, such as:
confidentiality, industrial espionage and, most importantly,
managing the project‘s progress smartly
In turn, do you meet all regulations and comply with such
things as privacy, copyright, patents, trademark, etc.

Session 14 Warren Buffett
TODAY Manage risk by understanding what you try to invest in
rationality (understand your customer‘s problem)
does not exist
Managing your process (e.g., logistics, production)
requires that you work with suppliers, and customers.
Trust is a must
But there are risks ... Uppsetting customers, investors may
fail to understand....
Continuous improvement helps staying competitive

Session 23 Outsourcing
Friday Should you use on-shore, off-shore model
Managing data &
Responsibility How can you best decide what to outsource, where & with
whom?
Risks are such that you pass on know-how and depend on
another party (quality of service, compliance, governance)
.
You also no longer have the knowledge in-house – will this
affect innovation?

Session 23 Outsourcing
Friday Small business may outsource accounting & tax services,
Managing data &
Responsibility Larger companies could outsource IT, e-mail scanning
against malware/viruses, logistics (with DHL)
Risks are how good is the service from IT internally versus
from the outsourcer - customer is king but does it work?
You rarely save money by outsourcing but can, if it works,
get better service for the same amount of money

Session 24 Cloud computing is Outsourcing
Friday
Compliance
Cost Why do companies outsource and use cloud computing to
do so?
What is being outsourced exactly?
SaaS, PaaS, IaaS
Risks are manifold and you have to make sure that
compliance, reliability of your service, and so forth
are assured

Session 25 Using all this info from Sessions 3-25 helps to drive down,
Friday costs improve revenue and hopefully increase profit
Innovation involves risk taking (Failure, Compliance, Liability, etc.) and
addressing the cost vs. benefits issues
You must use your limited resources smarter than the
competitor – using customer data to improve your product
faster than the other guy
How can you get more for your bang of the buck
(underdog) - in order to be winning against the big guys
must be discussed

Session 25 Using all this info from Sessions 3-25 to drive down costs,
Friday improve revenue and hopefully increase profit
You can build your brand, manage your reputation but you
must take care of your cash flow
Usefulness beats usability --- and design is secondary (not
always see Alessi ) - your innovation and product
changes must help clients solve problems better
How can you use your data to get the information
needed to serve your clients better than the competition

_One more thing
2011_01_19
All is like a puzzle ...
You put the pieces together and sooner than you think you get the picture.
Whatever you do with your social media activities (Facebook, Blog,Smartphone App, etc.), focus on your target group(s)
Why is what I do of value to my target audience (e.g., clients or suppliers). If they are not interested, why do it?
No, what works for Amazon (B2C) may not work for ABB (B2B)
Sometimes social media is nothing more or less than a shop window.Show me what you got and I might be willing to buy.
