Session Two Week One

July 16, 2012 NYCC Sailing Newsletter • 7001 hampton blvd • norfolk, va 23505• 423.4500 We are over half way through the Summer program already! When did that happen?! We have almost 50 kids at camp for this middle session which is great to see and we hope that some might come back for a week or two in the third session. Storms interrupted things a little during the early part of last week but the weather cleared up nicely for the end of the week and there was plenty of sailing. Beginner Class This weeks beginner group has 21 kids in the morning and 15 in the afternoon which means a whole ton of kids are learning how to sail! Last week everyone mastered basic tacking skills and off wind sailing with some sailors getting the hang of upwind sailing too. This week the coaches want to concentrate on getting everybody sailing upwind and as many people sailing solo as possible. Intermediate Class The intermediate group this session includes a number of kids from session 1 and they continued to work on their boat handling. The new members of the group learned about race starts and race courses and the whole group worked on drills to allow the less experienced sailors compete with the seasoned racers. We hope to see as many intermediates and opti racers at the Wednesday night regatta as possible as we had some really close competitive sailing last week. Sloops Class The sloop groups spent the early part of the week familiarising themselves with the F.J.s and their new sailing partners. They took a few long trips up the river and out to the channel exploring Tidewater. They also did some race practice and boat handling work which they will continue to improve over the next week. SAILING N e w s l e t t e r This week there will be a cookout at 7pm after the Wednesday night regatta with hamburgers, chips and salad for $5. The whole family are welcome and we hope to see a great many of y'all there.
