Selecting the Right Infrastructure: Servers & I/O

Examine existing hardware Multi-core processors Memory Bandwidth from servers and network

Page 4: Session 2: Selecting the Right Infrastructure – Servers

Workloads

Workloads - Average utilization rates of the four main computing resources for a typical system.

Page 5: Session 2: Selecting the Right Infrastructure – Servers

CPU

The multi-core CPUs that come in current servers do an outstanding job of swallowing up the workloads that are running on older servers

VMware licensing is based on CPUs not on the number of cores, so quad core is the cost effective way to go

Memory tends to be the first bottleneck people run up against

Page 6: Session 2: Selecting the Right Infrastructure – Servers

Memory

For many workloads, memory is the limiting factor, and effective memory management enables more virtual machines to share a single server, increasing ROI for consolidation

Each server that is virtualized needs to have enough memory installed in order to properly support its Virtual Machines and their applications

http://www.kingston.com/branded/pdf_files/Final_esx3_memory.pdf

Physical memory is a critical component of all VMware deployments, and appropriate sizing is necessary to ensure the success of all solutions.

Page 7: Session 2: Selecting the Right Infrastructure – Servers

Networking

All VM’s share a pool of network connections Requires at least three dedicated network

connections

Failover, network segmentation and bandwidth may require more ports

Multi-port adapters free input/output (I/O) slots

Page 8: Session 2: Selecting the Right Infrastructure – Servers

Why Blades vs. Standard Servers?

Improve server management

Increase server density/support server refresh projects

Minimize power and cooling requirements

Save space in data center

Reduce cable requirements due to chassis-based internal switching up to 90%

Provide scalability for the future

Compound the benefits of a virtualized environment
