Overview

• What we want to accomplish:

– Define “Functional Training” and why this is important

• Vitality vs. Aesthetics

• Rhythm & Timing

– Discuss forces and how they ‘drive’ us

– Dive into Functional Biomechanics and what happens when we move… J

– Discover Functional Anatomy and what happens when fascia and muscles are reunited

• Explain how these 2 influence movement

–– SO WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN TO US ANYWAY?SO WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN TO US ANYWAY?

Rhythm & Timing

• Rhythm:

–– MovementMovement or variation characterized by the regular regular recurrence or alternationrecurrence or alternation of different quantities or conditions in all 3 planesin all 3 planes

– Rhythm is the MOVEMENT in all 3 planesin all 3 planes

– Rhythm is our ability to “turn onturn on” and “turn offturn off” with ‘flow’

– Rhythm is the GLOBAL view of the movement as a whole in in all 3 planesall 3 planes

– Without the proper rhythm [movement (or exercise)] we don’t get the optimal timing in all 3 planesin all 3 planes

Rhythm & Timing

• Timing:

– The regulationregulation of occurrence, pacepace, or coordinationcoordination to achieve a desired effect in all 3 planesin all 3 planes

– Timing is the SEQUENCING of the actions within the global movement in all 3 planesin all 3 planes

• Joint motions

– Timing is the REACTION to the forces in all 3 planesin all 3 planes

• “Loads” [or turns-on] the myofascial system

– Without proper timing (joint motion), there is not optimaloptimalloading of myofascial system in all 3 planesin all 3 planes

Understanding Forces…

• What is ‘force’?

– A push or pull that can cause an object with mass to change its velocity(acceleration).

–– Described as F = m · aDescribed as F = m · a

– Forces ‘drive’ the human body

Functional Biomechanics

• “The muscle-bone concept presented in standard anatomical description gives a purely mechanical model of movement. It separates movement into discrete functions, failing to give a picture of the seamless integration seen in a living body. When one part When one part moves, the body as a whole moves, the body as a whole responds.responds. Functionally, the only tissue that can mediate such responsiveness is the connective tissue.”…

Real & Relative Motion

• Real motion

– the actual movement of a BONE in real three dimensional space.

•• OsteokinematicsOsteokinematics – movement of the BONE

• Relative motion

– the movement of one BONE compared (or relative) to another.

•• ArthrokinematicsArthrokinematics – movement of the JOINT – the result of each bone’s movement

Quick Joint Math… J

•• 55 ways to get 1 joint motion in 1 plane of motion

– i.e. internal rotation of hip in transverse plane

•• 55 ways to get other motion at the joint

– external rotation

•• 11 way to get no motion – both segments moving at same speed in 1 of the motions

•• 11 way to get no motion – both segments moving at same speed in 1 of the motions

•• 11 way to get no motion – no motion

• 13 total ways a joint can move in 1 plane of motion

• 13x13x13 = 2,197 [minus 1 for no motion] = 2,1962,196
