President’s WelcomeDear SESAM Members, Colleagues and Friends,

It is a great pleasure for me to invite you all to Poznan, Poland for our next annual meeting SESAM 2014. As many of you came to our last congress in Paris 2013 I am sure that we all agree that is was a great success. We received very positive feedback regarding the venue and the scientific- and social program. On behalf of the whole EC I would like to thank you all for your continuing engagement, support and last but not least enthusiasm!

Next year’s meeting will be a very special one – we will celebrate our 20th (!) anniversary!!!SESAM EC in cooperation with the local organizing team, all committees and administration are working hard to prepare a memorable program for Poznan with state-of-the-art educational and scientific content. We will keep our conference structure offering keynote lectures, presentations, workshops, round table discussions and preconference courses. We are also working on broadening SESAM’s spectrum by introducing “special interest groups (SIG’s)” such as simulation technology, prehospital and standardized patients.Last but not least we will present a very special “SESAM history track” so we can all enjoy looking back on 20 years of our society’s roots and developments. All in all I am very confident that we are able to offer you a well-balanced mix of educational/scientific content, social/network activities and fun!I would also like to especially thank our industrial partners who have supported our society and annual meetings over the past (20) years. The exhibition space welcomes you to discover their new products and technology helping to advance our educational methods and ways to practice. Thus, we are very excited to invite you to the SESAM 2014 in Poznan. Save the dates June 12th-14th 2014 (preconference day: June 11th) and plan to attend the conference! We are sure that SESAM 2014 will be memorable and worthwhile attending.

We’re looking forward to meeting you in Poznan!Let’s connect!!!Ralf Krage, MD, DEAASESAM president

Welcome Message from the Local Organizing CommitteeDear Simulation Enthusiasts:

We are very honored to invite you to Poland for the 20th Anniversary SESAM Meeting. This Anniversary Meeting will bring together simulation supporters from all over Europe to Poznań where the first multidisciplinary Simulation Center was established in Poland. It has become a model for simulation in Poland and we believe Poznań and Poland’s success in simulation will play a vital role in assisting in the development of Simulation in other Central and Eastern European countries and will be a bridge between Eastern and Western Europe. Recently, the Polish National Simulation Network has been created to support the harmonic growth of Simulation Centers in Poland and cooperate in education and competency assessment. The Network is a unique solution to unify research and outcome goals of multiple Centers. We encourage you to participate actively in the discussions and hope the meeting helps in the exchange of information and development of new collaborations. Take advantage of the

various networking opportunities the Conference offers. Join us for the Official Opening Ceremony and Reception on Thursday evening for an opportunity to mix and mingle with friends, colleagues and exhibitors. The morning and afternoon Networking Breaks have been extended in order to provide sufficient time to discuss with poster presenters their work and to network with colleagues and exhibitors. Don’t miss the Gala Dinner on Friday night, which will take you on, literally and figuratively, an amazing journey through Poland (ticketed event, limited capacity). We are deeply convinced, that you will find in Poznań an unmatched atmosphere, both at the conference as well as walking along the streets of this beautiful city.

Roger Kneebone – Professor of Surgical Education at Imperial College London.

Professor Kneebone leads an unorthodox and creative research group, bringing together clinicians, educationalists, computer scientists, psychologists, social scientists, design engineers and experts from the visual and performing arts. Current themes include Hybrid Simulation and Distributed Simulation. Roger has recently been exploring how simulation can be used to recreate

tacit and embodied surgical practices from the recent past. Roger Kneebone has a wide range of professional interests and is especially interested in collaborative research at the intersections between traditional disciplinary boundaries. Current work is exploring synergies between clinical care, biomedical science, art, humanities and performance. Roger serves on the Editorial Board of Simulation in Healthcare. In July 2011 he received a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellowship Award and in 2012 was awarded a two year Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellowship.
