The new elementary school will be the next facility to be con- structed, and Superintendent Ed Gonzalez is recommending it be a K-6 school. However, trustee Ray Seibert is pushing for a K-8 campus, so the issue has been placed on tonight’s agenda. The board will also consider replacing the artificial turf at Me- morial Stadium. At its March 10 meeting, the board heard a staff report on various options for the new turf. The board is being asked to ap- prove a contract with Hellas Construction to replace the pres- ent turf. The cost is estimated to be $601,181, which would be taken out of the Fund 40 build- ing fund. The new system would also include $155,000 for a shock pad system. Tonight’s board meeting will begin at 5 p.m. with a closed ses- sion and will continue at 7 p.m. with the public meeting in the district’s boardroom, 1902 Howard Road. Youth art celebrated in exhibit By Careen Wong THE MADERA TRIBUNE The Madera County Arts Council will display, until April 1, more than 30 high school artworks at the Circle Gallery with mediums ranging from clay sculptures to paint- ings to celebrate Youth Art Month. The arts council’s exec- utive director, Diane Mel- lo, was thoroughly im- pressed with the level of skill sets that high school students in Madera Coun- ty have. “When people think of sophisticated skill sets, they’re not going to think of students in Central Cal- ifornia,” Mello said. “The high schools here really developed the art pro- grams. But what I see are skills sets of entry college level.” Over the weekend, a re- ception and chalk art competition at the gallery recognized the achieve- ment of high school stu- dents in the field of art. Chowchilla High School, Madera High School, Madera South High School and Yosemite High School participated in the exhibition this year and during the reception, the arts council also invit- ed student musicians from two high schools and an elementary school to per- form. “One of the goals for students who are having the reception here is to gain the experience of go- ing to the next step of pre- senting their art to the public,” Mello said. “To move their art display from their high school studios into a more pro- fessional environment is the next step.” The theme of the chalk art competition is “Spring” and students worked in Madera American opens its season By Ronald Montez THE MADERA TRIBUNE Before a rematch of last year’s Madera American Little League title game between defending champ Lee’s Concrete and Holiday Muffler took place, players and coach- es from those respective teams arrived at the ball- park earlier than normal. three hours to come upwith a design and the win-ning group gets their art-work displayed in thegallery.

Value of artMany people do not re-

alize that art promotesproblem-solving and crit-ical thinking, said TinaHolmquist, a MaderaHigh art teacher.“A lot of students don’t

realize how much prob-lem-solving and criticalthinking they’re doingwhen they’re creating anart project,” Holmquistsaid. “They have to askthemselves, ‘what colorsdo I have to use? Whatlayout should I do?’ Howdo we figure it out?”Students should take

the opportunity in highschools to expand theirartistic skills and imagi-

nations before they enterthe commercial art world,Mello said.“It is actually ideal to

be a student in CentralCalifornia because youdon’t have the pressure ofcompetition compared tocosmopolitan areas,”Mello said. “Studentshere have the chance toexpand and do whateverthey want before they goout into the commercialworld where they’ll bemore restricted.”Mello hopes to hold

more art exhibitions in thefuture to encourage stu-dents to keep their pas-sions for the arts, she said. Many students believe theart profession is a deadend, but Mello said art is

incorporated into every-thing including architec-

ture, interior designingand advertising.

Southwest Tourshowdown leadsMadera SpeedwayBy Ronald MontezTHE MADERATRIBUNE

How close was theSpears Southwest Tour’smain finish betweenBakersfield’s DerekThorn and Prunedale’sJim Pettit II?Try less than one tick

on the official scoringtime — 0.255 was thedifference to be exact. It was by that slim of a

margin that Thorn— lastseason’s defending serieschampion — beat outPettit II.That finish was at the

LoanMart MaderaSpeedway on Saturdaynight in the West 125presented by DC’s RVCenter.Thorn’s last-second

victory capped a bigevening of racing for thespeedway that includedthe Twisted Tea OpenModifieds Series, theLegends of the Pacific,SRL S2 stock cars, MiniStock Toyotas and theToyota Sedans division.“This race was all

about putting on a greatshow for great fans and Ithink we did,” Thornsaid while being inter-viewed in the winner’slane by track announcerAndy Foster. “Jim racedme very well.”Like Thorn, other win-

ners in the event includ-ed Kris Price (TwistedTeaModifieds), BrandonWeaver (Legends),Trevor Huddleston (SRLS2), Tim Curtis (ToyotaSedans) and Darrell Her-zog (MST’s).Although it wasn’t the

ideal start for the SWTaf-ter Blaine Rocha’s No. 21car was turned around byLaguna Beach’s RyanCansdale (No. 31) to be-gin the race with a cau-tion, the toe-to-toe battlebetween Thorn and PettitII certainly excited the

crowd.Once the drivers offi-

cially took off to start therace, Goleta’s GregVoigt(No. 29) was in the leadwith Manteca’s JacobGomes and Thorn — thedivision’s fastest qualifier(14.449) — right behind.Right after Turn 4,

Thorn pulled ahead ofVoigt on Lap 9 to takethe lead position. While Thorn contin-

ued to be out in the front,he had company afterLap 26 as second fast-time qualifier Pettit II(14.466) built up somemomentum and began toclose in on his respectedopponent. For the next 15 laps,

Pettit II stayed up withThorn while both ofthem increased their dis-tance from the remainingdrivers — lapping carsand getting at least sevenseconds ahead of thethird-place driver Voigt. With 10 laps to go,

Pettit II was so close thathis front end wouldnudge Thorn a bit head-ing into the frontstraightaway.Despite the brief con-

tact, Thorn continued tokeep steady as the racebegan to wind down.Approaching Turn 3

on the final lap, Pettit IIappeared ready to passThorn — riding alongthe side of the No. 43 car— but didn’t haveenough to get by him onthe bottom heading to-ward the finish line.Staying slightly ahead,

Thorn once again pre-vailed and won anothergreat Madera Speedwaybattle between the twoSouthwest Tour drivers.TheMadera Speedway

A trip to Ridgecrest, the service city for theChina Lake Naval AirWeapons Station and theDeath Valley NationalMonument, reminded usof how far advanced theterritory east of the SierraNevada is when it comesto so-called green energy. The first example one

sees is the vast wind farmon State Route 58, justeast of Tehachapi. Newwindmills have been in-stalled there over the pastsix or seven years, instal-lations that are both tallerand wider than the 100 orso original windmills thatlook like toys in compar-ison to the new ones. Chuck DoudEDITOR’S CORNER

I am a very concernedMartin Luther King Jr.,Middle School parent. I’veheard that the principal,Mrs. Rodriguez, will not beour administrator next year.It truly is a shame that oursuperintendent and who-ever other administratorswho are involved would letgo of such a good princi-pal. This is shocking forour parents and students.MLK used to be in disar-ray, a low-performingschool with lots of disci-pline issues. Since Mrs.Rodriguez arrived as prin-cipal, she brought plenty ofactivities to involve and en-courage the students. Shehas good rapport with theparents, and she has set astandard high for everyoneinvolved within MLK. Shetruly cares for the students, and now that things havefinally begun to improve, she will no longer be there. As a parent, we shouldhave been asked for ouropinions for input. She isone of the best administra-tors MLK has had. It istruly a shame the waythings are handled for peo-ple who strive for excel-lence. We need her here atMLK.WHY IS LOCAL MAIL SO

LATE LATELY?I just wondered if any-

body else is having troublewith the post office. As abusiness, we get our mailthrough a P.O. box, andhave noticed that in thepast three weeks, checksthat are mailed fromMadera and letters thatcome fromMadera are tak-ing two days when theyused to take one. I under-stand they have to go toFresno to get sorted beforecoming back to Madera, but why is it taking an extraday just to get a postmark. Also, for the last threeweeks, I’ve gotten one ortwo pieces of mail on Tues-days, when I used to aver-age about 40 pieces a day.Is anybody else having thiskind of problem?POSTAL PROBLEM EXISTSIN CHOWCHILLA, TOO

IT’S TIME TO RECALLMARIA VELARDE-GARCIA

I’m calling regarding thearticle in The Madera Trib-une by Ron Manfredi, dated March 18. I thankRon Manfredi very muchfor taking the time to ex-press the guidelines forgoverning parties, and Ifeel that we need to takethe current school boardpresident, Maria Velarde-Garcia, and replace her. Weneed to have a recall onMaria Velarde-Garcia. Sheis causing so much havoc, she needs to read the rules.Instead of spending moneyon special stuff, she needsto become aware of whatthe rules are. Recall boardpresident Maria Velarde-Garcia.CHOWCHILLA RESIDENT

HAS TROUBLE WITH WATER

I’m calling from Chow-chilla. I live in the city lim-its. I have a 15-gallon fishtank and I had about 75 babyfish in it, and I added aboutthree gallons of tap water tomy tank and all my fish died.Could somebody come out

and check our water. Some-times it has an awful stenchto it, and you can’t evendrink it. I don’t even want togive it to my dog.CITIZEN WANTS VELARDE-

GARCIA RECALLED

There should be a recallon Maria Velarde-Garcia,on Al Galvez, on Fernan-des and Garibay (schoolboard members). If anyoneknows whether there willbe a meeting, please put itin the Tribune as soon aspossible.BOARD BEHAVING LIKE

KINDERGARTENERS

I just finished readingthe comments on theschool board fromMr. RonManfredi. It’s beautifullywritten, and I hope every-body has read it. I’m so dis-appointed in the schoolboard. I’m a retired teacher, and this board has been inchaos since Julia O’Kaneretired. I wish that wecould recall this board. They’re behaving likekindergarteners, and I amembarrassed by them.

OBSERVER SALUTESBOARD MAJORITY

I’d just like to commenton the fiasco that’s going onwith Madera Unified. I’dlike to salute Mr. RobertGaribay, Al Galvez, Mr.Fernandes and Maria Ve-larde-Garcia for having thecourage to stand up andvoice their opinions on thisissue of building new highschools and other issueswithin the district. I thinkit’s a sad commentary whenboard members can’t speakup without becoming pub-licly ridiculed. It seems tome like that’s why we hiredthose people, why we putthem in those positions. Idon’t think Robert Garibayneeds to go through anykind of training. He’s beenon the board for quite atime, and he had thecourage to speak out. Thoseare the kind of people wewant, people who questionthe integrity of the superin-tendent. I think anotherquestion is, when is thisnew proposed high schoolgoing to be built? We sureare spending a lot of timediscussing it. Is this going tohappen soon, or will it be 10years down the road. And Ihope it isn’t going to benamed EdGonzales High or

Carles Beckett High. I thinkyou should name it aftersomebody who has servedMadera ... just like CarlesBeckett ... maybe not in ed-ucation. I hope it’s notgoing to be a slammed-shutcase. Once again, I’d like tosalute those four boardmembers. Everybody’s talk-ing bad about them. No-body’s saying anything badabout those other three.Maybe that’s because theyrubber-stamp everything thesuperintendent wants. Ithink our superintendentthrives on this stuff.

RUNNING WATERCONCERNS MADERAN

We’ve got some waterrunning on the corner ofSunset (Avenue) andAcornero (Street). Comeon. How long do we haveto wait for somebody tocome out and fix it? We’rein a drought.RESIDENT THINKS CITY

SHOULD WATER

The city ofMadera needsto be ashamed of them-selves. They’ve turned offthe water on the parkingstrips on the west side oftown. They’re telling thepeople we don’t care ifthings die. Property valuesare going down. What ishappening to Madera? Ter-rible.CITY SHOULD STOP THOSERIDICULOUS CAR WASHES

I’m driving down Gate-way Drive. I can’t believewith the drought situationthere’s a car wash going onin the 200 block of GatewayDrive. Whoever owns thatbusiness where the car washis being held — it’s justridiculous. The city needs tostop that from happening.THE WATER-WASTERS ARE

REPORTED BACK

I see the water wastersare back at 6th (Street) andGateway (Drive). Theywere in force today, outthere waving and scream-ing, and, of course, wastingwater. They should havebeen stopped long, longago.

DEAR ABBY: Mywife has stage 4 breastcancer. She is only 51,and our most optimisticprognosis is three to fourmore years. Our children,15 and 16, understand herdisease, but don’t reallyhave a sense of how muchlonger we all have togeth-er.

Recently we went outto dinner, and the kidsstarted talking about myretirement plans and theircollege plans. Later thatnight, my wife told mehow sad it was hearingthe kids talk about thingsshe knows she will neversee.

I have been debatingwhether I should have atalk with the kids and per-haps suggest they avoidsubjects that make theirmother sad. What do youthink? — NOT TALK-ING ABOUT THE FU-TUREDEAR NOT TALK-

ING: Before talking toyour children, I think youshould talk to your wife.Although your instinct isto protect her, I don’tthink you can. Sadness inher situation is normal.I’m sure if you were toask her if she’d prefer thekids censor their remarksin front of her, she wouldtell you she wants to heareverything she can aboutwhat they are thinking.

When people have aterminal illness, they havea right to be sad whencontemplating the thingsthey will be missing — inyour wife’s case it will beseeing her children getmarried, her grandchil-dren and more. Let yourchildren express them-selves fully with theirmother, and if she’s hav-

ing a bad/sad day, listenand let her unburden her-self. A joy shared is twicea joy, and a burden sharedis half a burden.DEAR ABBY: As a

gift, my boyfriend,“Seth,” gave me a Chi-huahua puppy. I like dogs, but have never expresseda desire to have one. Infact, I have repeatedlymentioned my dislike forsmall dogs and that Iwouldn’t have a dog dueto my travel schedule forwork. I’d have to pay forfood, veterinary care, toys, boarding, etc., andthe dog would be alone inmy apartment all daywhile I’m at the office.

Seth still chose to giveme one. When I refusedhis gift, he yelled and left. This isn’t the first timesomething like this hashappened with Seth. Formy birthday he boughtme a smartphone, signedme up for a two-year con-tract and expected me topay the monthly bill. I re-fused that, too. Am Iwrong? — SIMPLEGIRL IN SOUTHERNCALIFORNIADEAR SIMPLE

GIRL: You and Seth ap-pear to have a serious dis-connect when it comes tocommunication. Is thisthe only area of your rela-tionship in which he istone-deaf?

When our children wereyoung, taking them tothe doctor’s office was

an interesting experience. Thewaiting room was filled withtoys they could play with andchildren’s magazines I wouldread to them. So getting that farwith them was no problem. Butas soon as I picked them up tocarry them into the appointment, everything changed. Suddenlythe fun turned into fear as the

nurse approached with the needle for the needed shot. The closer she got, the tighter they hugged my neck. They would cling to me for comfort, probably hopingfor rescue, not knowing that it was for their own good.

Sometimes in this fallen world we move from timesof peace and tranquility into the painful realm of trou-ble. At that point, the question is, “How will I re-spond?” We can be fearful and wonder why God al-lowed this to happen to us, or we can trust that in themidst of this trouble He is doing something that in theend is for our best, even if it hurts. We would do wellto remember the words of the psalmist who wrote,“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You” (Ps. 56:3).

Like my children, the tougher it gets, the tighter weshould hug His neck. Trust Him. His love never fails!

Come quickly, Lord, to help me. Teach me to trustYou in times of trouble. Remind me of Your presenceand of the fact that You hold me in Your loving arms.
