THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT Do you recognize the sacrament that is celebrated in today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles? When Peter and John im-posed hands on those who had been baptized, they received the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of confirmation. The reading from the First Letter of Peter and the passage from John’s Gospel both consider the results of our baptism and confirmation. Peter reminds us it is likely that we will have to suffer for what we believe. In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks clearly about the Holy Spirit, referring to a “Paraclete,” one who will stand with us to defend us. Poignantly, Jesus promises his disciples, and all of us, “I will not leave you orphans.” He has never left his followers orphaned. We have always had the Holy Spirit to guide us. Copyright © J. S. EL PODER DEL ESPÍRITU ¿Reconoces el sacramento que se cele-bra en la primera lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles? Cuando Pedro y Juan impusieron las manos en los que habían bautizado, recibieron el Espíritu Santo en el sacramento de la Confirmación. La lectura de la primera carta de Pedro, y el pasaje del Evangelio de Juan, consideran los resultados de nuestro bautismo y confirmación. Pedro nos recuerda que lo más probable es que tengamos que sufrir por nuestras creencias. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos habla claramente sobre el Espíritu Santo, llamándolo “Defensor”, que estará junto a nosotros para defendernos. PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Almighty and Eternal God, look upon the Face of Your Christ,

and for love of Him Who is the eternal High-priest, have pity on Your priests.

Remember, O most compassionate God, that they are but weak and frail human beings.

Stir up in them the grace of their vocation which is in them by the imposition of the Bishop's hands. Keep them close to You, lest the enemy prevail

against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their

sublime vocation.

O Jesus, I pray for Your faithful and fervent priests; for Your unfaithful and tepid priests; for Your priests laboring at home or abroad

in distant mission fields; for Your tempted priests; for Your lonely and desolate priests;

for Your young priests; for Your aged priests; for Your sick priests;

for Your dying priests; for the souls of Your priests in Purgatory.

But above all I commend to You the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and

who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and

instructed or helped me and encouraged me; all the priests to whom I am indebted

in any other way, particularly Fr. Manny, Fr. Marcelino and Fr. Bernard.

O Jesus, keep them all close to Your heart, and bless them abundantly in time

This coming weekend, Memorial Day, is set aside to honor our fallen military men and women. St. Michael Academy joins St. Michael Parish in praying for the souls of our family and friends who have served our country with pride and honor. May they rest in peace.

The mission of the Academy is to form young disciples to be spiritually, intellectually, and socially prepared to integrate gospel values for living a Catholic, Christian life in a secular world. We are committed to providing a Christian environment where students experience God through exploration of their lives and the wonders of His creation. The Academy envisions itself as a partner with parents; sharing the educational ministry of the Church.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the tradition of the Church, not necessarily in your own life’s timeline, confirmation is the midpoint of Christian initiation, standing between font and table. Full initiation is completed when a confirmed person shares in the Eucharist. Centuries ago, this first sharing in the Eucharistic assembly was marked by a first sharing in the Prayer of the Faithful. This prayer raises up the needs of the church and human community, the concerns of the faithful assembled, as they prepare to lift up the world to the Father’s love. So a person could not participate in the prayer until they were anointed with the “Oil of Thanksgiving.” Next, the newly baptized presented their gifts at the altar, a sure sign of their investment a new way of life. Until the sixth century, these people normally drank a mixture of milk and honey as a kind of pre‑Communion. They were hungry, of course, since they were baptized hungry after long fasting, but this beautiful symbol of the promised land revealed them as God’s chosen, heirs to the promise. Although the “milk shake” disappeared centuries ago, we still see the vigor of this new life whenever adults are initiated at Easter, and increasingly in confirmation ceremonies that are attentive to this meaning. —Rev.
