PASTOR’S CORNER

INSTALLATION MASS Fr. Cao’s Mass of Installation as the

Pastor of Our Lady of the Mountains will take place on Sept. 24 at 4:30. Fr. Rocco

will be here to install Fr. Cao. An informal reception will follow Mass.

Welcome Parishioners and Visitors to Our Lady of the Mountains Parish this Labor

Day weekend. We are very happy that you are here to share in the Eucharist with us.

At this moment in His life, Jesus was on a journey toward Jerusalem, where He would

suffer and die. Many of the people who were following along on the road were just

there for entertainment. They wanted to see what would happen next, what amazing

thing Jesus might say, what miracle He might perform. Jesus was trying to show them

that following Him was more than a casual pass-time. They needed to know that true

followers would have to pay a price for their discipleship.

The people on the road to Jerusalem needed to understand that true faith is a

relationship with God, and good relationships always demand that we struggle. Jesus

Himself had to struggle with the people He loved best, people like Peter, who wanted

Him to stay safe and avoid the cross. Jesus couldn't just 'go along' with Peter to keep

things peaceful. He couldn't let his attachment to Peter blur his vision. He had to

confront their differences and resolve them.

All good relationships are built on a foundation of truth and honesty. If we are honest,

then sometimes there will be conflicts. Good relationships can go through conflicts

and resolve them, and come out stronger in the end. God continued to love the people

of Israel after all their wanderings. Jesus continued to love Peter after all his

blundering mistakes. And we can continue to love each other, not by sweeping truth

under the rug but by looking at each other with eyes wide open and seeing what is

truly reflected there. This is how God sees each one of us. If God can love us as we

truly are, then surely, in spite of all our honest conflicts, we can love one another.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus invites us to take up our cross and follow Him daily. May we

bear pain with courage and meet challenges with hope. Do you have what it takes to

be Jesus’ disciples? With God’s help, everything is possible.

Have a blessed week.

Fr. Joseph Thai Cao
