“If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a family.” – African Proverb

Across the globe, two-thirds of the world’s 785 million illiterate adults are female. Educating and empowering women and girls is a key first step to ending local and global poverty. When women are educated they lift up their entire communities. For example, educated women improve family health, and develop sustainable businesses that bring their families out of poverty. Educated women are poised and empowered to make greater contributions to their communities and the world at large.

WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER.

At Rodan + Fields® (R+F) and buildOn we believe that all people have the right to be educated, improve their own lives and contribute to society—no matter their gender or where in the world they live. From corporate boardrooms to under-resourced U.S. communities to the rural villages of the developing world, women have the ability to lead and make unique contributions to their communities. By standing in solidarity with the women leaders everywhere, we can make significant contributions toward ending poverty.

This March, in honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we invite you to stand with women and girls across the globe by serving with the Rodan + Fields Prescription for Change® Foundation and buildOn.

Promote Education to Women & Girls Locally and Globally

At a Rodan + Fields event this March, host a screening and discussion of Girls Rising, a film that uses storytelling to inspire action that gets girls into classrooms, then lead a discussion on how PFC and buildOn are addressing the issues raised in the film. End your event by writing inspiring messages that promote education for women and girls across the globe—and in your own backyard.

This toolkit contains instructions for completing this project. You can download the resources listed throughout the toolkit at buildon.org/pfc_strongertogether_toolkit.

STEP 1: PLAN YOUR “STRONGER TOGETHER” EVENTDeadline: Send your “Stronger Together” Event Date to Tanya Macedo and [email protected] by March 8, 2016.

Choose an existing R+F Event in the Month of March, or organize a new one, to host your film screening and service project. You will need approximately 4 hours for the full project.

Let your guests know about the details of the project in advance by using the shareable social media graphics.

Provided Resources: “Stronger Together” Sharable Images

STEP 2: EXPLORE THE ISSUES SURROUNDING GENDER AND EDUCATION

At your event, introduce the film Girl Rising by using the Film Screening Talking Points provided. Then, watch the film Girl Rising as a group. You will need to rent the film before your event—it is available on Amazon, Apple, or YouTube, among other outlets.

After watching the film, use the “Stronger Together” Presentation to relate the issues conveyed in the film to the work that PFC and buildOn are doing to address issues of gender disparity and education.

Finally, use the “Stronger Together” Discussion Questions to hold a conversation about the film, the issues, and our role in addressing them.

Provided Resources: Film Screening Talking Points, “Stronger Together” Presentation & Discussion Questions.

STEP 3: CREATE MESSAGES OF EMPOWERMENT FOR WOMEN & GIRLS

Your voice can help motivate a woman or girl to start attending or stay in school. Use the prompts provided to write a personal message to a female student in the U.S. like Timberly, or to a woman in Malawi like Felecia, or to a girl in Haiti like Wadley.

These messages will be personally delivered to women and girls across the globe by buildOn staff. Your message of hope and motivation could be the thing that helps them complete their education.

Provided Resources: Service Activity Prompts.

STEP 4: SHARE TO RAISE AWARENESS

Let’s celebrate together! After your event, post photos to social media of all of the messages you’ve written, and help raise awareness of the issues using the shareable statistics and quotes provided using #IWD2016 #RodanFields.

Provided Resources: “Stronger Together” Shareable Images.
