MEANING OF SERVICE TAX RETURNWhat is a Service Tax ReturnService tax is that type of indirect tax which is levied on the services provided by a service provider in India. Service tax is an indirect tax that the service provider pays the tax and recovers the same from the service recipient of the taxable services.Service Tax Registration is compulsory for all service providers with a turnover of over Rs. 9 Lakh (as defined under the Act). Failure to apply would result in penalties of Rs. 5,000 or Rs. 200 a day, for every day, during which such failure continues, whichever is higher could be imposed as penalty.You need to file returns twice a year, regardless of whether your turnover exceeds Rs. 10 Lakh, if you have a Service Tax Registration. You still need to file your returns by October 25th (for April to September) and by April 25 (for October to March), even if you dont have any revenues. All your Service tax dues need to be cleared before this filing. Penalties would be levied if any failure to pay service tax or file service tax returns by the due date.
