OPENING PRAYER

Holy God, draw us close in our time of worship this morning.

Help us to serve you today and every day with songs of gratitude, words of witness, prayers of compassion, deeds of justice, and acts of kindness.

Holy God, draw us close this morning...and fill us with Your Spirit.

This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BAPTISMAL COVENANT I (10:55) Revs. Bob Bauman and Diane Amidon UMH 33

Today, we welcome all our new members and celebrate the baptism of: William Ross Rayner, William Ross Rayner, Jr., and Jay Harris Rayner

THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER (10:55) UMH 41

LEADER: The Lord be with you.PEOPLE: And also with you.LEADER: Let us pray. Eternal Father, when nothing existed but chaos, you swept across the dark waters and brought forth light. In the days of Noah, you saved those on the ark through water. After the flood, you set in the clouds a rainbow. When you saw your people as slaves in Egypt, you led them to freedom through the sea. Their children you brought through the Jordan to the land which you promised.PEOPLE: Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Tell of God’s mercy each day.

10

LEADER: In the fullness of time you sent Jesus, nurtured in the water of a womb. He was baptized by John and anointed by your spirit. He called his disciples to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection and to make disciples of all nations.PEOPLE: Declare his works to the nations, his glory among all the people.LEADER: Pour out your Holy Spirit, to bless this gift of water and those who receive it, to wash away their sin and clothe them in righteousness throughout their lives, that, dying and being raised with Christ, they may share in His final victory.PEOPLE: All praise to you, Eternal Father, through your Son Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns forever. Amen.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. PASTOR’S NOTES

I Quit Hurrying

Do you know who Michael Kahn is? I didn’t but I should have, especially as someone who loves film and television as much as I do. In this award season, he’s someone whose name we should all know, having been nominated now for more Academy awards than any other person in his profession. Michael Kahn is perhaps the most famous editor in Hollywood, working on nearly every Steven Spielberg movie, including greats like Lincoln, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The reason we don’t know his name is because we undervalue his craft. When it comes time for the award for editing, we all get up and grab another snack.

During the month of January, we have been re-claiming the art and the significance of a good edit across all of our Edenton Street tables as we consider what things we might all remove from our lives together in our current sermon series “I Quit.” John Maxwell says that “you cannot overestimate the unimportance of nearly everything” and this is what a good editor knows. Only a few things are ultimately important in this life and if we don’t continually edit our lives well, we’ll lose track of those precious few things. Life will get crowded out by the noise of everything else that seems so important and we’ll miss the moments and people that matter most.

This year I’ve decided that I’m going to quit hurrying - that God hasn’t called me to live a life that leads to burn out. So, I’ve been slowing down lately and it’s forcing me to become a better editor of my life and to honor the things that matter most, which of course are never things but always people. I hope you’ll join me in quitting some things that we might all see the world and each other better.

Grace and peace,Rev. Justin Morgan

DOORSTEP MINISTRY

Happy New Year from your Doorstep Ministry (DSM)! Each year, we start with the hope that this year will be even better than the last, and that we and those we love will be healthy, happy, and safe. There are many in our own community who have little but that hope on which to cling. These are the ones ESUMC’s Doorstep Ministry serves. Scripture teaches us in Proverbs 19:17 that “..whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord.”

This means that when we see someone in need, we should respond as we believe Christ would have us respond. Your church has chosen to respond to our frequent requests for financial aid through the structure of the Doorstep Ministry. This program for our neighbors in financial need is starting off well this year, thanks to our wonderful, generous congregation. Over the course of Advent, your offerings for DSM totaled over $62,000.00!! This puts us in a wonderful position to help many more folks this year. In 2016, the DSM was able to help 407 families/individuals to stay safely in their homes, either through rental assistance or help with a utility bill. We hope to surpass that number in 2017!

What happens to the money that is given to the Doorstep Ministry? It goes into a fund which is used solely for the purpose of supplying financial aid to those who need help with rent, power, water, or household gas. After a 30-minute interview with one of our wonderful volunteers, the client leaves with either a pledge letter or a promissory note. Funds are sent directly to landlords or utility companies. The DSM also offers food and diaper referrals, referrals to other agencies/churches, prayer, winter outerwear, and hygiene items. The outerwear and hygiene items are all donated. I believe that the best thing offered by the Doorstep Ministry is the love of Christ, conveyed through the radical hospitality of treating all our guests with dignity, regardless of their life circumstances or appearance. Many, many thanks for helping us share Christ through this ministry, and please remember us in your continued giving!
