Worship begins when the first person arrives. Please worship

silently through the prelude.

Bold text is read or sung by the congregation.

*Please stand if able.

Idlewild welcomes children and encourages them to participate

in our entire worship service. Pick up a children’s worship pack at the sanctuary door.

In the film "The Mission" Jesuit Father Gabriel walks up to a waterfall and plays his oboe,

intending to befriend the natives with his music so he can carry on his missionary work in

the New World. "Gabriel's Oboe" is arranged with organ accompaniment by Tennessee

organist, Wilma Jensen.

“God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand” was generated

by 19th century centennial celebrations: the words by the

Declaration of Independence and the music by the adoption

of the United States Constitution. Despite these

origins, no specific nation is mentioned in this hymn of

praise and prayer for peace.

*CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 30) Sing praise to God, O faithful ones.

Give thanks to God’s holy name.

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of the prophets, we confess that we have failed to heed your word.

You led our forebears to this land, and, out of conflict,

created in us a vision of peace and liberty.

We give you thanks.

Yet we have failed you by neglecting rights and restricting freedoms.

Forgive pride that overlooks national wrong or justifies injustice.

Forgive divisions caused by prejudice or greed.

Have mercy, God, on the heart of this land.

Make us compassionate, faithful, and helpful to each other.

Raise up in us a right patriotism, that sees and seeks

this Nation’s good, and the good of the world.

(period of silent prayer and meditation)

Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (All sing once in unison, then repeat with the west side beginning and the east side

joining in canon. Follow direction from the choir.)

*PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you.

And also with you!

In the presence of a holy God, we become aware of the ways

we fall short of God’s best hopes for us, and the ways we

have hurt others. We turn to God in prayer, asking

forgiveness.

We express gratitude that through God’s grace and

Christ’s giving of himself on the cross we are forgiven and

restored to God and one another.

We sing in thanksgiving for the gift of forgiveness and new life.

The Passing of the Peace is one of the most ancient

responses in worship. Having received Christ’s peace,

we pass it on.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

SERMON PATRIOTISM, PRESBYTERIAN STYLE DR. MONTGOMERY

We invite young children to come to the front at this time.

Each week children bring quarters to put in education

sticks, so that young girls around the world might have

the opportunity for an education. Just $275 (1,100

quarters) provides scholarship, supplies, and empowerment for

a young girl. As our children come forward for the Children’s

Time, please pass them quarters to share.

The children lead the congregation in The Lord’s

Prayer (using “Forgive us our debts as we forgive

our debtors”).

Following the Children’s Time, three-year-olds through senior

kindergartners may go to C3. Parents, please take your

children out to the hallway, by the T.K. Young Room, and sign

them in. Helpers will escort them to Room 203W in the Jones Building. If you have

babies, toddlers or two-year-olds, you will take them to the

nursery area (2nd floor east, Jones Building).

The first two stanzas of “This Is My Song” were written

between the 20th century’s two world wars and focus on the

theme of international peace. The third stanza, by another author and added later, uses

the language of the Lord’s Prayer to voice a distinctly

Christian perspective.

The sermon is a reflection on the day’s scriptures, suggesting

implications for our faith and life.

.

The presentation of offerings in the Presbyterian tradition is

seen as an act of grateful response to God. The Offertory, usually a vocal or instrumental

musical offering, gives the congregation a setting in which

to reflect on their gratitude to God.

Doxology literally means “words of glory.” Doxologies have long been used by Jews and Christians to praise God.

Here we honor and thank God “from whom all blessings flow.”

RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE

“TAKE, O TAKE ME AS I AM”

PRESENTATION OF GIFTS, TITHES, AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY “WHO AT MY DOOR IS STANDING?” ENGLISH FOLK SONG, ARR. K. LEE SCOTT (B. 1950)

Who at my door is standing, there patiently drawing near, Who entrance is demanding? Whose is the voice I hear? Sweetly the tones are falling: “Now open the door for me! If thou wilt heed my calling, I will abide with thee.”

Within, the rooms are darken’d, all filled with dust and sin; How shameful, how unworthy for Christ to enter in. Yet, the tones are falling: “Now open the door for me! If thou will heed my calling, I will abide with thee.”

Door of my heart, I hasten! Thee will I open wide, Though he rebuke and chasten, He shall with me abide. Sweetly the tones are falling; “Now open the door for me!” Lord God, I hear thee calling, Come now, abide with me. –Mary Slade, 1975

Donia Rachelle Wade and David Schnell, soloists

*DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise Christ, all creatures here below.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise Holy Spirit evermore;

Praise Triune God whom we adore.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION MS. BURNETT

The invitation to the Lord’s Supper is extended to all who

desire to follow Christ, remembering that access to the communion table is not a right

conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the

undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love. Even one who has doubts or whose trust

is wavering is invited to the table in order to be assured of

God’s love and grace in Christ Jesus.

Today we celebrate communion by intinction, which means that we will each come to a station

to receive the bread and cup. In a world scarred by scarcity, we

come, take a sizable piece of bread, and dip it in the cup to proclaim through our actions that God’s grace is abundant,

for in the kingdom of God, there is enough for all

to be filled.

When offered the bread and cup, we can receive the gifts of

Christ and respond with thanksgiving, saying, “Thanks

be to God” or “Amen.”

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION MS. BURNETT DR. MONTGOMERY

WORDS OF INVITATION GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Holy God, we praise you. Let the heavens be joyful and the earth be glad.

We bless you for creating the whole world, for hearing the cries of your people and leading them from slavery, for your promises to your people Israel, and for Jesus Christ in whom your fullness dwells.

For his life which informs our living,

for his compassion which changes our hearts,

for his clear speaking which contradicts our harmless generalities,

for his disturbing presence, his innocent suffering, his fearless dying, his rising to life-breathing forgiveness,

We praise and worship him,

and we give you thanks!

For he has risen!

He has risen, indeed! In rising from the dead, he offers compassion, peace, hope, and new life. From your right hand, O God, Christ prays for us, and your Spirit intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words.

Setting our wisdom, our will, our words aside,

emptying our hearts,

and bringing nothing in our hands,

we yearn for the healing,

the holding,

the accepting,

the forgiving,

which Christ alone offers, that we may serve as your faithful disciples until we feast at your table in glory.

Merciful God, send now your spirit to settle on this bread and cup and fill them with the fullness of Christ. And let that same spirit rest on us, converting us from the patterns of this passing world, until we conform to the shape of him whose table we now share. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTICES

The Sanctuary flowers are given today to the glory of God and in memory of Dr. Roy C. Page, by Nancy Page and Roy Page II.

Communion today is by intinction, which means that each person will come forward, take a piece of the bread, and dip it into the cup to share in the Lord’s Supper. Coming to the table symbolizes an active response to the gift given in Jesus Christ, and the taking of a sizable piece of the bread is a reminder that the love of God is abundant. Ushers will guide each row toward the outer aisles to a communion station, then back to the pew by the center aisle. Those in the balcony will be directed down the steps to the front door in the narthex. A gluten-free station will be in front of the communion table.

Camera and video use is not allowed during the worship service. Please turn off your cell phone.

Members and guests, please indicate your presence on the Friendship Roster this morning.

The 11:00 service is live at new.livestream.com/idlewild, or search for “Idlewild” in the Livestream phone or Roku app. You can also listen on WREC-AM 600 or at www.600wrec.com, or use the iHeartRadio app.

Music is printed under Onelicense.net A-702280.

his hymn text (inspired by the vista from Pike’s Peak and by a

visit to Chicago’s Columbian World Exposition) and tune

(named MATERNA because it was composed for “O Mother,

Dear Jerusalem”) were joined in 1912. The combination proved

immensely popular during World War I and afterwards.

Bach's "Little Organ Book" contains short compositions

based on hymns drawn from the liturgical year. This piece is

based upon a hymn for Pentecost. The melody sings in

the soprano while the inner voices symbolize scattered

tongues of fire and the bass part plays only on beat three of the triple meter symbolizing the

third Person of the Trinity.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP MUSIC DURING COMMUNION

“WRITE YOUR BLESSED NAME” FOLK SONG, ARR. K. LEE SCOTT (B. 1950)

Write Your blessed name, O Lord, upon my heart, there to remain so indelibly engraved that no prosperity, that no adversity shall ever ever move me from Your love.

Be to me a strong tower of defense, a comforter in tribulation, a deliverer in distress, and a faithful guide to the courts of heaven through the many temptations and dangers of this life. O Jesu, my only Savior! –Thomas à Kempis (1380 – 1471)

Binghampton Christian Academy (BCA) is one of our 2016 grant recipients. BCA is a private pre-K through eighth grade Christian school serving the Binghampton community. It has both day and residential programs. The majority of students come from households below the poverty line; about 60% are children of African refugees. All students are on full scholarship, which includes meals and after-school enrichment programs. The school also raises funds for students to attend summer camp. Among the goals is to promote academic success, increase college enrollment, and break the cycle of poverty. Community support funds are used for teacher salaries (BCA receives no government funding). For additional information or to volunteer, visit bcamemphis.org and click Get Involved.

Please join us in praying the Prayers of the People in a special way. Each Thursday, More Than A Meal (MTAM) guests write prayers to be prayed aloud. Many of these prayers are posted on the bulletin board on the first floor ramp. You are invited to take one and commit to that prayer each day for a week. New ones are posted each week, so please check often and pray alongside our MTAM friends.

BAPTISMAL BUDDIES

A new ministry called Baptismal Buddies is taking shape. As details come together, the leadership teams needs your prayers for creative imagination, focused energy and discernment, as well as shared wisdom and reflections about parenting. The vision is to provide a tangible witness to the baptismal vows we take as a congregation, through the development of a relationship with each individual baptized by praying, encouraging, and equipping a life of faith. Our goal is to create lasting and faithful relationships between baptismal families and congregants who commit to serve as Baptismal Buddies.

Do you have a poem or prayer, words of wisdom, book recommendation, an image or songs you might suggest to a new parent — something about parenting and what it means to raise children in the love and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ? A book is being compiled especially for our church family of faith. If you would like to share something, please submit your contributions by Sunday, July 17. You can email [email protected] or leave a copy, marked for Anne H.K. Apple, at the church office. Thank you for helping us to live into our baptismal calling as faithful evangelists!
