CATECHETICAL SUNDAY 2017The third Sunday of September in theUnited States is celebrated as CatecheticalSunday in order to acknowledge, appreciate, and commission those who arecatechists. The first celebration of national

catechetical day in our country is recorded on October 30,1935, in Rochester, N.Y. By 1944, the practice was in everypart of the nation and by 1955 most dioceses celebrated theday on the third Sunday in September. This year’s theme is“Living as Missionary Disciples” and at our 11AM Mass, thosefrom our parish family who will serve as catechists will becalled forth to be commissioned for their ministry. CatecheticalSunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role thateach of us play, by virtue of our Baptism, in handing on thefaith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday isan opportunity for ALL to rededicate themselves to this missionas a community of faith.

FAITH AT HOMEIn this Sunday's Gospel, we encounter one ofJesus' most eye-opening, soul-searching, life-changing parables. Today's parable is aboutforgiveness, and it touches the very core ofour human hypocrisy: We want others to be

generous in treating us with mercy, but we tend to bequite stingy in doling out mercy to others. We want othersto be lenient with us, but meanwhile we make harshdeterminations about what we think they deserve. "Howoften must I forgive?" Jesus' well known response was,"Seventy seven times" (sometimes translated as "seventytimes seven"). Of course we know Jesus did not mean thisliterally, as though we could stop forgiving on theseventy-eighth offense! In Scripture the number sevensymbolizes completeness or wholeness. The "wholeness"of forgiveness reaches far and wide. It goes beyond whatany human being may even feel capable ofaccomplishing. It is essentially limitless. This masterfulparable is impeccable in its logic. It leaves the hearerwith no possible conclusion except to say, "I must forgivemy brother and sister from my heart." The alternative is alife without mercy, which is no life at all. Adults: When andwith whom have I been stingy with mercy, doling it out insmall sums? When have I failed to recognize, accept, and appreciate the limitless mercy God has offered me?Children: Who represents God in the parable, and whatdoes God want? Which character in the story representseach of us, and what do we do wrong? What is theconclusion Jesus drew at the end of the parable? FamilyPerspective: Search your soul. Who do you need toforgive? Forgiveness is a process. Begin that process thisweek, remembering how generous God is with you, andhow he has empowered you and called you to begenerous with others.

HOLY HEALTH NEWSHow To Get A Better Night's Sleep—Whenyou curl up under the covers at night, youprobably settle into your favorite positionwithout thinking much about it. But could onesleep position be better than another? Forpeople with neck pain, sleeping face up can

sometimes make the pain worse. But many people find backsleep is helpful for alleviating low-back pain. Experiment withdifferent positions. Snoring and sleep apnea-- Obstructivesleep apnea causes the airways to collapse during sleep, leading to pauses in breathing. It often goes hand-in-hand withsnoring. Positioning yourself on your side or stomach can helpthe airways stay open. Reflux and heartburn-- If you suffer fromheartburn or reflux (GERD) sleep on your left side to cool theburn. Other tips-- Close the blinds, replace old mattresses andpillows. Choose a supportive pillow to cradle the neck. Turn offthe phone. Research shows that late night use of phones andtablets can interfere with sleep. Don't respond to textmessages after you have turned in for the night since it hasbeen shown to result in poor quality of sleep and sometimessymptoms of anxiety and depression. When retiring for thenight, silence your phone or leave it in another room. Parents, make sure your kids aren't sneaking the phone into bed withthem. Quality of sleep is important for teenagers, especially.Sweet Dreams from the OLM Health Ministry.

From Fr. Roberto:

Dear Friends,

As I mentioned last weekend Richard Larkin and his wife Linda received the award “Vivere Christus”from Bishop Serratelli and I made my trip to the Cathedral on Sunday to congratulate them. It was veryhard to get there because a significant number of streets in Paterson were closed but I finally got intothe Cathedral. It was packed. Finding them among so many people was a mission. However, “nothing isimpossible with God”; I found them, gave them a hug and congratulated them on behalf of all of you atOur Lady of Mercy. Thank you Richard and Linda once again for your service to our parish.

By the way, speaking about Richard Larkin…our Calendar Raffle begins on Sunday Oct 1. This is agreat opportunity to help our community and have fun at the same time. There are very few possibilitiesof winning the lottery. Even though, people are hopeful. Millions of people play it very often, “just incase”. Our Calendar Raffle is much easier; give it a try! You may not win the prize; however, you willalways have the opportunity to contribute to our community in a very playful way.

Last week Ed Peterson spoke at all of our Masses about the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The name of thisprogram makes it look like it’s the Bishop’s own thing. Far from being a private initiative of the Bishop, itis a project of the whole Diocese of Paterson. Many people benefit by the Annual Appeal. Thank youonce again for being so generous to the program and thank you Ed for presenting it to us beautifully.

This weekend our Religious Education Program begins. Our children from PreK-8th will gather thisSunday from 9:30 - 10:45. Our Confirmation Program, which is for teens in 9th & 10th grade, will beginnext Sunday 9/24 at the same time. Both days we will gather in the Parish Center with our catechistsand a parent for orientation. We will conclude at the 11AM Mass. It will be wonderful to see manychildren together. They are always the hope of the Church and of the world. May they find in our parisha place where they feel loved and integrated. They have the opportunity also to serve the community asAltar Servers. This is a very important ministry in which they can offer their talents and time to God andothers. We will love to see more children around the Altar.

Finally, last Tuesday night I attended a meeting at Seton Hall University where Immaculate ConceptionSeminary is located. Dailon Lisabet and Charles Lana are residing there. Both of them are seminariansfrom our Diocese. They are currently in 3rd year of Theology, which is the 7th year at the Seminary. Afew weeks ago I was asked about hosting them in our parish for some pastoral experience. They willcome to participate with us sometimes for liturgies, meetings, visiting the sick and even participating atsome of our Staff Meetings. Thank God they will live in the Seminary! However, there is more for me todo…I will be involved in their formation. My first lesson will be telling them to apply to me what Jesussaid about the Pharisees in the Gospel: “you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do notdo what they do” Mt 23:3. I hope to be a good example for them. It is always a privilege having theopportunity to serve them and the Church mentoring them in their vocation journey.

God Bless you all,

Fr. Roberto
