Greetings Lions and Lioness of Incredible District I,Congratulations and Christmas wishes are almost the entire order of the day. The Congratulations, well deserved and sincerely sent, go especially to the Nanaimo Lions
Club; the only winner in District I of the Club Excellence Award. Well done Nanaimo Lions. They also go to all the Clubs in the Courtenay/Comox area, who put in terrific efforts and time to support the Kids Telethon, broadcast from the Sid Williams Theatre on Nov.6. A very special shout-out here goes to the Baynes Sound Lions, with their Pennies Push for kids. This entails having a large wheelbarrow, which is pushed from Fanny Bay to Courtenay, collecting sponsorships before-hand and cash along the way. On their arrival at the venue, they presented a cheque for $11,000 and change, to the Telethon. That is outstanding! And they also go to West Shore and Esquimalt Lions for a job well done at the Victoria night-time Santa truck parade. Mention of the Club names on the front page of the Times Colonist is always good.
During my November visits I have been very pleased to present Banner patches to many Clubs, recognising the number and degree of major service activities they completed during the 2015-16 Lions Year. Several more of these will be going out to Clubs via Zone Chairs, and/or Ist VDG Joyce, or 2nd VDG Mike. There will be patches for activities around the Centennial themes, (Legacy projects are included here also), throughout the 2017-18 Lions Year, and it will fall to next year’s DG, Joyce Boyle, to present these.
I have also been privileged to present many long-service chevrons to members in a variety of Clubs. Very special among these were a 55-year chevron to a West Shore Lion, (what a record) and a 2-part award, of a 35-year chevron, and a Melvin Jones Fellowship to a well-loved, much respected and very industrious member of the Central Saanich club, Lion Lorne Melvin, (I kid you not!) Jones. There are many more chevrons to be presented, and each and every one of them represents and exemplifies the consistently high and dedicated level of service that all of you give to your communities.
The month of March will see, hopefully, all Clubs participating in the Spring Ahead Membership Drive. This is intended to be a blitz effort to raise the numbers in the whole of our multiple, MD19. Two useful contacts are MD19 PR Chair, PDG Kathy Crawford at [email protected], and the excellent MD19 Membership Manual, which can be found at http://www.lions19.com/manuals/. As soon as your Club decides to take part, please have your President, or Membership Chair contact Kathy. She will be compiling a list of all participants. Planning for your event should start now, and then go into high gear from January 1 onwards.
And then, in April comes the District I Spring Conference, in Sidney-by-the-Sea. Much more on this event next, and in all subsequent months. Suffice to say my thanks go to the Core Conference team for the huge amount of work they have already done.
As the dank, dreary and damp days draw us all closer to the Winter Solstice, and, of course, Christmas, my very warmest wishes for a safe, happy and restful(!) holiday season. These go to the entire District team, especially to my fabulous bulletin editor, Sheila, and to every Lion and Lioness, whose work and dedication will be a big part of making Christmas brighter and more bountiful for so many people in your communities. They may not always be in a position to thank you for all your tireless efforts, so, on their behalf, I will do just that.
Give yourselves a break and a huge pat on the back. You have all earned it. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR.

More Members Means More Service
Dear Lions, We surpassed the 1.4 million member mark at the end of October thanks to Lions like you. It's a great accomplishment, and I want to thank you for working to make your Club and your community stronger. Reaching the 1.4 million mark early in the year puts us on a path to continue membership growth into 2017 and beyond. It also puts us in position to be the largest we've ever been, allowing us to serve more people than ever before. The goal of our new strategic plan, LCI Forward, is to triple our service impact by serving 200 million people a year by 2021. More members means we can provide more service to those who need us most. Each member serves 70 people on average, so imagine how many more people we can help by inviting others to join us in service, and by keeping our current members as Lions. To keep this momentum going and to help reach our service goals, I am asking every member to think about someone they know who shares our desire to help people and then ask them to join us in service. Thank you again for helping us grow so we can serve even more people. Let's keep climbing new mountains together! Very truly yours, Chancellor Bob Corlew Your International President
ARE YOU MOVING?Lions,Are you due to move? Are you then having to leave your beloved Lion’s Club that you have been enjoying?Don’t fret, I can re-connect you with your NEW Lions Club in or near to your new home. Just contact me and let me make magic happen for you.

CLUB SERVICE ACTIVITY REPORT
By Lion Leslie Smith
The Service Activity Report provides an important means to measure the worldwide impact of Lions and Leos humanitarian service. The global tabulation of individual Club reports identifies service trends that influence the development of association programs, including service activity planning resources.
The Service Activity Report application also provides Clubs with a variety of tools to monitor their service and share information with others. Clubs are able to:
• Provide a narrative description for each activity
• Upload photos
• Search for activities using key words and various search criteria.
• Designate re-occurring signature activities.
• Share service activity information with other Clubs
• Set service objectives and track progress toward achieving them.
At the District level, Lions leaders can use the report applica-tion to generate custom reports on service activities within their District, monitor Club participation in the Centennial Service Challenge and/or specific areas of service, designate signature activities, set District-wide service goals and objectives and track progress toward achieving them.
District Leaders should encourage Club Secretaries to submit Lions Club Service Activity Reports via MyLCI on a monthly
basis. However, when no service activities are performed for a given month, it is not necessary to record any service activity information for that month. Club Secretar-ies have until July 15 each year to report activities for the fiscal year.
PLEASE NOTE: Service Activity Reports can only be submitted online (MyLCI site).
Paper report forms are no longer being accepted. For more information, contact [email protected]
The Baynes Sound Lions Annual Wheelbarrow Push was a great success again this year.
We managed to raise $11,443.16, which is 10% of the total.

Your AM/FM ReportA Moment For Membership #2
By Lion Burnie Smith19 I District Membership and Retention Chair
Expectations and perceptions! WOW! I know from my own Club’s experience that if a member’s
expectations of being a Lion are not met, their membership is soon gone.
An additional problem is the member’s perception of how they are perceived in the Club.
Unfortunately, the perception of the new Lion is often quite different from that of the Lion membership at large. A simple misunderstanding can quickly evolve into a confrontation leading to a member leaving with the feeling that his expectations were not met.
There is no simple answer, as often the new member’s reasons for leaving do not jive with the facts as perceived by the general membership. I would suggest that an ACTIVE mentor is the best defense against misplaced expectations and perceptions of new AND TRANSFERED members.

WHAT IS IT?The Spring Ahead Membership Drive is a 2017 project that will ask each Lions Club in MD19 to
hold a Membership Event during the week prior to the start of Daylight Savings Time (Sunday, March 12, 2017).
WHY SHOULD MY CLUB PARTICIPATE?Almost all Lions Clubs will benefit from new members. More members equal more service. New members bring new energy, new talents, and new ideas. Also, participating Clubs have the opportunity to win some great prizes. We will send more prize information in the coming months.
SO WHAT DO WE DO NEXT?• Plan a membership event for any day during March 5–11, 2017. You can plan an open house, contact potential members at a community event, or walk your local businesses with membership applications.• Send an email to MD19 Public Relations Chairperson Kathy Crawford at [email protected] to let us know that you are going to participate. We will share the names of Clubs that plan to participate.
The MD19 Membership Manual includes a complete Open House manual. This is a proven method for holding an open house. We encourage you to follow the manual and avoid taking shortcuts. Here’s a link to the manual:http://www.lionsmd19.com/manuals/2016%20Membership%20and%20Open%20House%20manual.pdfThe link here takes you to a LCI website page where you will find a lot of ideas and resources for gaining new members: http://members.lionsclubs.org/EN/lions/invite-members/index.php

GABRIOLA Lions Club
Christmas Ferry Lineup Fundraiser
Submitted by Secretary Carol MartinWritten by Anne Banford
Every year, about two weeks before Christmas, Gabriola Lions don their Santa hats and mittens and walk the ferry lineup, seeking donations for Christmas baskets.
The Lions supply food vouchers from Village Foods, our community sponsor extraordinaire, which are distributed by People for a Healthy Community, our social service agency extraordinaire, to those in need.
Gabriolans and visitors have the opportunity to donate to this annual Christmas program, to enrich the holiday season for the needy. Lions Anne Banford’s our coordinator scheduling 12+ Lions on three shifts a day over the FOUR day, December 14 – 17 period. Some do double shifts, and as you can imagine it is very sociable. Most travelers using the ferry are islanders who we know, and consistently give and give again to Lions projects.
Gabriolans are wonderfully supportive of this initiative, which raises more than $4,000 over the four days.
Gabriola Island is one of the southerly of the Gulf Islands off the west coast of British Columbia.
Our nearest city is Nanaimo and the ferry ride there of about 20 minutes is our car and truck route to Vancouver Island and beyond.

SOOKE DISTRICT Lioness Club
Serving the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 54, Sooke Diamond Jubilee Housing
By Lioness Anne Scott
Santa just couldn’t wait until Christmas, so, it was the pleasure of President Ellen, Treasurer Heather and Lioness Anne, to deliver dual control clock radios to each of
the ten residents. The request was made and filled and now during a power failure they will all “have access “ to the outside world!
Special thanks to Lioness Diane who was our ‘super shopper’! Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!!

The Victoria Chinatown Lioness members had great fun and camaraderie crafting all the handmade decoration for this year’s tree for the
Children’s Hospital Foundation Festival of Trees. Lioness Annette, Amanda, Vanessa Nelles and Brenda decorated this year’s tree at the Bay Centre on November 16.
Please visit the Festival of Trees at the Bay Centre in Victoria and vote for VCL, tree # 22, celebrating Chinese folk art and the year of the Rooster 2017!

Timmy’s Christmas Telethon is coming
Dear Lions & Lioness,Yes it is that time of year again when we get to celebrate all of
the great work that the Lions Clubs and Lioness Clubs have done over the past year.
On Sunday, December 4th Timmy’s Christmas Telethon will once again air on Shaw TV from 6:00pm to 10:00pm and if you don’t have Shaw TV you can watch it on your computer at no cost to you. Just go to www.timmys.org.
Again, this past year our service delivery increased for both the Lions’ Easter Seals Camps and the Lions’ Easter Seals House.
We provided camping services to almost 800 children with disabilities - both physical & cognitive/mental. A bright light in our camping program was the growth we are seeing in the young adult (19-29) program at all three camps.
Our camping program is an exceptional program and costs for camping continues to rise due to the high need for skilled and trained staff to continue our personalized 1:3 ratio, custom-ized food programs, customized recreational programs and the increasing costs of inflation and the increases in wages, insurance, food, etc. Your donations make a big difference in helping us provide this service as the cost per child is approximately $2,400 and a small part of this is covered by the family and in some cases families cannot afford even the minimal fee and request a finan-cial subsidy from us. Last year 98% of the requests we received either got a a full or partial subsidy from the Society, thereby fulfilling our mandate that ‘nobody gets left behind’.
Our Easter Seals House continues to run at 100% occupancy on the weekdays resulting in approximately 30,000 bednights per year being filled. We are still maintaining a cost of a parent to $20 per night and a child with a medical condition stays for free.
Every day there are new charities being created and every char-ity represents a great cause. However all of the charities are trying their hand at running special events and asking for donations and that has diluted donors dollars to everyone. The support of the Li-ons and Lioness Clubs is still vitally important and is still needed to continue providing the Easter Seals House and the Easter Seals Camps to children with disabilities and their families.
Please help support Easter Seals Camps and Easter Seals House by donating to Timmy’s Christmas Telethon by sending in your donation today to: Timmy’s Christmas Telethon at3981 Oak St, Vancouver, BC V6H 4H5
Lions donations will be recognized on the scroll during the Telethon.

NANAIMO Lions Club
By Lion Larrie Taylor, President
The Nanaimo Lions are partnering with the Vancouver Island Regional Library [VIRL] and the Nanaimo Clippers junior hockey team in a new project “Score with Reading”.
This project was initiated by Jason Kuffler of the VIRL who saw an oppor-tunity to promote literacy by teaming these young hockey players with school students who may have learning chal-lenges and may suffer from bullying.
For those who don’t follow hockey, the BC Hockey League [BCHL], in which the Clippers play, provides young hockey players an opportunity to develop their hockey skills and at the same time qualify for academic scholarships if they maintain good academic grades.
Many of these young players continue with their education when they graduate from the BCHL at universities throughout North America. In this program, the 28 schools in Nanaimo have been asked to select two students each to participate in the pro-gram in which the hockey players are the mentors.
The Nanaimo Lions are financially supporting the project and are providing an opportunity for the students to skate with the Clippers at the January 22 Lions Free Skate [a project we operate every Sunday from mid-September to the end of March].
44th Annual ALBERNI VALLEY LIONS
TV AUCTIONBy Lion Ron Metcalfe
This 44th TV Auction was held on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016 at the Port Alberni Youth Centre. Beginning in late September, each member of the Club canvassed local businesses
that contributed one or more articles to be sold at the auction. Members
were also responsible for collection and delivery of the donated items and completed that task near the end of October. Data entry commenced in early November with organization and photography of the items immediately following. Once items were compiled, photographed and entered, they were displayed for public viewing on the TV Auction website. The event was also advertised on 93.3 FM “The Peak” and the items were listed in the Alberni Valley News during the week preceding the auction.
The preparation and execution the event accounted for many hours and involved most of the Club members, their spouses or partners and other members of the community. In addition to telephone bidding, the auction was streamed to computers, tablets and cellphones using a special button on the website. Some people were monitoring our auction from as far away as Vancouver. This year’s auction was another success with 268 items auctioned and approximately 200 businesses contributing.
Items being arranged for the Auction.
