MEETING MINUTES BEADLE PENNIES SUBMITTED PHOTO The Beadle Student Council sponsored a penny/spare change drive to raise funds for the local Meals on Wheels program. The students challenged grade levels to raise awareness and funds to donate to the March for Meals campaign. After a tour of Center, the students presented Geraldine Schnabel with $541.57. Two Yankton High School stu- dents, Allison Fejfar and Alex Heine, were recently honored as the February 2010 BAMAAR Students of the Month. The award, which received the name BAMAAR because it is sponsored by the building associ- ation, manufacturers association and area retailers, was first pre- sented during the 2008-2009 school year. It was designed to recognize outstanding students enrolled in Career and Technical Education classes at YHS and will be given by Yankton High School in conjunction with the Regional Technical Education Center (RTEC). Fejfar, a junior, and Heine, a sophomore, received T-shirts, certificates and other prizes donated by local businesses for earning the award. The daughter of Steve and Mary Fejfar of Yankton, she was nominated for the award by Bret Johnson, her Drafting I instructor. “Allison has shown great lead- ership and has a great attitude,” Johnson said. “Her work ethic and understanding of the CAD software and architectural draft- ing has gone above and beyond class expectations. Allison is also interested in the architectural field and will make an awesome student for a school of her choice in the future.” She enjoys her Drafting I class and is currently planning to attend college and major in archi- tecture, possibly at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln or at Ohio State. “I have wanted to be an archi- tect since I was young,” Fejfar said. “This class gives me the knowledge and experience, and helps me decide if this is really the career choice I want to pur- sue, and if I can do well as an architect in the future.” January’s other BAMAAR winner, Alex Heine, is the son of Ron Heine and Ann Heine of Yankton. He is enrolled in the Information Technology course at YHS and was nominat- ed for the award by his instructor, Todd Carr. “Alex is a very smart and moti- vated individual. He takes the con- tent from the class and runs with it,” Carr said. “He’s built his own comput- er and has a vast knowledge of software and hardware for both Mac and PC platforms.” Heine’s favorite part of the Information Technology course is when the class goes into the lab and does hands-on computer building projects. “This class teaches me the fundamentals of computers which will give me a good com- puter background for college,” Heine said. “I plan to attend col- lege for computer engineering and business. Then I want to be a computer engineer and hope- fully manage an engineering group.” Students, like Fejfar and Heine, who are enrolled in CTE classes at YHS are eligible for the BAMAAR Student of the Month awards and can be nomi- nated by their CTE instructors. A panel selects two monthly winners throughout the school year. To honor all of the monthly BAMAAR winners, a recognition ceremony will be held this spring. At that time, one of the monthly winners will be named the BAMAAR Student of the Year. BAMAAR Students Of The Month Announced Fejfar Heine The Yankton Sertoma Club recently held its annual Awards Banquet where the club awarded its Sertoman of the Year to Dan Wallbaum and the Service to Mankind Award to Pam Kettering. Master of Ceremonies was Jim Robinson who gave the audience a histo- ry of the club and all the activities the club has been involved with over the 40 plus years in Yankton. The club has raised an estimated $600,000 since 1967 in the Yankton communi- ty. Some of the large projects mentioned were the Sertoma baseball fields, the Territorial Capital Replica at Riverside Park, and bringing the Up with People and most recently the Young Americans to Yankton. Each year the Sertoma Club raises money through various fundraising events such as the Men’s and Ladies Spring Thaw and the River Boat Days Root Beer Float Booth. With the generosity of those who donate we are able to help sponsor many activities in the Yankton Community such as the youth base- ball, softball, football, JR Achievement and Science Olympiad. Throughout the years Sertoma has been able to help provide much needed hearing equipment to the local schools, sponsor and work monthly bingo at Majestic Bluffs and delivery pumpkins to kids grades K through 2nd grade. Thank you for your continued support for these projects. The Sertoma Club meets Thursday at Noon at the Waterfront.
