Introduction

In these turbulent political times, there has been much talk of readers being unable to tear themselves away from the 24-hour news cycle to read anything longer than an opinion piece. But at Serpent’s Tail we think Faulkner was right when he said ‘the best fiction is far more true than any journalism’, and this season we have the books to prove it.

Jarett Kobek’s Only Americans Burn in Hell is a ferociously damning, and yet irresistibly hilarious account of how liberal democracy has eaten itself and there might be no way back. Susan Choi’s forensically perceptive novel Trust Exercise examines the politics of sexual power and consent as played out across young people’s lives, and is the most nuanced contribution to the debates sparked by the #MeToo movement you could hope to read.

In perhaps the most wildly eclectic selection of books we’ve ever assembled, we also have poems about cats, the biography of a legendary nineteenth-century lesbian, fiction about a mid-life crisis spanning Germany and Japan, and finally Rebecca Kauffman’s gorgeous novel The Gunners, which isn’t about Arsenal but is about how the only thing that might get us through all the world’s madness is friendship.

Only Americans Burn in HellJarett Kobek

A hilarious and unmissable provocation about the death spiral of the West

What if you were a novelist in a world where the only media people consumed was spectacular pornography about war with titles like Wonder Woman and Captain America? What if your country had elected as its leader a shameless millionaire who was stealing your money, your democracy and your dignity? What if the media were owned by filthy-rich men who didn’t give two shits about any of it as long as it continued to make them filthy rich?

Wouldn’t it be enough to send you certifiably insane? To make you write a novel about an immortal lesbian fairy that mimicked the conventions of movies like Wonder Woman but became an accidental allegory for #MeToo? To write a savage death wail of a satire about how the rich stole everything from us?

Enough to make you, reader, consider laying off the spectacular pornography about war for long enough to read it?

Praise for I Hate the Internet:

‘Hilariously caustic ... his genius in this relentlessly quotable tirade is to hector you about the shady workings of money and power while making you laugh on every page’ Metro

Jarett Kobek is a Turkish-American writer living in California. His novella  ATTA, a psychedelic biography of the 9/11 bomber Mohamed Atta,  was an unexplained bestseller in parts of Canada. His first novel I Hate the Internet was a bestseller everywhere, but especially in Serbia where people really went nuts for it.

Trust ExerciseSusan Choi

An electrifying novel that will spark intense debate about how we make and break boundaries

In their first term at a competitive performing arts school, two students, Sarah and David, fall deeply and obsessively in love. Under the care of Mr Kingsley, their magnetic and manipulative drama instructor, they and their peers live in a rarefied bubble, where the boundaries between students and teachers become dangerously blurred. The outside world of family and class, academic pressure and the future can’t affect them – until it does – and they must deal with the ensuing rejection, rebellion and heartbreak.

Captivating and brilliant, Trust Exercise is a novel about the treacherous terrain of adolescence and what we lose, gain and never get over as we find our way into adulthood’s mysterious structures of sex and power.

A powerful contribution to conversations about the complexities of sex, power and consent in the #MeToo era

Praise for Susan Choi’s previous novels:

‘A writer whose intelligence and historical awareness effortlessly serve a breathtaking narrative ability’ Joan Didion

‘Raw, wild and daring’ Jennifer Egan

Susan Choi is the author of five novels and has been a finalist for the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award and the 2004 Pulitzer Prize. She is a winner of the Asian-American Literary Award for Fiction, the inaugural recipient of the PEN/W. G. Cat Poems

Poems about cats by the world’s greatest poets

Dogs are man’s best friend – unless you’re a poet. Across the ages, cats have provided their adopted humans with affection, mystery and innumerable metaphors. Cats raise a mirror up to their beholders, they endlessly captivate and hypnotise, frustrate and delight.

To poets, in particular, these enigmatic creatures are the most delightful and beguiling of muses, as they purr, prowl, hunt, play, meow and nap, often seeming oblivious to their so-called masters. Now these venerable furry companions have an anthology all of their own, to celebrate their unique beauty, varied characters and talent for catching mice.

Cat Poems offers a litter of odes to our beloved felines by some of the greatest poets of all time.

The perfect gift for literary cat lovers

Includes poems by Charles Baudelaire, Elizabeth Bishop, Stevie Smith, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Amy Lowell, Rainer Maria Rilke and W. B. Yeats

From silly to savage to softly purring, every flicker of the feline temperament is collected here for your enjoyment

Night TheatreVikram Paralkar

A surgeon negotiates the fine line between life and death

At dusk, a former surgeon goes about closing up his dilapidated clinic in rural India. As he completes the day’s paperwork, the surgeon is visited by a family – a teacher, his pregnant wife and their young son. Victims of a senseless attack, they reveal to the surgeon wounds that they could not possibly have survived. And so the surgeon finds himself faced with a preposterous task: to mend the wounds of the dead family before sunrise so that they may return to life.

But this is not the only challenge laid before the surgeon, and as the night unfolds he realises his future is tied more closely to that of the dead family than he could have imagined.

At once dustily realist and magically unreal, Night Theatre is a powerful fable about the miracles we ask of doctors, and the fine line between life and death.

A memorable literary-medical parable that brings a doctor’s eye for detail to a novel of fantastical inventiveness and daring, perfect for fans of Mohsin Hamid, Atul Gawande, Kiran Desai and Gavin Francis

The author is a practising doctor with first-hand experience of the impossible situations medical practitioners face every day

Vikram Paralkar is a physician-scientist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA. He was born and raised in Mumbai.

Our Lady of Everything Susan Finlay

A bittersweet story of clashing beliefs and confused identities

Dr David Goldstein might have finished a PhD on religion, but he’s still no closer to knowing what he believes or what in Middle Earth he’s doing behind the counter of a Games Workshop, selling figurines of rat men to spotty teenagers. David’s also no nearer to making his feelings known to his friend Meg or wangling an invitation to Nottingham’s only Hindu temple, as part of his endless quest for a belief system.

Meg is just as stuck as David – her parents keep finding ways to remind her she isn’t married, her boss at the Evening Post is weirdly obsessed with her heritage and David wants her to take part in his magikal experiments. The only sane person she knows is the romantic-but-cynical autodidact Katarzyna Flowers. But Katarzyna’s soldier boyfriend Eoin has stopped answering her emails and a strange video is doing the rounds ...

A funny, poignant novel with a diverse cast of characters, Our Lady of Everything is about love, faith and what people do when they don’t have any of the answers

This offbeat, witty debut is a must-read for devotees of Nell Zink and Nicola Barker

The GunnersRebecca Kauffman

Will a lifetime of secrets draw the Gunners closer together – or force them apart for good?

From childhood into adolescence, the Gunners were an inseparable gang of friends, taking their name from the previous occupants of the abandoned house they used to play in. One of their number, Sally, suddenly stops speaking to all of them and never explains why. Years later, her suicide forces the Gunners back together for Sally’s funeral.

Mikey, the only one who remained in the town where they grew up, is worried they will have little in common when they finally meet again. He is also unsure how to tell them he is going blind. But the other Gunners have secrets of their own to share, secrets that might shed some light on Sally’s tragic decision. The Gunners is a generous and wistful look at growing up and what it really means to be a friend.

A thoughtful novel about friendship and loyalty for readers who loved Meg Wolitzer’s The Interestings and E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars

‘Perceptive, funny, and endearing – reminiscent of The Big Chill and St. Elmo’s Fire, this remarkable novel is just as satisfying and provides readers with an entire cast of characters who will feel like old friends’ Publishers Weekly

Rebecca Kauffman studied classical violin performance at the Manhattan School of Music before receiving an MFA in Creative Writing from NYU. The Gunners is her second novel.

VirtuosoYelena Moskovich

A dreamlike novel of love and loss in the post-communist diaspora

For the first ten years of her life, Jana was a simple Czech girl, her days run with grey precision by the Czechoslovakian State Security. Then the raven-haired girl Zorka appeared. Jana, now an interpreter in Paris, hasn’t seen Zorka in a decade. Aimée is in Paris too, living under a menacing blue cloud after the death of her wife.

As Aimée and Jana’s stories slowly circle through the surreal fluctuations of the past and present, they lead inexorably together, to a mysterious bar on Paris’s Rue de Prague …

Written with the dramatic tension of Euripidean tragedy and the dreamlike quality of a David Lynch film, Virtuoso is an audacious, mesmerising novel of grief and revolt, of first loves and last loves.

Praise for The Natashas:

‘A brave, original work ... Moskovich’s prose radiates with heat’ Lauren Elkin

‘A surreal and distinctively written exploration of identity ... wonderfully original’Kirsty Logan, Guardian

Yelena Moskovich was born in Ukraine and emigrated to the US with her family in 1991. After graduating from Emerson College, Boston, she moved to Paris to study at the Lecoq School of Physical Theatre, and later at Université Paris 8. Her plays have been produced in the US, Vancouver, Paris, and Stockholm.

The Pine Islands Marion PoschmannTranslated by Jen Calleja

A charming, profound tale of lost souls in search of transformation in Japan

When Gilbert Silvester, a journeyman lecturer on beard fashions in film, awakes one day from a dream that his wife has cheated on him, he flees – immediately, irrationally, inexplicably – for Japan.

In Tokyo he discovers the travel writings of the great Japanese poet Bashō. Suddenly, from Gilbert’s directionless crisis there emerges a purpose: a pilgrimage in the footsteps of the poet to see the moon rise over the islands of Matsushima. Falling into step with another pilgrim – a young Japanese student called Yosa, clutching a copy of The Complete Manual of Suicide – Gilbert travels with Yosa across Bashō’s disappearing Japan, one in search of a perfect ending and the other a new beginning.

The Pine Islands is a serene, playful, profoundly moving story of the transformations we seek and the ones we find along the way.

For readers who loved The Guest Cat, Robert Seethaler’s A Whole Life and Lost in Translation, The Pine Islands is a quirky yet profound tale of companionship in unlikely places

‘The Pine Islands is a masterpiece ... Marion Poschmann is a central figure in German contemporary literature’ Die Zeit

Marion Poschmann was born in Essen in 1969. A prize-winning poet and novelist, she has won both of Germany’s premier poetry prizes, has been twice shortlisted for the German Book Prize and won the 2013 Wilhelm Raabe Literature Prize.

There Will Be No Miracles Here Casey Gerald

The testament of a life in the shadow of the American Dream

Casey Gerald’s story begins at the end of the world: on New Year’s Eve 1999, Casey gathers with the congregation of his grandfather’s black evangelical church to witness the rapture. The journey that follows is a moving story of a young man learning to question the dreams of success and prosperity that are the foundation of modern America.

Growing up gay in an ordinary black neighbourhood in Dallas, Casey finds himself on a remarkable path to the inner sanctums of power on Wall Street and in Washington DC. But even as he lives the American Dream, he realises that salvation stories like his own are all part of the plan to keep others down.

Shot through with sly humour and quiet fury, There Will Be No Miracles Here is an extraordinary memoir that forces us to judge the success of our society not on those who rise highest, but on how many we leave behind at their expense.

‘Somehow Casey Gerald has pulled off the most urgently political, most deeply personal and most engagingly spiritual statement of our time by just looking outside his window and inside himself. Extraordinary’ Marlon James

‘Casey Gerald’s book is urgent, mesmeric, soaring, desperately serious, wounded and, at times, slyly, brilliantly comic’Colm Tóibín

Casey Gerald majored in political science at Yale. After receiving an MBA from Harvard Business School, he cofounded MBAs Across America. He has been featured on MSNBC, at TED and SXSW, on the cover of Fast Company, and in The New York Times, Financial Times and Guardian, among others.

Gentleman JackAnne Lister: Regency Landowner, Seducer & Secret DiaristAngela SteideleTranslated by Katy Derbyshire

The hidden history of a great British eccentric

Anne Lister was a Yorkshire heiress, a world traveller and a proud lesbian in an era when it was difficult just to be female. She wrote her diary in code, including details of her liaisons with women. Liberated by her money, she remained unmarried, opened a colliery and chose to dress all in black.

On inheriting Shibden Hall, Anne travelled abroad, before returning to court Ann Walker, another wealthy heiress twelve years her junior. They renovated Shibden Hall together and considered themselves married, to the horror of Walker’s relatives. On a trip to Georgia, Lister caught a fever and died. Walker was subsequently shut up in the same lunatic asylum as Eliza, one of Lister’s earlier conquests.

Gentleman Jack is a lively, substantial biography of a cult historical figure and includes fascinating excerpts from Lister’s diaries.

The hardback will be published in November 2018, with the expectation of broadsheet reviews and widespread critical coverage, to be followed by a Gentleman Jack paperback to coincide with the major BBC/HBO drama of Anne Lister’s life. The series, starring Suranne Jones and written by Sally Wainwright, is currently in production and will be coming to TV in spring 2019

Her Body and Other PartiesCarmen Maria Machado

A prize-winning, genre-bending collection of short stories which has already achieved cult status for its creepy brilliance

In these provocative stories, startling narratives map the realities of women’s lives and the violence visited on their bodies. Machado demolishes the borders between magical realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism.

A wife refuses her husband’s entreaties to remove the mysterious green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague spreads across the earth. A sales clerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery about the store’s dresses. One woman’s surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted house guest.

Sexy and caustic, comic and cut-throat, Her Body and Other Parties is brilliant, disturbing and exquisite.

Her Body and Other Parties has been shortlisted for the US National Book Awards, the Dylan Thomas Prize, the Shirley Jackson Award and the Nebula Award
