30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.

31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.“context …. Mark 6 : 7-12

• Jesus was aware the apostles and were tired, exhausted, wearied from the ‘works’ they have been doing. They needed ‘rest’ (anapauó). To rest from weariness, tiredness.

• Purpose of ‘rest’ (anapauó) is to regain strength, to be refreshed to continue

REST (anapauó) Mark 6: 30-31

Page 6: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

REST (anapauó) Matthew 11:28-30

LESSONS about REST (anapauó)

1. Rest is ‘sacred’ - the purpose is to rest from weariness. Biblical worldview KOG - no secular vs spiritual , no physical vs spiritual.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God

1 Cor 10:30

Page 8: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

2. Rest is important. God wired us to have ‘rest’ regularly and at intermittent periods. In science (chronobiology) – biological clock and circadian rhythm are in built-in.

3. Our responsibility to take care of this “temple” that God has given us. In the Biblical Worldview, Christ restored 1. Vertical Relationship

2. Horizontal Relationship

3. Internal Relationship (with SELF)

4. Other/External Relationship (with CREATION)

4. Different forms of “rest” - engage with the

purpose to refresh/ renew/restore/ refuel us

Question :

Do you need to rest (anapauó) ?

Page 14: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

• REST (katapauó) the opposite of REST(anapauó)

• ‘kata’ - motion from higher plane to a lower plane, down with reference to absolute end-point (CEASE because it is finished)

• ‘pauo’ – to pause, to put to stop

REST (katapauó) Hebrew 4: 1-11

Page 15: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

• Bring down completely - Calming down of the winds

• To make to be quiet, to cause to be at rest

• To settle down, to colonise , to abode

REST (katapauó) Hebrew 4: 1-11

Page 16: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

• REST (anapauó) - cease from our work for rest

• REST (katapauó) - not cease from our work but ‘in’ work i.e. to trust and be rested in God (His works and promises).

REST (katapauó) Hebrew 4:1-11

Page 17: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

1 Therefore, since the promise of entering his reststill stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.

2 For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

REST (katapauó) Hebrew 4:1-11

Page 18: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

3 Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, "So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'" And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world.

4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: "And on the seventh day God rested from all his work."

REST (katapauó) Hebrew 4:1-11

Page 19: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

5 And again in the passage above he says, "They shall never enter my rest." 6 It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience.7 Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before:"Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts."

REST (katapauó) Hebrew 4:1-11

Page 20: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.

9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;

10 for anyone who enters God's rest also restsfrom his own work, just as God did from his.

11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.

REST (katapauó) Hebrew 4:1-11

Page 21: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

1. It is of God (my rest, God’s rest)

2. It is for us who believe – relationship

3. It is supernatural - quiet and rest , a restedness and confidence in all situations (Phil 4:7)

Psalms 23/ Psalms 131 / Isa 30:15

Lessons about REST (katapauó)

Page 22: Sermon 2016 # 4 rest and restedness

Psalms 1311 My heart is not proud, O Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great mattersor things too wonderful for me. 2 But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. 3 O Israel, put your hope in the Lord both now and forevermore.
