3. Scrabble [Serkan Yürekli] (22 points)

Put at most one letter into each cell so that the given words can be read either across (left-to-right) or down (top-to-bottom) in consecutive cells in the grid. Every word must appear in the grid exactly once, and no other words may appear in the grid (that is, if two cells are filled and are adjacent, then there must be a word that uses both of them). Every word must have either a blank cell or the edge of the grid before and after it. All letters must be (orthogonally) connected in a single group.

Copies of one letter are already supplied in the grid. All instances of that letter are given.

Answer: For each designated row, enter its contents from left to right, ignoring any blank cells. If all cells in the row are blank, enter a single letter ‘X’.

Example Answer: CYPRUSO,ONMUO,AUR,GA

4. Count the Knight Paths [Serkan Yürekli] (35 points; 15 points for an answer that is off by 1)

How many ways can the word “PUZZLE” be found in the grid as a knight path? A knight path is one where consecutive letters are a knight-move apart. (A knight-move is two spaces in one orthogonal direction, followed by one space in a perpendicular direction to the first.)

Partial credit will be given for an incorrect answer that is close to the correct answer.

Answer: The number of paths.

5-6. Slitherlink [Fatih Kamer Anda] (23, 27 points)Draw a single, non-intersecting loop that only consists of line segments between the dots along the dotted lines. A number inside a cell indicates how many of the edges of that cell are part of the loop.

Answer: For each designated row, enter the lengths (number of cells) of each segment of cells inside the loop, from left to right. Use only the last digit for two digit numbers; e.g., use ‘0’ for a segment of length 10. If there are no cells inside the loop for a row, enter the single digit ‘0’.

7-9. Pillboxes [Fatih Kamer Anda] (12, 13, 18 points)

Locate the indicated set of pillboxes in the grid. Pillboxes have a 1×3 shape, do not overlap each other, and can be oriented horizontally or vertically. Each pillbox has a different value, as indicated to the right of the grid. Each number to the left and top of the grid reveals the total value of all pillboxes in that row or column, respectively.

The dots in the grid are only for entering your answer.

Answer: Enter the contents of each dotted cell, reading the dots from left to right. (Ignore which row the dots are in.) If the cell is part of a pillbox, enter the value of that pillbox; if the cell is not inside a pillbox, enter ‘0’.

10-11. Kakuro [Serkan Yürekli] (30, 40 points)

Place a digit from 1 to 9 into each white cell. The numbers in grey cells indicate the sum of digits in the adjacent “word” across or down. (Across “words” are to the right of their sums, Down “words” are below their sums.) Digits may not repeat within a “word.”

It is possible for some “words” to not have a provided sum.

Answer: For the indicated rows, enter their contents. (Ignore non-white cells when doing so.)

12. Tapa [Murat Can Tonta] (37 points)

Shade some empty cells black; cells with numbers cannot be shaded. All black cells connect along edges to create a single connected region. (It is permissible for the region to touch itself at a corner, but touching at a corner does not connect the region.) No 2×2 group of squares can be entirely shaded black.

Numbers in a cell indicate the lengths of contiguous black cell groups along the “ring” of 8 cells touching that cell (fewer for cells along the outside edge). If there is more than one number in a cell, then there must be at least one white (unshaded) cell between the black cell groups. The numbers are given in no particular order. As a special case, if the number given in a cell is a zero (0), it means that none of the cells around that cell may be shaded black.

Answer: For each designated row, enter the length in cells of each of the shaded segments from left to right. Use only the last digit for two-digit numbers; e.g., use ‘0’ for a segment of size 10. If there are no black cells in the row, enter a single digit ‘0’.

8ROUND 1WPF PUZZLE GP

Shade some cells black (leaving the other cells white) so that the grid is divided into non-overlapping regions; cells of the same color are considered in the same region if they are adjacent along edges. The black regions must form the set of given shapes; each shape may be rotated and/or reflected in the final answer. Shapes cannot touch along an edge, but can touch at corners. All white cells must be in the same region.

A cell with a black circle must be shaded and a cell with a white circle must not be shaded.

The letters on the given shapes are only for entering your answer.

Answer: For each designated row, enter the contents of each cell, from left to right. For each cell, its contents are the letter of the shape occupying that cell, or the letter ‘A’ if the cell is not shaded.

Example Answer: OOAAALA,AAAIIII

16-17. Easy as LITS [Murat Can Tonta, Serkan Yürekli] (21, 64 points)

Shade exactly four connected cells in each outlined region to form a tetromino, so that the following conditions are true: (1) All tetrominoes are connected into one large shape along their edges; (2) No 2×2 group of cells can be entirely shaded; (3) When two tetrominoes share an edge, they must not be of the same shape, regardless of rotations or reflections. (Each tetromino, based on its shape, looks like the letter “L”, “I”, “T”, or “S” or their reflection. Not all four letters have to be present in the grid; for example, it is possible for your solution to not have any “I” shapes.)

The letters outside the grid indicate the shape of the first tetromino that can be seen in the respective row or column from the respective direction.

Cells with an ‘X’ (if given) are not part of any region.

Answer: For each designated row, enter the contents of each cell, from left to right. For each cell, its contents are the letter of the tetromino occupying that cell, or the letter ‘X’ if the cell is not shaded.

18. Skyscraper Blocks [Salih Alan] (110 points)

Place a number from 1 to X (integers only) into each cell so that each number appears exactly once in each row, and no more than once in each column. (X is the number of cells in each row.) Each number represents a skyscraper of its respective height. The numbers outside the grid indicate how many skyscrapers can be seen in the respective row or column from the respective direction; smaller skyscrapers are hidden behind higher ones. Some numbers may already be filled in for you.

The cells are separated into pairs. When the pairs are interpreted as two-digit numbers, the provided inequality signs indicate the appropriate relationship between adjacent pairs.

Answer: For each designated row, enter its contents. Do not include any numbers outside the grid.
