SERIES: PRESSING TO A BLESSING

THE STRENGTH OF GENTLENESS – Pastor Alton Trimble Bible Study & Life Groups: Wednesday, April 29, 2020

MATTHEW 5:5 “God blesses those who are gentle. The whole earth will belong to them!”

EIGHT BENEFITS OF BEING GENTLE:

1. GENTLENESS DEFUSES CONFLICT.

PROVERBS 15:1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (NIV) ECCLESIASTES 10:4 “If your boss is angry with you, don't quit! A quiet gentle spirit can overcome even great mistakes.” (NLT)

2. GENTLENESS DISARMS CRITICS.

1 CORINTHIANS 4:13 ‘We respond gently when evil things are said about us.” (NLT) TITUS 2:8 “Your conversation should be so sensible that anyone who wants to argue will be ashamed because there won't be anything to criticize in anything you say!” (LB) 2 TIMOTHY 2:24-25 (NLT) “A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. 25 Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth.”

3. GENTLENESS IS PERSUASIVE.

PROVERBS 25:15 “Gentle speech breaks down rigid defenses.” (Mes) “A gentle word can get through to the hard-headed.” (NCV) PROVERBS 25:15 (CEV) “Patience and gentle talk can convince a ruler and overcome any problem.” PROVERBS 16:21 “A wise, mature person is known for understanding. The more pleasant his words, the more persuasive he is.” (TEV)

4. GENTLENESS IS ATTRACTIVE.

1 TIMOTHY 6:11 (GW) “As a man of God... pursue what God approves of: godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.” RUTH 2:13-14 Ruth said to Boaz “You are very kind to me. You have made me feel better by speaking gently to me... So then at lunchtime, Boaz said to Ruth, "Come, have a piece of bread

with me and dip it in the sauce... Then Boaz passed some roasted grain to her, and she ate until she was satisfied, and still had food left over.” (TEV) 1 PETER 3:4 “You should be known for the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” (NLT)

5. GENTLENESS COMMUNICATES LOVE.

COLOSSIANS 3:19 “Husbands, love your wives and be gentle with them.” (NCV) EPHESIANS 6:4 “Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger. Do not exasperate them to resentment, but rear them tenderly in the training and discipline and counsel of the Lord.” (Amp)

6. GENTLENESS EARNS RESPECT.

PROVERBS 11:16 “A woman of gentle grace will be respected.” (Mes) NUMBERS 12:3 Amp “Moses was very meek and gentle man. In fact, he was more gentle than anyone else on the face of the earth!”

7. GENTLENESS WITNESSES TO UNBELIEVER.

TITUS 3:2 “Believers should never speak evil of ANYONE, nor be quarrelsome. Instead they should be gentle and show courtesy to everyone.” (GW) 1 PETER 3:15 “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (NIV)

8. GENTLENESS MAKES ME LIKE JESUS.

MATTHEW11:28- 29 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, FOR I AM GENTLE and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (NIV) GALATIANS 5:23 “The fruit of the Spirit is... gentleness!” (NIV) PHILIPPIANS 2:4-5 (GN) “Don’t just think about your own affairs, but be interested in others too, and in what they are doing. Your attitude should be the same as Jesus Christ’s.” ROMANS 14:1 (Mes) Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don't see things the way you do. And don't jump all over them every time they do or say something you don't agree with—even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department. Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently.
