Summary
n What‟s „overlap analysis‟?
n Why would you want to do it?
n How is it done?
n Exporting the data
n Questions and comments
What’s ‘overlap analysis’?
n First launched as part of Serials Solutions in
2004
n It “shows, for each database in a library's
collection, the number of journals in that
database that are unique to that database, and
the number that are available elsewhere in the
library's collection” SerialsSolutions press release, 29th April 2004
n So it identifies duplicate journals and titles which
have identical coverage
Why would you want to do it?
n A quick way of identifying titles which are
available in more than one provider
n Identify and remove duplicate entries
n Check coverage is correct by comparing
alternative providers (i.e. Wiley and SwetsWise)
n Identifying oddities and errors
n Simple process with minimal effort required

How is it done? – 2
How is it done? – 3 ‘Run analysis’
What do all these columns mean?
n Title unique – the number of titles only available
through that database and no other.
n Title overlap – a journal which is available in
more than one database.
n Full holding overlap – the same content is
available in more than one database
n Partial holding overlap – some of the same
content is available in more than one database
n Holding unique – title available in more than
one database but without overlapping coverage
Reviewing the situation
n We‟ve now done overlap analysis on our entire
collection
n Let‟s restrict to three databases
n Click „edit comparison list‟ and then click on
„remove‟

Reviewing the situation
n Do we want to revise this further or export the
data to analyse?
n Let‟s export the data to Excel.
