I watched a beautiful sunset from my front porch the other evening. The whole sky filled with clouds that were tinged pink by the sinking sun. My husband turned to me and said, “if we were on vacation right now we would be out here every night to see this.” How true! It got me thinking, “how many opportunities to enjoy our spaces do we miss because of our mindset”?

We work 50 some weeks a year and yearn for the week or two that we go away and let go for a while? I believe that with some awareness and a little planning, we can create moments in our everyday that can give us that wonderful sense of “getting away from it all”!

When I first opened The Body Serene I intended to provide spa services along with products that would help our customers create a spa feeling at home as well.

The concept is similar, take a little time to look up from all of the pressure and to do lists and enjoy some parts of each day. Sitting outside admiring the gardens we toil over, taking a luxurious bath, walking on one of the amazing trails in our community after dinner are all small but great ways to reduce stress. Simple pleasures can add up to some astonishing additions to our quality of life.

Our team understands that we provide that sense of escape for our customers when you visit us and we strive to create spaces and experiences that enhance that feeling. To that end we continue to upgrade our facility (New Pedicure Units, page 4) and construct specials to allow for savings on services that make escape more affordable (“Staycation” Special for July and August, page 4). Our neighbor from Floral and Hardy Garden Center tells us about creating a little haven in your own backyard! (page 6)

So come away with us for a little while at the Body Serene and feel a little vacation right here at home!

Thanks,Roseanne

MEET OUR NEIGHBORS! FLORAL AND HARDY garden center

We have been so fortunate to have Floral and Hardy as a next door neighbor for many years! Lowell Steinberg purchased the business four years ago and he has created an amazing resource for all things “garden” ever since!

In the spirit of creating a home based oasis, we thought it would be a perfect time to introduce our customers to all that Floral and Hardy has to offer!

At this time in the summer, they have beautiful, mature containers and hanging baskets ready-made for your deck. The work is already done and these arrangements are great for upcoming parties or for your own enjoyment! Their statues, fountains and locally made birdhouses and birdbaths can also add to the serenity of your outside space.

To keep things lovely into the fall, in late July, Lowell and his team will begin to bring out an array of plants that will bloom for the later season. In September they will hold classes on container building for fall plants, pumpkins and gourds. As always, their September scarecrow building workshops are a huge hit for families in our community! As a special treat for our customers, later this summer Floral and Hardy will offer tomatoes, peppers and herbs as a complimentary treat! We will post availability as soon as they are ripe!

To find out more about all Floral and Hardy has to offer visit them at floralandhardyofskippack.com, call at 610-584-0797 or simply stop in and “Say Hello!” after your next visit to the Body Serene!

Unique treasures for you, your home and your garden

DD StevensonDD Stevenson has been with us at The Body Serene for nine years and we are so lucky! Years ago she was working for Quest Diagnostic Laboratories and an elderly care facility. It was at this center that DD ‘s talent in massage therapy came to light. She used to rub the shoulders of the therapists who worked there and one of them introduced her to the Massage program at the Philadelphia

School of Massage. After graduation, DD miraculously found us and the rest is history!

In her free time, DD loves spending time with her eleven grandchildren and they love spending time with her! DD is also very active in her church and helps with children’s activities, cooking and much more each and every weekend!

When asked why she loves giving massages she replies, “It’s the giving part. I feel honored when someone let’s me work on them and rewarded when they get off the table feeling relief from pain and stress.” She also says,” I love The Body Serene for its entire environment. From the team and their abilities to the customers and our facility it’s a wonderful place to be a part of the whole.”

We are honored to have such a loving spirit and talented therapist as part of our team. Things are always good here when we hear DD’s infectious laugh in the spa!

We recognized that it was time to replace our pedicure units and we are so thrilled! Our new European Touch Units are so comfortable and sleek! The feedback from our customers has been so positive and everyone loves the massage feature! We invite you to come in and try them!

have arrived!

Suzanne DiamondWe are doubly lucky because we also have had Suzanne Diamond on our team for the past nine years as well! Suzanne attended Gwynedd Mercy College to receive her nursing degree and worked as a practicing RN for many years. She has spent the second half of her nursing career on medical reviews which left her no time for patient care. Massage Therapy fulfilled that need for patient

interaction and we are pleased that she has been part of our team ever since!

Suzanne is married to her husband Jim, pastor of Freedom Community Church in Lansdale and she is the loving mother of two sons, two daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren! In addition to spending time with her family , Suzanne loves doing water aerobics, reading, travelling and entertaining (albeit she says that her hubby does all of the cooking!)

Suzanne says that her favorite part of being a member of our Body Serene team is “the family feeling we have here. Everyone works well together and respects each other’s differences. WE all complement each other with our strengths!”

It’s a compliment to us that someone of Suzanne’s talents and background would find a home her with us!

NEW MEN’S PEDICUREWe love having the guys in the spa because they need care as much as we do! We decided to create a special pedicure just for men so they can enjoy a service geared specifically to their needs!

First, we’ll place you in a sea salt foot soak infused with Geranium Sage. Next, we cut and file your nails and exfoliate your skin with a clove sugar scrub. After we care for your cuticles we wrap your feet in a Black Baltic Body Mud with steamed towels. Enjoy an adult beverage while we massage in Geranium Sage Massage Cream to relax and moisturize your tired feet.

We buff to shine or apply a matte polish to complete this manly service! Tell your guys…no more excuses your feet can look amazing!

Questions & ANSWERS WITH BARBARA STRATTON, MIRA SALONCurly girls have spent so much time , effort and money trying to straighten their lovely locks and now it is time to embrace your beautiful tresses!

SERENE MAGAZINE | SPRING2012 :: 7

It seems there are more straight haired people than curly, is that true?Actually only 45% have straight, 40% are wavy and 15% have curly.

What makes hair curly? If you take a cross section of a strand of hair it will be oval or irregular in shape as opposed to round like straight hair would be. The folicle emerges from the scalp at a curve. Genetics also plays a big role.

Is all curly hair coarse in texture?Curly hair comes in many textures, it can be fine, wavy, kinky, coarse or any combination.

How often should curly hair be shampooed?Only 2-3 times per week, frequent shampooing is not curly hair’s friend. Using a shampoo formulated for curly hair is important because curly hair has special needs. To revive your curls between shampoos you can wet your hair and use a good leave in conditioner. We recommend Ouidad Moisture Lock. Also Ouidad Botanical Boost Spray will reactivate your curl.

What if I don’t want to commit to permanent color? There is always the option for a few extensions. You don’t have to have a full head of them but if you want a pop of color without the commitment this is the way to go. Human hair, attached with a cylinder, can be blonde or if you are really up for it we have a variety of fantasy colors.

Will a deep conditioner help my curl?Curly hair actually has gaps in it’s structure. The best way to address this that we have found is Ouidad 12 Minute Treatment. It penetrates the hair and bonds with the cuticle to restructure and revive your hair for enhanced performance of your curls.

My hair always gets frizzy when it dries, how can I stop this from happening?Use a leave in conditioner and always apply styling gel to wet hair! Use enough to cover to the ends and then don’t play with it till it is dry. To see styling instructions go to the Ouidad website and watch the Rake & Shake video. It will change your life!!

Is there a special way I should have my hair cut?Yes! Ouidad has developed a cutting method to enhance and puzzle curl together for that beautiful defined curl. Mira Salon has 2 stylists that are certified in this method, undergoing intense training at the Ouidad Training Center in New York. If you have unruly curls or just want to make the most of what you are blessed with stop in and let us make the best recommendations for your style and maintaining your hair with the best products for you.

PRODUCTSPOTLIGHT

Family-owned and operated, Sonoma Lavender cultivates about five acres of lavender—that’s about 7,000 lavender plants. Proprietors Rebecca and Gary, along with their two children, plant, tend, harvest, and carefully dry the crop. Then local artisans take over, hand-crafting the company’s unique product line, ranging from wreaths and other decorative accessories, to pillows and sachets, to their “spa line” of products.

Types of lavenderAccording to owner Rebecca, English lavender, Laven-dula angustifolia, has a sweet, flowery aroma and is used in the company’s bath products and lotions. “Provence” and “Grosso” varieties of lavender, both widely grown in Provence, France, are less floral and more herb-like in fragrance, and lend an appealing but not-too-sweet scent to sachets and pillows.

lavender’s aTTribuTesWhat makes lavender so special? First of all, lavender is considered the most important aroma in aromatherapy, an ancient art that is just now becoming popular in this country. Lavender is known for its “balancing” proper-ties. If you are weary and have low energy, lavender is energizing; if you are feeling overstressed, lavender is calming and soothes frazzled nerves. Lavender revital-izes the body and tends the spirit, bringing you back to a state of balance.
