Meet your new Committee MemberAt the recent Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 19th March, there were four positions up for election: Vice President – Bruce Shelton - unopposed; Treasurer - Steve Davie - unopposed and two committee positions - Michael Curwood - re-elected and a new member to the committee - Bill Haslett.Note: For full results of the election see back page.

Bill has been a member of Phillip Island RSL for over 20 years and a member of the RSL golf section for 14 years fulfilling roles including fundraising events and golf days. Bill owns and operates a family business in Cowes – Pristine Pools and brings business acumen, professionalism, a sense of pride and loyalty to the Committee.

Morning Melodies has grown from strength to strength and this year, is no different. Seats are snapped up very quickly for each show, so make sure you contact Welfare Services straight after each show to ensure you have a seat for the next. Complimentary tea and coffee is available from 10:00am. Phillip Island RSL heavily subsidises lunch which is only $10 for an alternate drop of fish, chips and salad or roast of the day.Coupled with 2 chances to win a hamper and a $1 keno ticket, there’s no excuse not to have a great time. Bookings must be made with Welfare Services during business hours on 5952 1004. Bookings for each show can now be made the day after the event through until the dayprior to the next event, given availability – no long term bookings are taken. (Sorry, no children allowed).

Veteran Assistance Welfare Services has been busy dealing with a few Veterans in need of varied assistance. We are close to purchasing a CPAP device for a Service member (the second for a member in as many months). We have purchased a new oven for a dependant of a Veteran, as well as assisting in organising delivery and installation. Upon information received from The Bass Coast Veteran Centre (Wonthaggi RSL) we have organised for a Service member to receive financial planning advice (via a complimentary government program).

We will be looking to branch out into some new areas of Veteran assistance. Programs that will be included: day trip/outings for Veterans, programs that are targeted at younger Veterans, as well as working in conjunction with the National Vietnam Veterans Museum to coordinate activities that involve Vietnam War Service Veterans.

The Circle of Friends Program On Tuesday 7th March, Welfare Services re-launched the Circle of Friends Program which is a social activity for some of our older members who are living on their own who benefit from meeting other members, enjoying a meal and conversation. It’s planned to conduct these luncheons monthly.

Young Diggers- Digger Dogs Program In 2017 Welfare Services will continue to donate to the Dog Squad section of The Young Diggers Charity. This program provides young Veterans with dogs that have been rescued and rehabilitated. The companionship of a pet can improve a person’s wellbeing, especially for people who have had ongoing mental health issues particularly PTSS.

Service Members aged 70-79 Contact Program Late in February, Welfare Services initiated direct phone contact with our Service members aged between 70-79 years old in order to inform them of the services that can be provided to them (Transport etc). This activity will become an ongoing program for the Welfare Services team.

Breakfast Program You know when a particular program is working when people start asking about its return. This year, even the children at Cowes Primary School and wondering when it will resume. And happily to say, the dedicated team who conduct the Breakfast Program at Cowes Primary School will re-commence in April. The Breakfast Program volunteers include RSL vice president Bruce Shelton and wife Helen and RSL members Gay and Roy Gunn.

Welfare Services has been assisting Service members aged 80 and over in a variety of ways including: medical transport, garden maintenance, organising of home care/cleaning via Bass Coast Health and assisting with DVA contact.

Our plan is to contact our over 80’s Service members directly every 3 to 4 months to monitor their wellbeing.

Activities include morning tea, gentle exercise, speakers, games and trivia, carpet bowls, bus trips and outings and lunch is subsidised by the Phillip Island RSL.

Members are encouraged to attend in house meetings on a regular basis to qualify for subsidised outings and bus trips. Points will be awarded for attendance for subsidised outings; legitimate reasons for non attendance will be considered if we are notified.

Islander's Day ClubThe Club meets every Monday atthe Phillip Island RSL’s ANZAC room excluding public holidays.

As part of Phillip Island RSL’s ongoing commitment to local groups and organisations, we have partnered with the following groups for 2017Artists’ Society of Phillip Island annual Easter Art Show. In addition, the Society has been given the opportunity to install a display case showing member’s works in the foyer at the Phillip Island RSL, thereby strengthening the relationship further.

Rotary Biennial Art Show at San Remo Conducted over the Labour day weekend – Phillip Island RSL donated the finger food at the Opening night preview and awards ceremony.

Phillip Island Football Netball ClubPhillip Island RSL will continue its support of the Seniors and reserves football teams for the 2017 season.

San Remo and Phillip Island Tourism & Business Association’s 2017 Winter Arts Trail Held over Queen’s Birthday weekend and the following week. Phillip Island RSL is proud to support this annual event that is designed to encourage visitors to the region during the off peak tourism season. The Trail connects local artists with local

business and visitors literally follow the trail and have the chance to win a stunning sculpture by Heather Fahnle from Mosaics by the Bay.

Boomerang Bags Phillip IslandPhillip Island RSL was the chosen venue to start the first stitch a thon making Boomerang Bags for the local community. In a bid to rid Phillip Island of plastic bags, this group of 8 volunteers met and organised equipment, fabric and designs to commence making several hundred boomerang bags. The aim is to launch the concept late June/July initially at Cowes IGA. Shoppers can either borrow or purchase their own boomerang bag for their shopping.

Recently, Terry took delivery of a very generous donation from the Berwick TEC at Chisholm Institute, Berwick campus in the form of ear muffs and chisels.

Terry said “the ear muffs will certainly help prevent hearing loss or even further hearing loss with the boys and the chisels will come in great use for the various restoration projects on the go”. A big thanks to Peter Sells, Manager at Berwick TEC for the much appreciated donation.

Recently, the Shed has made sets for Offshore Theatre’s forthcoming play “The Shifting Heart” (30th March to 8th April) at the Cowes Cultural Centre. Community projects, repairs and restorations are always welcome.

Over the years, there has been in excess of 130 men at one time or another register as members and currently have 25 active and around 10 others

who drop in on occasions.

The Men’s Shed is growing! And according to co ordinator, Terry Heffernan, “it can’t come sooner. The framework is up and in the near future, the carpentry shed will join up with the metal shed giving more space for the “shedders” to work on their various projects, and have a better space for their morning catch up cuppas!”
