The Cruel Son

³Son, all that I have is yours now. I am already old and I¶m giving you the responsibility of

managing our business. I believe in you,´ the father was saying to the elder son in their talk after the

generous party for the once prodigal son. After all, the elder son deserves it. The father was

technically true, since the younger son had wasted all of his part of the inheritance.

By and by, life settled down. The older brother continued to do well and was admired by all of

his excellent performance. He was acknowledged and his name reverberates flamboyantly in their

place. Their family business became one of the highest grossing companies in their town.

³Congratulations son. Good job! I have no regrets of placing you as the head of the

company. I am now secured for the business is in good hands,´ the father remarked.

³Well Dad, thank you. I am happy that you can now recognize me and my efforts for the

family,´ the elder son replied. The glooms felt by the senior son to his father we¶re somewhat

lessened. But behind this, there still remain grudges in his heart.

Unfortunately, behind the success of the business, the father went the way of all flesh and

died because of severe heart disease. The town people sympathized to those left. There at his

bedside, the older brother made plans for a proper funeral and busy preparing and arranging matters

for his father¶s burial.

The younger sibling sat on the edge of the bed and held his father¶s hand.

³I will be forever grateful for your unending love for me, father. Thank you for accepting me despite

all the bad things I have done. I am grateful to have you. I love you so much Dad,´the younger son

said with tears falling through his cheeks. The younger son would never forget the day his father

Prologue:

One of the renowned stories in the Bible is about the profuse son who left his

brother and father just to go in a far place and waste there his substance with riotousliving. At the time the younger son left, the father grieved and lamented and all he

desired is that his son would come back home. It seemed that all he has was gone

from that moment and he doesn¶t mind the things and the people around him. He

doesn¶t know that his elder son feels sad not for the absence of the younger son but

for his presence that the father couldn¶t recognize.

came running to meet his broken-down boy and welcome him home. Much to the elder¶s son

chagrin, the younger brother actually soiled his father¶s memory by retelling that embarrassing story

at the funeral²complete with a joke about the look on the fatted calf¶s face that had all the mourners

actually laughing. All but one, that is.

Now full in-charge of the family estate and business was the senior son.The newly-acclaimed

boss announced that there would soon be some changes in the way things were run. ³Structure,

order, compliance and efficiency are the new orders of the day,´ he said with a firm voice.

Having no assets of his own, the once prodigal was presented with a work contract,

complete with generous performance incentives. After all, the new boss reasoned, ³Father would

want me to see to it that you are cared for. I am giving you the chance but I know you¶ll just

squander it at all. And I will be veryhappy to witness for that day to come.´

Also in contract were some clearly-detailed outlines of the consequences should the prodigal

son ever fail to perform up to the agreed-upon standard or should he ever, even in his off-time,

return to the faraway lands. Not only would he be terminated for his current performance, he would

also be fined and punished for all his previous lost offenses as well.

Over time, people marvelled at the vast expanse of the family business due to the elder

brother¶s business acumen. New technologies, clear structures, efficient manufacturing and

distribution methods, close supervision and a zero-tolerance policy for code violations made thefamily business the envy of the marketplace and the fear of the other competitors.

But occasionally, his friends and his family could see some of those old streaks of self-will-

run-riot in him. The people around became aware on µthe other side¶ attitude of the elder son. Little

by little, they noticed his cruelty coming out of its shell.

Still, the elder son lived with an angry ache in his soul. The one thing he yearned for and

never seemed to attain is the hearts of the people in the family. Even his own children seemed to

love their fun-loving uncle at times more than their own father.

³Why am I not loved by my children? What does my brother have that I do not possess? I am

now very rich but still the people I love do not recognize me. Why?´ the senior son asked himself so

envious.

After sometime, the family boss got exactly what he had been waiting for. In a season of

restless carefulness, the popular prodigal son violated the terms of the contract. Despite his

remorse, the boss made it clear²there were no exceptions to the written policies²even for family.

There would be no fatted calf and certainly no party. There would be a detailed listing of all the

younger son¶s offenses for all time and the corresponding penalties thereof.

Though it was hard to leave, the younger son left their business, his family and his brother

without saying any word of departure. He went away as a consequence of the violation he has made

and for him to escape from his brother who is void with compassion.

One morning, an employee went to the senior son¶s office to submit the work the boss has

commanded her to do.

³Good morning sir. Here are the papers of the proposed project. I have brought this for final

evaluation,´ the employee said.

Seeing every detail of the documents, the boss felt repelled by what he has read. With a

fierce voice he said, ³Dina, come here. I told you not to include these entries. Do you think that our

clients will be encouraged to invest in the company if this is what they see? Are you not thinking?

Change all of these. I want to see them the soonest possible time. Understood? Go.´

This is just but one of the many situations inside the company. Almost all workers: executivechairs down to utility personnel cannot escape from the head¶s cruelty. It seems like no one

impresses him. The employees felt like their efforts are not recognized and appreciated by their

boss.

The company¶s productivity has lie-lowed. Its gradual fall has bolted from the blue not only to

the boss but also to the town people. Nobody expected this to happen for they know it is managed

by a competent business head. The truth is, its declineresulted from the successive resigning of the

assets of the company- the workers. They could no longer take the nasty and inhumane actions of

their boss.

One late evening, the elder son went home wearisome. He went straight to his bedroom and

has seen his wife and children in a deep sleep. His wife was awakened by his arrival and semi-

conscious she asked, ³Hon, is there any problem? I have noticed these days you were so

problematic. What¶s wrong?´

³I just felt disgusted by the performance and attitude of my employees. They do not follow my

orders. Damn them all. Some of them resigned already. But I don¶t care. I don¶t need them anyway. I

can do it on my own,´ he answered arrogantly.

His wife immediately retorted, ³But why? How will you able to accomplish tasks withoutthem? Do you not know they are the livewires of the company? And even your brother is not with the

business right now. ´

³And even you, you favour them? Then join them. Stay away from me if you can¶t resist.

Leave me alone. Who are you to talk to me that way? You¶re only my wife not my adviser,´ he

reacted with a raised voice.

The man woke up seeing none of his wife and children at their room. He looked for their

presence and had not seen any shadow of them.

The elder son lives alone now. All that he had before was gone. He had no more business.

No more family to join him in his strife. He has noone to run to but his own self.

Days pass by and the elder son decided to visit his father¶s mausoleum. With a forlorn tone

he asked, ³Father, I am coming back to you. Tell mewhy is this happening? I lost our business and

my family. What must I do? Please help me Dad.´

Then a soft voice said, ³Son, the answer is within your reach. You cannot and will not live by

yourself. You need others in your struggle. You need to value the people in your life. But first you

need to take away the grudges which reside in your heart. Go back and find your younger brother

and your family. Find them and ask repentance.´
