Honoring the Life of Keri Rose

In hopes of honoring the life of beloved friend and English teacher Keri Rose, who passed away this past year, we would like to construct an outdoor area with a small bench and a poetry post (http://poetrypostspdx.com/), so that others can share in her love of nature and literature. If you have construction skills, or would like to make a donation to help fund this project, please contact Cleveland teacher Stefanie Goldbloom ([email protected]).

The CHS PTA publishes this newsletter each month. The deadline for the next issue of SPOTLIGHT is October 24, 2014, for the November issue. For information or questions regarding the content of this newsletter, please contact

THE SCRIBE TRIBE WANTS YOU to volunteer with S.C.R.I.B.E. [Students of Cleveland wRIting Better Everyday]

(yes, it should be SWIBE, but that sounds like a writing group for Mr. Magoo)

We are seeking people who enjoy reading student writing and offering thoughtful feedback on the content. The SCRIBE volunteer reads works-in-process, not final drafts, and gives feedback and suggestions to improve the creative or persuasive writing. You will not assign a grade nor do you need to be an expert in grammar or conventions. Volunteers will receive comprehensive training (at CHS) before responding to papers, which you can do from the comfort of your home. Check the Cleveland eNews for training dates. Read more about the program at http://clevelandscribe.weebly.com. If this sounds like a volunteer project for you, please contact Vanessa Hughes (CHS English teacher) at [email protected].

From the Cleveland PTA Desk

Welcome back, everyone! I hope that the school year so far has been an exciting and successful adventure for your students and for you. Cleveland High School is a wonderful and supportive place to explore and learn. Our teachers and administrators work wonders to provide the best possible educational environment for our students.

Supporting them in these efforts is a key role of the PTA. Each year we provide several thousand dollars in support for our students, teachers and programs. This month, teachers will submit grant requests to the PTA for a wide variety of materials, programs and activities to enhance the student experience. We will award around $7,000 in grants at our October PTA meeting. This support means a great deal to our teachers, and can make the difference between an adequate class experience and an outstanding one.

But... we cannot do it alone! A good portion of our revenue comes from individual PTA memberships. If you haven’t already joined the PTA then please, consider supporting our students with a $20 PTA membership. Your membership will make you a voting member at our monthly PTA meetings (6:00 pm on the third Thursday every month except December) and will give you the warm feeling of knowing you are part of the solution.

You can sign up at school, through the link on the Cleveland website, or directly at the Oregon PTA site: http:// www.oregonpta.org/Member/member.htm

Thank you so much for all you do for your student(s)—we look forward to having you in the Cleveland PTA community.

International Baccalaureate (IB) News

How to prepare for IB: Advice to the Academy

Freshmen interested in the IB program are strongly encouraged to maintain high grades and engagement in their courses year-round. Honors contracts can offer extensions that build on pre-IB skills and experiences and encourage global and community awareness. The first year of high school is also a great time to make personal organization and time management a priority. Balancing time between a consistent study schedule and participation in extracurricular activities is the recipe for success.

Thinking about full IB Diploma? 2-year Planning for sophomores is here! Sophomores interested in learning more about the IB Diploma and creating an individual two-year IB plan for their junior and senior years are invited to schedule an appointment with Jennifer Wiandt, IB Coordinator, during the months of October, November and December. Appointments may be scheduled in the SSC or by contacting Jennifer directly at [email protected] or 503-916-5120 x75030.

IB Exam Registration for 2014-2015 Students and parents are invited to learn more about the IB assessment process on Tuesday evening, September 23 in the CHS Auditorium at 7 pm. This meeting will cover the nature of the assessment process, the potential benefits of participation, and the registration process and fees. Registration forms will be available both at the meeting and following the meeting in the SSC (226) and IB Office (230), and online at: http://www.pps.k12.or.us/schools/cleveland/305.htm following the meeting. The registration deadline is November 4, 2014. Students qualifying for free and reduced lunch benefits are funded through state and federal grants and will not pay fees for IB exams. Please email or call Jennifer Wiandt in the IB office with questions: [email protected] or 503-916-5120 x75030. Juniors and seniors enrolled in the second year of any IB Course; or the first year of IB Biology, IB Chemistry, IB Environmental Systems and Societies, IB Mathematics, IB Math Studies, IB Music, IB Psychology, IB Social and Cultural Anthropology, or an IB World Language are eligible to register for IB exams. Please note that students in the first year of IB Art, IB History, IB Literature, IB Physics, or IB Theater are not eligible for registration until the second year of study.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR PSAT: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 The PSAT for will be held for sophomores and pre-registered juniors during the school day on

Wednesday, October 15 The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT and is also used to qualify high-scoring juniors for the National Merit Scholarship competition. Taking this test during the junior year is the only way a student can potentially qualify for the National Merit Scholarship competition. Taking the PSAT during the sophomore year, while good practice, does not qualify a student for National Merit consideration.

The only opportunity to take the PSAT will be on Wednesday, October 15 during the school day. All juniors are encouraged to take the test. The cost is $20; the deadline for registering is Friday September 19. Juniors register and pay in the CHS Business Office and receive the PSAT guidebook at that time. Checks should be made out to CHS. The State of Oregon pays for all sophomores to take the PSAT. Sophomores do not need to register ahead of time. The PSAT will be administered at CHS on the morning of October 15. Details on the schedule will be announced later. For questions, contact CHS Special Events Coordinator Jan Watt, 503-916-5120.

News: Film & Lit Classes

Alex Gordin's three Film and Lit. classes will attend the Northwest Film Institute, during the morning of October 14, to view the Iranian film "Reach for the Stars." Following the film there will be a q and a with artists of the film. Following this event, students will visit PSU or the Art Museum. The event is sponsored by Chipotle.

PTA Scrip Program

We are very excited to announce that the 3rd year of PTA Scrip sales have begun and already sales are brisk! What is “scrip” you might ask? Scrip is simply another name for gift card. The Scrip program is a PTA fundraiser that raises money for the teacher classroom grant program; a program where teachers can apply for funds to purchase classroom essentials or enhancements that are no longer supported by the District. We offer gift cards to participating retailers and the retailer returns a percentage of the Scrip purchase back to the school, usually between 4-20%, which becomes our profit. You don’t pay anything extra, $50 of Fred Meyer scrip buys you $50 of Fred Meyer products. Scrip cards never expire per Oregon state law and any card balance left after your purchase remains on the card for other purchases. Almost 150 retailers participate in the Scrip program, many of which are national retailers, which make Scrip cards excellent gifts. The program includes all the local grocery stores, clothing retailers, outdoor stores, movies tickets, book stores and numerous local restaurants to name a few. Many retailers offer $5 and $10 cards that make great “thank you” gifts, too. To place an order, print off the Scrip personal order form available at the Scrip section of the eNews and complete and return to the school main office with cash or a check made payable to “CHS PTA.” You can pre-order Scrip as needed, or purchase it on-the-go from the Scrip team which sells Scrip outside of the Cleveland office on Tuesday mornings between 7:30 and 8:30. Orders received on Tuesdays by 8:30 a.m. are filled and available by noon on Friday. If neither purchase option works for you, but you’d still like to place an order, or would like a copy of the order form sent to you, contact Sue Shattuc at [email protected].

PRINCETON REVIEW (PRA) ASSESSMENT OFFERED BY CCC

SAT/ACT practice test for juniors will be held on Monday, November 10

In partnership with The Princeton Review, the CCC is once again offering an opportunity for CHS juniors to take a free Princeton Review Assessment (PRA) to expose them to both the SAT and ACT. The PRA is a good way for students to find out whether they would score higher on the SAT or ACT. The PRA contains sections of both types of tests. Four weeks after taking the PRA, students receive their scores from Princeton Review in a “scores back” session, held in the evening and open to both students and their parents, During the “scores back” session, Princeton Review personnel explain the fundamental differences between the SAT and the ACT and share valuable strategies and tips with the students that will help them when they take the actual tests later in the year. The PRA is offered at no cost to the student, and taking it does not constitute a hidden commitment to The Princeton Review to use their services in the future. The PRA will be given at CHS on Monday, November 10, at 8 am (a teacher planning day). The “scores back” strategy session will be held at CHS on Monday December 8 at 7 pm. Students MUST SIGN UP AHEAD OF TIME to take the PRA. Students may sign up in the CCC starting the week of September 22. Sign up is on a first come first served basis, and is limited to 75 juniors. A second PRA will be offered at the end of January; this session will be open to sophomores as well as juniors. More information about the January PRA will appear in upcoming issues of both the CHS eNews and Spotlight.

College 3 by 5: Three Things about Five Colleges Direct-Entry Nursing Programs

If your son or daughter is thinking about a nursing career, s/he has probably heard about the wide variety of paths to becoming a Registered Nurse. There is a two-year path available at Oregon community colleges and four-year programs that lead to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The BSN is a widely accepted standard for nurses and offers great flexibility for employment and advancement in the field of nursing. Some colleges and universities require two years of undergraduate education and then students apply to the nursing program for their last two years of college, earning the BSN in four years. Some colleges and universities offer direct admission into the nursing program so that incoming freshmen begin the path to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing right away and also complete the degree in four years, ready to take licensing exams. Here are five colleges that admit freshmen directly into their nursing schools. Azuza Pacific University, Azuza, CA http://www.apu.edu

• APU”s School of Nursing offers an Honors Program • Nursing training utilizes a Christian worldview to integrate values, beliefs, and ethics in patient care • International exchanges allow nursing students to participate in international health care settings via short-term missions or

a semester abroad

Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH http://fpb.case.edu/

• Students at all levels can participate in research projects with nursing faculty • Nursing school students participate in a partnership with the World Health Organization by completing courses of study

or clinical and service learning projects abroad • Case Western Reserve's location at University Circle comprises four medical centers for nursing training as well as home

to the Cleveland Orchestra, Botanical Gardens, and the Cleveland Art Museum

Carroll College, Helena, MT http://www.carroll.edu

• The Holistic Health Lab and Learning Center teaches holistic healing modalities for self-care and wellness • Clinical training begins with 200-level courses in Helena's hospitals, public health, assisted living, long-term care,

psychiatric and school settings • Army ROTC Nursing Scholarships are available and cover 100% of tuition and fees

Dominican University of California, San Rafael, CA http://www.dominican.edu

• Nursing students will complete 1200 hours of clinical training in the Bay Area in four years • all nursing students benefit from training in clinical decision-making in the Nursing Simulation Lab with computerized

manequins • Nursing students also participate in Dominican's vibrant and diverse student body of 2,300 students (one-third of which

study health professions) and Division II sports

Xavier University, Cincinnati, OH http://www.xavier.edu

• The Hispanic Focus is an elective course of study within the four-year nursing program intended to promote understanding of and nursing practice within the Hispanic community

• The Clinical Nurse Leader Honors program enables participants to complete a Master of Science in Nursing in one additional year and one additional practicum experience

• The nursing program provides mentoring for all students from within Xavier University's alumni

Hundreds of direct-admit nursing programs in the United States are listed on the website of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing website at http://www.aacn.nche.edu. Direct-admit nursing programs in the Pacific Northwest include George Fox University, Gonzaga University, Linfield College, University of Portland, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, and Seattle University. Be sure to check each college's admission requirements, since admission standards usually include a high school transcript showing successful completion of higher-level science and math courses.

NEWS FROM THE STUDENT SERVICES CENTER (SSC)

Greetings to all CHS families from the SSC! Everyone in the Cleveland counseling office is excited about the new school year. Watch this column in each month’s issue of the Spotlight for news and information relating to college, academic planning, and other support services for parents and students. We want to encourage parents/guardians to call us with questions and concerns, or just to check in. We are here to help!

Junior and Senior Parents

The 2014 NACAC National College Fair

The annual NACAC (National Association of College Admissions Counselors) College Fair is coming to Portland on Sunday, November 2nd and Monday, November 3rd. The fair will take place at the Oregon Convention Center and run from 1 – 5 pm on Sunday and 9 – noon on Monday. Representatives from over 250 colleges and universities will be in attendance. Parents and students are invited to this free event which is a terrific opportunity to visit with college admissions representatives, get information and brochures, and ask questions about schools throughout the country and abroad. There are also special sessions on admission requirements, financial aid, testing, and college majors.

College Admissions Representative Visits to CHS

Throughout September and October, CHS hosts admissions representatives from many universities throughout the US, including representatives from Ivy League schools, small liberal arts colleges, and the Oregon state universities. These visits are an excellent opportunity for your student to meet with these representatives personally, ask questions about their schools, and help the admissions reps put a name to a face when they are reading applications. The visit schedule is posted on Naviance, and in the CCC (Career and College Center) and students can sign up to attend a session on their Naviance account.

Senior Parents

Seniors and College

In September, counselors will visit all senior English classes to discuss college and post-high school planning and to discuss the college application procedures for this year. By October, seniors should have selected the college(s) they will apply to, and have begun their application process. Any senior planning to attend a

(continued)

2

four-year college who has not yet taken the SAT or ACT should do so ASAP. Check test dates and register online:

SAT— https://www.collegeboard.org ACT— http://www.actstudent.org

Seniors and Naviance

Naviance is a program designed to aid the college planning and application process. Students can search for colleges and link directly to their websites, compare colleges, access the College Rep Visit schedule, check out admissions data from past Cleveland students, search for scholarships, receive emails from their counselors and much more! Parents can access Naviance through their own student’s login or contact the CCC to create their own password.

Naviance is REQUIRED for all CHS seniors in their college application process. Counselors will be sending application materials including: transcripts, recommendation letters and school report forms through Naviance. Students must order transcripts through Naviance, as well.

Oregon University System Admissions Requirements

The Oregon University System states that a C- is the minimum grade a student must earn in order for an approved college preparatory course to be counted as meeting the OUS subject area requirement for admission. This means that a student with a D in a core class (English, History, Science, Foreign Language, Math) does not meet admissions requirements, even if he/she has the required minimum GPA. The university will review all applicants who don’t meet these requirements and determine eligibility on a case by case basis. Our recommendation is to make up a D by going to summer school or night school, or by retaking the course online. Students should see their counselor first before signing up for a make-up course.

NCAA ALERT

NCAA will not accept BYU Online courses or any other online course on transcripts if a student plans to participate in any Division I, Division II, or NAIA sports. Questions? Contact NCAA.
