Sandra arrived in Canada in June of 2008 and spent a year looking for employment in Peterborough. With limited English proficiency and no Canadian work experience, finding an employer to consider her credentials did not happen quickly. As the employment counsellor at the New Canadians Centre, I met Sandra in June of 2009. At the same time, I approached Eric Monkman of Monkman Gracie & Johnston Insurance Brokers and suggested a mentoring program opportunity that brings foreign-trained professionals and established professionals together in occupation-specific mentoring relationships. Collaborating with Eric, we developed a short-term voluntary work placement, designed to provide Canadian work experience for a foreign-trained professional. Three candidates were chosen for an interview. Sandra was selected.

Within two months, MG&J requested to hire Sandra on a full-time basis. Two months was enough time to showcase Sandra’s rich organizational skills, her attention to detail, and her wealth of knowledge from her education and work experience in Ecuador.

This is the work of the Workplace Integration Centre; connecting talented foreign-trained professionals and Peterborough employers. Building on the success that collaborative efforts with employers can bring, the Workplace Integration Centre will:

• Provide employers and foreign-trained professionals with appropriate tools and resources to aid in immigration, accreditation, and licensing issues.

• Increase awareness and capacity for employers to attract, hire, and retain foreign-trained professionals.

• Help foreign-trained professionals achieve their career goals through meaningful employment.

• Assist employers with creating a culture of inclusion within the workplace.

The official launch of the Workplace Integration Centre will take place at 10:00 AM on September 22nd, 2010 at the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce. DIGITSmatter10 Digit Dialing is Coming to Our Area

oBetween January 15th and March 5th if you make a 7 digit phone call, a Bell reminder message will be heard before the call is put through. After March 5th a 7 digit phone call will not be completed.

This change is being made to accommodate more phone numbers, in the form of a new area code. As of March 19th, 2011 area code 249 will be added to the existing 705 area.

This change will affect businesses in many different ways. In addition to normal phone calls becoming 10 digits, if they are not already 10 digits, the following will have to be reprogrammed before January 15th, 2011:

• Phone system speed dialing

• Fax machines

• Computer modems

• Cell phones

• Security systems

• Medical alarms

• Any auto dial systems

• Elevator phones

• Telephone type intercom systems

The 10 digit deadline, for the equipment mentioned above, is actually January 15th and not March 5th. These are machines, and after January 15th, the automated Bell Canada reminder message will stop

any 7 digit automated calls from being completed.

The Bell Canada network is now able to accept 10 digit dialing. It would be a good idea to make these dialing changes now rather than rushing at the last minute.

Cameron Taylor of BOATsmart! emphasized to us the importance to always use common sense, “leave your beer on the peer” and to always wear a life jacket while boating. He spoke to us of ways to prevent accidents while out on the water. He talked about the new guidelines and upgraded testing coming in the fall. Mayor Paul Ayotte was our guest speaker this month. His main presentation was on the infrastructure taking place in our area to the sum of $51 million. One of those projects mentioned was the Hunter Street Bridge. The Peterborough Airport is taking up the biggest portion of it at $28 million. He updated us on the poverty committee’s work and said that there will be an appeal for business to help out in providing a solution. There were 43 in attendance today, great turnout.

Club Laurus Young Professional’s Group welcomed over 80 attendees at June’s Open House & Showcase event. The event was hosted by the Historic Red Dog and held to recruit new young professionals within the Peterborough community.

News from the OCC

Accessibility Works is a new initiative of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) with support and funding from the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario. The OCC will work collaboratively with the Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade to help businesses in Ontario become aware of, and comply with, the Customer Service Standard. It is the first standard developed under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). Other accessibility standards are being developed in areas including transportation, information and communications, employment and built environment.

The Accessibility Standards for Customer Service applies to all people, businesses and organizations that: provide goods or services either directly

to the public or to other businesses or organizations and have one or more employees in Ontario. Organizations in the private sector, including non-profit, must comply by January 1st, 2012.

Key activities of the project will include:

• web-based information and an online training module designed specifically to help business implement and comply with the Customer Service Standard;

• facilitators information kit to help the OCC’s 160 affiliated local Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade disseminate information to their corporate members; and

• up to 40 information sessions held with local Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade.

AccessibilityWorks.ca will be launched in the fall of 2010. The website will offer free resources and tools to help businesses create a more accessible Ontario. For more information about the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act visit: AccessOn.ca

In a matter of seconds, an accident can drastically change a life and if that accident happens to one of your employees your Chambers Plan can offer support.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) is a benefit that offers a lump sum payment in the event of death, loss of limb, or any qualified injury resulting from an accident. Benefits are paid out in addition to other types of coverage, so in the event of loss of limb for instance, an insured might receive disability payments as well as an AD&D payment. In the case of an accidental death, an insured’s beneficiary would receive the traditional group life insurance benefit as well as a second, equal amount through the AD& D coverage.

When a serious injury occurs, an employee will likely face many challenges as they recuperate. To help recovery, the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan AD&D benefit will cover up to $15,000 of expenses for your occupational training. And up to an additional $5,000 is available if special adaptive equipment or workplace modifications are required for the injured employee.

Together these payments can form the foundation of a program to help the employee re-enter the workplace after an accident.

But AD&D benefits aren’t limited to the workplace. Recognizing that an injury can affect how the individual interacts with his or her surroundings, there is a benefit that will pay up to $50,000 to modify a home or vehicle, when a wheelchair becomes necessary as a result of an accident. This money can be used to offset the cost of projects like ramp installation, changes to the layout of the house, and vehicle control modification.

With the Chamber’s Plan, AD&D benefits are extensive and included in every benefit package. It is an often overlooked benefit, but can provide vital support at a critical time.
