Monsoon

In the monsoons, coastal Maharashtra revelsin lush greenery. Flora abounds with anobscene fluorescence. Every local hill boastsa multitude of waterfalls cascading in alltheir effervescent glory. Even the concretejungle of the Mumbai Metropolis, unable todeter the onslaught of greenery, lies deckedwith festoons of moss, garishly leavedbranches and a confetti of a permanentdrizzle. Within homes, tea is consumed inclattering china cups, steam waftingupwards before becoming with the lightmorning mist. Dark mornings loom with thepromise of collapsing infrastructure andpowerless nights, sweaty in their embracewith the promise of love and lust.

Aparna imagined all of this, envisioned as arich tapestry of colours. A screen overheaddisplayed a map with a diagrammaticaeroplane flying in a wide arc over Iran. 47dashes to Mumbai, Aparna, stirring awake,counted on the map. A few hours later, justbefore the flight’s rocky monsoonal descentinto Mumbai, Aparna craned her neck to getthat first elusive view of Mumbai from theair. She spied sheets of gossamer threadsmoving in symmetric waves and spotted farbelow a sequence of yellow lights.Landmark after landmark, she postulatedincorrectly and the aeroplane made a finallunge piercing through a pregnant cloud,looming overhead flimsy slums and

with a mighty heave as a collective sigh leftthe passengers.

Sadly, Aparna was disappointed with herimagination, or rather with the fecundity ofit. Life was undoubtedly the picture perfectmonsoon she imagined, it also co existedwith pools of fetid slush, never endinghumidity (and besides, sweat ceased to besexy immediately after lust was satiated)and damp corners and clothes that weresomehow never completely dry. Distanceromanticizes, she concluded. Even thepeople around her seemed somehow moreintense in their flaws, and muted in theirmunificences. Moss however pretty didbeget slime, cracked walls and madehumans slip. And fall.

Early Winter

December was undoubtedly the best timeto visit Tamil Nadu. It was merely hot,unencumbered by its nastier superlatives,dawn and dusk were actually pleasant andthen there was the music. Setting out fromChennai, the very atmosphere exudedmellowness. The normally fierce sun shonebenign, the sea waves lapped softly, thedelicate sea breeze was only broken by theclang of a distant temple bell. Aparna’sparents set out to appease multiple Gods,three planets and in the process enrich afew corpulent priests.

into the cold always left her flustered nomatter how used to she was to it. Shereveled in the crispness of the cold air andconfidently crunched snow with her boots,always sure of her step.

She felt more comfortable with everyincreasing mile and eventually risked it toget off the freeway and step onto a countryroad. The small road had not been saltedand earlier vehicles had left deep ruts in thepacked snow. Slowly she inched acrosspassing by a frozen expanse that passed offas a lake in the summer. The bright whiteground contrasted with the blue sky, withthe occasional scrawny branch bringing inbrowns. The ruts slowly disappeared withthe advent of a light snowfall and withinminutes, Aparna was relying on blindinstinct as she fought to stay on the road. Atlength, she stopped knowing that she waslost. To her credit, she only panicked aftershe discovered her cell phone wasn’treachable in this wilderness. Shedesperately tried to reposition herself usingher practiced geography but finally gave up,parked her car and began trudging backwhen it hit her. With a slow dread thatturned her bowels to water, she realized shehad driven off right onto the frozen lake.She half ran, then went back, retrieved hercabin luggage alone and made the mostarduous walk of her life, over ice and snowtowards the nearest tree. Her fingers hadalmost frozen over her phone keypad,poised to hit 911.

Later she warmed her hands, consideringherself terribly lucky to have escaped. Whileher computer whirred to life, she thought ofwriting up the incident and posting it onfacebook, then decided against it. Shesettled down, logged onto gmail as hercontacts flashed by, some green (available),some red (busy) and some orange (away).The screen showed a cluster of unreadmails, and someone pinged her. Aparnafinally felt at home.

They travelled in a rented Ambassador, thesymbol of a solid, accident proof India alonga circuitous route all over Thanjavur district(the old district as Aparna’s fathercontinually reminded her). Every townseemed to look the same; a tangle of wiresdangling overhead, buildings looming overa narrow central street, a mammoth tample‘gopuram’ suddenly rising into view. Anddespite this unerring familiarity, everytemple was different. Well, of course, theywere different; what Aparna felt, or what shethought she felt was the soul of eachtemple. Despite the neck craning and subtlepushing to get a good view of divinity andthe hurried giving away of a 100 rupee notefor a few more seconds of gazing into a darkstatue, despite the rotten bananas andcomforting smell of camphor.

They camped overnight at an ancientrelative's place in a village near Kariakal. Inthe evening as they ate by falling light,someone sang an apt Kalyani from withinthe dark confines of the house and the sunleft with a final bright orange ray with birdsflying over. Sadly for our city bred, foreignreturned Aparna, this postcardness was notto continue for long. The next morning sawher aghast at the thought of deposing herbodily wastes in a field with an old dalda canfilled with dubious brackish water. When shefinally did finish her task and rose, sherealized with a creeping horror someonehad been spying upon her. Disgusted andfrustrated, she made her way home as a pigbroke into a run and happily gorged on therecently departed contents of her bowels.

LateWinter

January, however, is undoubtedly not thebest time to visit any part of Northern USA.Airports, with their propensity to insulateone from the outside world, don’t helpmatters much. After perfunctory procedures,Aparna squinted at the bright sunlight and aminute later frowned deeply, many linesetching her dark face. This sudden induction
