President's Corner
August is soon to be a memory. In most cases, August is a good-for-nothing month.
January has New Years; February is a biggie with lots of President's days and Valentine's
Day; March has St. Patrick's day (and our St. Patrick's Dinner) and the first day of
Spring; April has Easter; May celebrates Mother's Day and Memorial Day; June has
Father's Day and the first day of Summer; July celebrates Independence Day; September
has the first day of Autumn and Labor Day and, of course, our 9/11 Commemorative
Dinner; October has Columbus Day and Halloween, November has Veteran's Day and
Thanksgiving; and December finishes off the year with Pearl Harbor Day, the first day
of Winter, Christmas, and New Year's Eve. Then there's August! Nothing? Well, not
for SNRW.
In August, our State Senator, James Settelmeyer was named one of eight legislators of
the year by the American Legislative Exchange. We have always known that he was the
best, but it is nice when others recognize what a prize he is. The award was given to
those legislators who have demonstrated a dedication to the council's principles of
limited government, federalism, and free market. Well deserved, James!
Congratulations.
Our speaker at the August meeting was Lieutenant Governor Brian Krolicki. He regaled
us with stories of family life for a politician, highlighted some of the issues with which
the State is dealing, answered questions regarding the potential future for Winter
Olympics here in Nevada, the preparation for Nevada's sesquicentennial celebrations,
discussed his political future since he is "termed out" (again) of his office. He reminded
members that he and his wife are very proud members of Sierra Nevada Republican
Women. Although he was given a limited time to talk during our meeting, it was
obvious that our members wanted more and cornered him after the meeting for another
30 minutes of discussion. Thank you, Brian, so much for making another meeting of
SNRW so special.
Our 9/11 Dinner is just around the corner. Hopefully you all have your reservations
made. We hope you once again enjoy this commemorative event and remember that
SNRW is making sure that "We Shall Never Forget."
As the year starts winding down, you may be asked to accept a position on the Board. I
urge you, if asked, to please consider saying "yes." It is most rewarding to serve on the
Board and a wonderful way to participate in our local and State, government.
Happy Autumn!
Nancy Jarvis
2013 SNRW President

IN MEMORY – Of all that died on 911 and the citizens and military who have been
defending our Country since that horrible attack.
SNRW’s first 911 Commemorative Dinner was held on September 12th, 2001, and
the club has continued to hold the event each September.
The September 11 attacks were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks
launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New
York City and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area on Tuesday, September 11,
2001.
Four passenger airliners were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists so they could be
flown into buildings in suicide attacks. Two of those planes, American Airlines
Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South
towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. Within
two hours, both towers collapsed with debris and the resulting fires causing partial
or complete collapse of all other buildings in the WTC complex, as well as major
damage to ten other large surrounding structures. A third plane, American Airlines
Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the United States
Department of Defense), leading to a partial collapse in its western side. The fourth
plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at Washington, D.C., but crashed into
a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after its passengers tried to overcome the
hijackers. In total, almost 3,000 people died in the attacks, including the 227 civil-
ians and 19 hijackers aboard the four planes. It also was the deadliest incident for
firefighters in the history of the United States.
Suspicion quickly fell on al-Qaeda. Although the group's leader, Osama bin Laden,
initially denied any involvement, in 2004 he claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Al-Qaeda and bin Laden cited U.S. support of Israel, the presence of U.S. troops in
Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq as motives for the attacks.
The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror and invading
Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, which had harbored al-Qaeda. Many countries
strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded law enforcement powers.
Having evaded capture for years, bin Laden was located and killed by U.S. forces in
May 2011.
The destruction of the Twin Towers and other properties caused serious damage to the
economy of Lower Manhattan and had a significant effect on global markets. Cleanup
of the World Trade Center site was completed in May 2002, and the Pentagon was
repaired within a year. Numerous memorials have been constructed, including
theNational September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York, the Pentagon Memorial,
and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Pennsylvania. After a lengthy delay, the 1,776-
foot-tall (541 m) One World Trade Center was completed at the World Trade Center site
in New York City in 2013.
The National September 11 Memorial Museum will serve as the country’s principal
institution for examining the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact
of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11, 2001.
The Museum’s 110,000 square feet
of exhibition space will be located
within the archaeological heart of
the World Trade Center site—
telling the story of 9/11 through
multimedia displays archives,
narratives and a collection of
monumental and authentic
artifacts.
The lives of every victim of the 2001 and 1993 attacks will be commemorated as
visitors have the opportunity to learn about the men, women, and children who died.
The monumental artifacts of the Museum provide a link to the events of 9/11, while
presenting intimate stories of loss, compassion, reckoning, and recovery that are central
to telling the story of the attacks and the aftermath.

Recommended Reading, the Constitution Committee
Judy Jacobs, former SNRW member and board member,
has some salient reading recommendations set for
below. “Topaz Judy” as she is also know by many of us
gave her permission to forward her e-mail message in
this column, and we are glad to do so:
“Mark Levin's new book, The Liberty Amendments came out none too soon. Washington, i.e. Congress, the President, and the Supremes, is running rampant over us, the people and our states. Mark Meckler, J.D., President of Citizens for Self-Governance, and Michael Farris, J.D., LL.M, senior Fellow for Constitutional Studies, have put together an organization and a handbook to get the ball rolling for promoting constitutional amendments returning states' rights as addressed under Article V. Find out more at: ConventionoftheStates.com. Volunteers to pressure our state legislature are needed. I've downloaded a copy of the handbook. It's 14 pages. You can get it online, too. Levin's book is at Costco for $15.49.” Do not hesitate to make reading recommendations. It is privilege of the Constitution
Committee to pass them along.
