NOTICES

TEA ROSTER: Many thanks to Warleiti Jap, Judith Barry and Lee Payne, who are our volunteers for the September meeting. Additional savoury & sweet treats for the supper table are always welcome.

NEW MEMBER: Please welcome Susie Butler our newest member. Say “Hi,” and make her feel at home.

GUEST SPEAKER: Amy Jacobson is an orchid hobbyist and American Orchid Society (AOS) Judge living in Northern California. Her main interest is in Laeliinae particularly Laelia anceps, Cattleya purpurata and Cattleya intermedia, all of which are quite at home in the coastal suburbs of Sydney. This promises to be a very interesting presentation giving an American perspective on these popular orchids. Amy and her Cymbidium growing husband, Ken have gained many AOS and CSA awards and also won the prestigious “Best Orchid in Show” and the “Best Cattleya Alliance” awards at the Santa Barbara International Show in 2008 and the AOS Berliner Award for the best Lycaste in 2009. Amy’s presentation will include the different varieties of Cattleya purpurata including a trip to Brazil to see wild ones in situ.

PLACED BENCHED ORCHIDS NAMES

The following are corrections and changes in accepted names etc. (Not changed in results listing):

Geoff & Jean Fulcher; the accepted name for your Lycaste Aquila is Lycamerlycaste (Lmc) Aquila,

Geoff & Jean Fulcher; your Epi Ruge Magic does not appear on the RHS Hybrid Register,

Garrie & Lesley Bromley; the accepted genus & name for your Epi Rene Marquis is Epicattleya (Epc) René Marqués,

Garrie & Lesley Bromley; the accepted name for your Calanthe tokunoshimensis is now Calanthe discolor var. discolor,

Cary Polis; the accepted name for your Maxillaria porphyrostele is now Brasiliorchis porphyrostele,

Judy & Reiner Schneidereit; the new name for your Den. dolicophyllum x teretifolium is Den. (Dendrobium) Anthedon Splendour and was registered by G Dimos of South Australia in 2012,.

Nick Gill; the new name for your Cym. Memoria Amelia Earhart x Last Tango is Cym. (Cymbidium) Last Flight and was registered by Royale Orchids in 2011,

Gloria & Allan Cushway; the new name for your Rlc. Hawaiian Princess x Sylvia Fry is Rlc. (Rhyncholaeliocattleya) Kesthin’s Esther and was registered by Aranbeem Orchids in 2001,

Chris Nidigal; the correct name for your Pleurothallis secundum is Pleurothallis secunda,

Chris Nidigal; the accepted name for your Lycaste skinneri is now Lycaste virginalis,

Chris Nidigal; the accepted name for your Maxillaria densa is now Camaridium densum,

Chris Nidigal; the correct name for your Pleione formosa is Pleione formosana,

Bryce Barton; the accepted name for your Aeridovanda Permaisuri is Aeridovanda Permaisuri Bainun,

Christine Rethers; the new name for your Paph. sukhakulii x Maudiae is Paph. (Paphiopedilum) Makuli, and

Trish Peterson; neither of the parents of your hybrid Den. Australian Rhubarb Sensation x Den. Herberton Gold appear to have been registered. There is a Dendrobium Australian Rhubarb Pie registered in 2007 by Australian Orchid Nurseries of Tyabb Victoria. The only reference found to Dendrobium Herberton Gold is Dendrobium speciosum var. pedunculatum ‘Herberton Gold’. Could it possibly be that your hybrid is Den. Australian Rhubarb Pie x Den. speciosum var. pedunculatum ‘Herberton Gold’. If this is so, then your plant is probably Dendrobium Speckles Sunset registered in 2005 by D.M. Cannon of Mitcham Victoria. The varietal name of the Den. speciosum used by the hybridiser is unfortunately not recorded in the RHS International Hybrid Register.

SEPTEMBER MEETING RESULTS ORCHID OF THE MONTH Judges Choice Cattleya amethystoglossa ‘Orchidglade’; grown by L & G Bromley. This particular clone ‘Orchidglade’ has been awarded an AM/AOS in 1975, an HCC /NSW in 2012 and a 1

st /CAOB award in Brazil in 2012.

This Cattleya comes from Brazil growing at 30 to 900 metres elevation. They have been reported as growing in almost full sun at the tops of Palm Trees. They are best grown in about 2500-3500 foot-candles with night temperatures between 20 degrees in summer and 17 degrees in winter. Watering should be reduced in winter, but should not be permitted to remain dry for any period. Most growers like to grow these in a coarse bark mix, but others use anything from charcoal to peat and perlite.

BEST OF EVENING OPEN (50% culture, 50% quality) and POPULAR CHOICE

Open Lycamerlycaste (Lmc) Aquila; grown by Geoff and Jean Fulcher The parents of this hybrid are Lycamerlycaste Brugensis x Lycaste Jason. The cross was made in 1975 by Wyld Court Orchids, of Newbury in England. In its background are 3 x 25% Lycastes namely Lyc. virginalis, Lyc. lasioglossa, and Lyc. cruenta and another 25% Sudamerlycaste gigantea. Recommended cultural requirements are for it to be grown in intermediate conditions in dappled light.

BEST OF EVENING NOV/INTER (50% culture, 50% quality) Dendrobium Bergen; grown by G & S W Cook This native hybrid was made in 2004 by Down Under Native Orchids of Wamberal, NSW. The parents are Dendrobium Awesome x Dendrobium Candice. It is said to respond well when grown in bright indirect light in intermediate temperatures.
