Welcome

I read a beautiful quote recently by Preeti Shenoy: “If you have not made somebody's day happier, if you've not appreciated something good that has happened to you, and if you have not felt thankful to be alive, then you have wasted that day of your life on Earth.” It made me think of our wonderful clients who now call Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay home. Our homeowners exude warmth and fun and laughter and new friendships are growing in abundance. Never a day goes by when they don’t check on each other, celebrate each other’s milestones and share their life experiences.

It’s been a busy two months and as we move into September - spring is definitely in the air. The first three holes of the nine-hole golf course are now complete and our new undercover bowling green with clubhouse is about to start. Make sure you check out our stories on Pages 8-9 if you are looking at getting back into fitness training (or even starting – there’s no time like the present!) now that the weather is a little kinder.

There’s also been great progress on the Palm Lake Care Beachmere aged caring community across Bishop Road (read more on Page 5). Also in this edition, you’ll meet some new arrivals to Beachmere Bay and see who enjoyed the delights of our most recent Beach Party – the Beach House sure is the place to throw a great event! Don’t wait to book a personal tour of Beachmere Bay. It’s your time.

What’s happeningSEPTEMBER-OCTOBER EDITION

Every year, when spring hits Toowoomba, the regional city becomes the brightest place in South-East Queensland. Blooms blossom, greenery sprouts and flora reaches towards the sun — that's right, it's Carnival of Flowers time and the perfect destination for a weekender – or longer! Running from September 20-29, more than 1100 hectares of public parks and private gardens will be on display. And, they'll boast more than 180,000 blossoming bulbs and seedlings. The carnival kicks off with a three-day food and wine festival (September 20–22) and we guarantee there's no prettier place to be this spring. Our sister location, Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba will have a float in the Floral Parade on September 21 and many of the resort homes, as well as the resort grounds themselves, will be overflowing with colour as our residents vie for awards in the garden competition. Why not stop by and check them out for yourself? There are also self-drive itineraries available for download from the carnival website. Visit www.tcof.com.au

Just a little way down the Bruce Highway, Brisbane Festival 2019 will explode across the city in September, featuring a thrilling program of theatre, music, dance, circus, opera, the return of Treasury Brisbane Arcadia and Sunsuper Riverfire. A premier international event, Brisbane Festival is also the biggest event of its kind in Queensland with over a million people coming together to join the festivities. We're the beach party experts!Nothing says summer like a barbecue at the beach... even in winter! Eighty guests came to our recent Hamptons Beach Party and it was an event to remember. The mood was relaxed yet sophisticated - like stepping into your favourite summer beach house. Guests were treated to beautiful food and beverages including turkey burger sliders and key lime pie. Make some time to visit us soon at Beachmere Bay to enjoy the quintessential Hamptons experience and take in our newest addition, the Hamptons Beach House.

Aged caring community takes shapeThe Palm Lake Care Beachmere project has really moved ahead in leaps and bounds over the favourable dry winter months. Slabs have been poured and frames and trusses have also been completed on the area of the site closest to Bishop Road. Residents of Beachmere Bay may have also seen a bright pink crane onsite in recent weeks? It brought together all the major steelwork for the construction of the facility’s suspended slab section, closest to the water’s edge.

When complete, this $35 million class-leading residential aged caring community will offer its residents 24-hour support in 102 light and bright private ensuited rooms, each with individual access to the great outdoors (including deluxe waterfront suites and couples’ retreats – to keep partners together). The development takes full advantage of its enviable waterfront position, uninterrupted views of Moreton Bay and direct beach access.

Palm Lake Care Beachmere will offer residential, respite and palliative care options. It will also boast luxurious appointments and communal areas such as a café, hair salon, movie theatre and multiple lounge and dining options, including room service. The development will feature elegant Hamptons styling not unlike our own Beachmere Bay resort. As well as all these outstanding physical attributes, a vast range of weekly organised activities and excursions will keep residents as busy as they want to be.

If you have questions in relation to any of Palm Lake Care’s aged caring communities across South-East Queensland, including Palm Lake Care Beachmere, you can phone the Care Solutions team on 1800 246 677.

TONY & ELIZABETH (Villa 89)

After spending more than two years looking at our downsizing options we realised we consistently returned to Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay. We were attracted to the lifestyle on offer, and the proximity of this resort to both Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Since settling into the resort, we are thrilled with our choice, considering both the people we have met and the considerable activities on offer. We constantly feel as though we are on vacation and we are enjoying every moment of making our new home into a Hamptons haven!

Meet your new neighbours

BARRY & SHERYL (Villa 108)

When Barry and I retired, we decided it was time to look into downsizing. The perfect opportunity arose to check out ‘lifestyle’ properties when we saw an advertisement for an expo at Maroochy RSL. We met a Palm Lake Resort representative at the seminar who told us about the exciting new Beachmere Bay resort that was then on the drawing board. We had looked into other lifestyle resorts but were undecided until, later, when we received an email saying that construction was finally underway at Beachmere Bay! After attending a few functions as guests, we decided that this was where we wanted to be. We met Rhys and selected the Eastport design and paid our deposit. Our home took some months to sell. However, this worked to our advantage as we had a gap of just over three weeks between settlement of both properties which enabled us to visit family in New Zealand. While away, Rhys kept us up to date via email. We moved in on July 8 – a move that we are really pleased to have made. We have found everyone very friendly and the facilities second to none.

While we can tell you how amazing Beachmere Bay is, it's our homeowners who really know just how good life can be here by the Bay. Meet some of the newest faces who are calling Palm Lake Resort home...

ROGER & HELEN (Villa 107)

We had been looking for a change of location about two years before we finally decide to retire. We were living in an apartment in Teneriffe which had all the benefits of the vibrant city lifestyle of Brisbane, but it was becoming far too expensive and noisy for us. We visited numerous retirement and lifestyle villages from Ballina to the Sunshine Coast and finally decided that Beachmere Bay suited our wish list. Nicole was extremely helpful and suffered through our to-ing and fro-ing on plans and sites! On June 12, we took possession of a Laurel design villa and we are absolutely delighted with the house. The welcome from the residents was wonderful and we are looking forward to our time here and the friends we will no doubt make.

Meet your new neighbours

Beach home and its big garden proved to be too much work for Kathy and Lesleigh, they looked to downsize. A fortuitous visit to see friends at Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay sealed the deal.

“We were very impressed,” says Kathy. “We knew we would feel very comfortable here.”

While they’ve still got furniture to move and boxes to unpack, Kathy and Lesleigh are already throwing themselves into the lifestyle. They’ve picked up yoga and aqua aerobics and are keen to try indoor bowls and mah-jong. Kathy has

just been elected to the Residents’ Committee and is ready to start up golfing again after a two-year hiatus.

“We’ve settled in quickly,” says Kathy. “We already knew people here – previous neighbours and an old colleague – but we’re making new friends fast, too. There’s always someone to wave to, and you find yourself striking up conversations easily because everyone seems to have at least one thing in common.”

It’s a far cry from police work, but this next phase of Kathy and Lesleigh’s life is looking like it will suit them just fine.

There’s no way Kathy Rynders could have known what was ahead of her when she walked into Brisbane’s police headquarters at age 20. The daughter of a former police officer, Kathy had decided that her university arts degree – with majors in English and history – just wasn’t for her.

“It was really a spur of the moment decision,” Kathy recalls. “I come from a police family so I knew a lot about policing, and I liked the fact that you can do almost anything you want within the service.”

And Kathy certainly tried it all, from general duties to prosecution and, later, project management in senior roles. In Kathy’s final role before retiring, she had worked her way up to Deputy Police Commissioner.

“I did that for a few years, which was very interesting,” says Kathy. “I was responsible for every police station in the state, so I got to travel a lot and speak to many officers.”

Lesleigh, meanwhile, had graduated from detective work in Mackay to a role

in training, overseeing junior officers all over Queensland. Kathy and Lesleigh retired nine years ago, giving up the responsibilities of their extensive careers in the police force only to find themselves in new, very different roles.

“What no one tells you about retirement is that a lot of it is about looking after your family – it’s a time where you can care for your parents in return for everything they did for you,” says Kathy.

But when the upkeep of their Banksia

Kathy & Lesleigh find a new beat (Villa 2)

Positioning Palm Lake Resort as a leader in luxury health and wellness community lifestyle resorts, Palm Lake Group signed a multi-year deal with Milon to become the German brand’s exclusive client in the retirement sector here in Australia. Milon itself dates back to the late 1960s. It is credited with the invention of the first tennis ball-serving machine and has affiliations with Porsche. If you haven’t experienced Milon before, the circuit consists of 12 separate electronically controlled strength and cardio machines. Users simply insert their smart card into each piece of equipment as they progress around the circuit and the card will instantly automatically adjust the equipment to their requirement. Easy.

Milon Australia MD Marcin Lazinski says residents are encouraged to complete the 17.5-minute circuit three times per week for a balanced, total body training regime. Workout information is collected by cloud-based software so residents can track their health improvements.

“As a general rule of thumb we lose one per cent of muscle mass per year from the age of 35. Exercise can also be used

as a form of prevention against diseases like obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis – a far more cost effective and attractive proposition than treatment.”

No one leads the health and wellness push more than Palm Lake Resort company founder, Walter Elliott. It was Wal who ‘discovered’ Milon when it first hit his hometown of the Gold Coast. Wal was interviewed by a newspaper to share his passion for fitness and his enthusiasm for the Milon gym system.

“I just fit my card in and it tells me what I need to do. You do the rounds and the weights change as you go,” Wal told the paper. “Our residents love them.”

Palm Lake Group CEO Manuel Lang is passionate about ensuring Palm Lake Resort stays at the forefront of health and wellness.

“Palm Lake Resort’s significant investment in this unique and advanced wellness technology is in line with our ongoing commitment to care and ensuring that all our residents have the ability to live life to the fullest,” he says.

Palm Lake Resort residents are among the first in the Southern Hemisphere to experience the health benefits of one of the most technologically advanced electronic fitness training systems in the world – Milon.

Milon makes fitness easy

Pictured, swimming is a popular past time at Beachmere Bay in both our indoor and outdoor pools.

• From age 65, our strength decreases by 1-2 per cent each year.

• Recommended exercise for over 65s is 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per day, five days per week, as well as vigorous aerobic exercise for 20 minutes per day, two days per week.

• Exercises such as swimming or walking will maintain muscle strength, but will not improve it. Over 65s must be doing resistance training.

• Regular resistance training can increase muscle strength by up to 30 per cent in just six months, counteracting 15 years of muscle loss

• Doing 10 eccentric exercises per day (eccentric exercise is slow and long moving muscle contraction) can extend lifespan by up to 10 years.

• You can incorporate eccentric training into your home routine eg. slowly sit down at dining table or slowly walk down stairs.

• Good nutrition and rest is important. Avoid long periods of sitting.

• Milon machines have eccentric and concentric exercise capabilities.

Your health by the numbers

Winter is gone - time to dust off your exercise gear and hit the ground running (literally). But, are all forms of exercise created equal?

Spring into wellness

Pictured, the Milon gym at Beachmere Bay.

Now that the weather has started to warm up and being outdoors is appealing again, it’s time to shake off the winter hibernation and re-focus on your fitness – which won’t just help you feel great physically, but mentally, too. Regular exercise has been shown to positively and profoundly impact your mental health - relieving stress, improving your memory and boosting your overall mood. So, whether it’s been months or days since your last workout, or even if you are a newbie to lycra, there’s no time like the present to spring back into wellness. But where to start?

“The number one rule is making sure you don’t do too much, too soon,” says Justin Lin, musculoskeletal therapist and principal of the Brisbane Spine Clinic. Justin recommends the following exercises to build strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness. Lucky for us, many of these activities are available right here on site at Beachmere Bay:

AQUA AEROBICS AND SWIMMING“Hydrotherapy and other exercise in warm water will help your muscles to relax completely, while also improving your fitness and your balance – which is particularly important for falls prevention,” says Justin. Aqua aerobics classes are held on Wednesdays, 7.30am, in the indoor pool.

YOGA, TAI CHI AND PILATESJustin also recommends focusing on exercises that improve your flexibility if you’re getting back into exercise after a long break. They may also help improve your core stability, which helps protect your spine. Join in a yoga class here at Beachmere Bay on Thursdays at 8.15am in the Bay Function Room.

LAWN BOWLS AND TENPIN BOWLS“The social component of bowls makes it ideal for anyone who is just starting to exercise,” says Justin. “Social interaction has been proven to improve your compliance with exercise, encouraging you to keep at it.” Bowls is also a safe form of exercise that will help with your balance and coordination. Bowls coaching is offered weekly on Saturdays with beginners' classes at 9am and all other coaching starting at 10am.

HIT THE GYMDon’t be afraid of weights and resistance training – Justin says that it is important for bone density amongst over-55s, particularly women. The resort's Milon gymnasium is the perfect destination. Don't forget that Beachmere Bay personal trainer, Chris, is available on Fridays.

GO GOLFING“If you have been coached about your

form, golf can be a really good exercise as it trains your core stability and improves your general mobility.” Not to mention, carrying your golf bag and walking between holes helping with your cardiovascular fitness. On Mondays here at the resort, men's golf starts at 6.45am and the women's group begins at 9.30am. Away games are played on Wednesdays and Fridays.

POWER WALKING“Power walking can help challenge your heart rate and push you beyond your comfort level, which will greatly improve your fitness,” says Justin. Why not power walk with your pooch?

“We often find that people can become fearful to exercise in their retirement, particularly if they have degeneration in their joints,” says Justin. “But the thing with our body is, if you don’t use it, you lose it. If you maintain good muscle function, you may even hold off joint replacement and other kinds of surgery for a number of years.

“Do things in moderation but, if you have ongoing, persistent pain that lasts longer than a week or two, consider seeing a doctor or physiotherapist. Otherwise, don’t be afraid to keep up with regular exercise – the positive effects are amazing.”

Caretakers' reportFood, glorious foodHello everyone and welcome to The Gatsby newsletter for September-October. Well, my goodness, didn’t that time go by so quickly? We’ve been having way too much fun here at Beachmere Bay to notice how quickly winter flew by!

Welcome to all our newest homeowners. We hope you are all enjoying your beautiful new abodes and are getting to know and enjoy your wonderful new surroundings (you have to admit, the people here are pretty nice as well!).

We have had such a fantastic time here at the Bay over the past month or so. Our activities classes are seeing great numbers. Zumba and our ‘Seniors’ Exercise’ classes are very popular, as are our aqua aerobics sessions and Milon gym instruction. Also, a new yoga class has recently commenced with Linda taking everyone through a very relaxing hour of gentle moves on a soundtrack of soft music. Combine all this with the line dancing, card tournaments, bowling tournaments, golf competitions and more and you can see why everyone is having trouble squeezing all the things into their diaries!

Since our last newsletter, the homeowners have also enjoyed

Christmas in July. It was a fabulous night of fun, laughter and entertainment. Our singer and musician for the evening was an absolute hit, performing very popular song choices. We were also treated to some very classy dance moves from our wonderfully talented homeowners! The evening was topped off by a visit from Santa himself, including gifts from his Santa sack and photos upon his knee (even caretaker Wayne got in on the act!). Our “Cookie” Kay, once again did an outstanding job, providing everyone with a beautiful Christmas dinner with all the trimmings including Christmas pudding. She’s one talented lady. You can read more about Kay on Page 10 (see left). Thanks must also go to all the homeowners for the time and effort you all put in to making this such a great evening for all to enjoy.

We again have a busy time coming up over the next couple of months. Stay tuned for (hopefully) a few exciting announcements and new additions to our already packed itineraries. Until next time, enjoy your beautiful surroundings, join in and have fun!

Wayne & Aileen Morris Beachmere Bay Caretakers

When it comes to feeding the hungry Beachmere Bay masses, there’s no one better placed to take on that role than our resort cook, Kay Smoothy.

Kay has spent a lifetime working in the food and hospitality industry before she joined the Palm Lake Group some six years ago. In the early part of her career, Kay worked for various food service businesses from spit roast caterers to cafes and also ran her own catering business. Her talent with food was spotted early and she was headhunted by an organisation who went on to keep a 15-year contract with Kay to provide them with full time catering services. When that company closed doors, Palm Lake Group was lucky to pick up Kay. She has since worked across a variety of our locations including Palm Lake Resorts Eagleby, Deception Bay, Cooroy-Noosa and now Beachmere. Kay says she gets real joy out of knowing that people find pleasure in her meals.

“That’s the best part of the job – that people love my food,” Kay says.

And desserts are her speciality (“Not that I eat them! Kay laughs). Kay personally loves to produce delectable desserts the most, and says her individual pavlovas, as well as her sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce, are fan favourites in her Palm Lake Resort dining rooms.

Here at Beachmere Bay, Kay is in charge of feeding 100-odd residents at the weekly Wednesday dinner.

“And roasts are always the most popular,” Kay says.

While the menu is ever changing, Kay is adamant that one thing will stay the same – and that’s her support of local producers. She says Palm Lake Resort buys all local fresh produce and the meat comes from a butcher on Bribie Island.

“It’s good to support the local economy and put something back into our local community,” Kay says.

If you’ve enjoyed one of our weekly dinners here at Beachmere Bay’s Hampton’s Country Club, you would have enjoyed a hearty plate filled with foodie love – from Kay Smoothy.

As part of the weekly offering here at Palm Resort Beachmere Bay, every home receives a complimentary two-course dinner on a Wednesday night at the Hamptons Country Club. That’s 52 free meal vouchers per year, per household. If you’ve not yet indulged in a Wednesday night dinner, make sure you stop by. Not only are the meals restaurant quality (and produced by our wonderful Kay!), you also get to enjoy your meal in beautiful surrounds, alongside likeminded neighbours.

Wednesday supper is on us!
