Dear Brothers and Sisters,Kathy and I hope that all of

you enjoyed the beautiful sum-mer we had this year. Now that September is here, it’s time for all of us to resume our Lodge schedules. The Grand Lodge would like to thank all those who participated in this sum-mer’s activities. On June 16 we held our State Convention at the Holiday Inn in Mansfi eld. On August 4 we held our Grand Lodge Lobsterfest at the Hing-ham Sons of Italy. On July 26, I along with National Second Vice President Joseph Russo and our wives represented the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts at a national plenary session in Chicago, Illinois. I am happy to report that the Supreme Lodge has stuck to its budget restric-tions and is presently doing well.

I am extremely happy to re-port that the National Commis-sion for Social Justice (CSJ), through their concerted ef-forts, has succeeded in seeing the television program “Jersey Shore” taken off the air. The goal of the CSJ is to fi ght bias, bigotry, and defamation against Italians and Italian Americans and promote a positive image for Americans of Italian heri-tage. That is why it is extremely important that we continue to support our local and national CSJs. The National CSJ has put together a program called Recurring Gifts, making recur-ring monthly gifts an easy way to provide support to the CSJ. Once you sign up, (which can

be done by visiting osia.org or by calling the National offi ce), your donation is automatically charged to your credit card each month. A donation as small as $5 to $10 per month will help the CSJ to continue fi ghting for us. If we want CSJ to continue doing great work for Italian Americans we must support them.

On September 23, 2012, the Rocky Marciano Statue Unveil-ing Ceremony will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Rocky Marciano Stadium at Brockton High School – 470 Forest Avenue – Brockton. We encourage all of our members to attend this great event.

Last year’s Italian Heritage Month Dinner Dance was a sellout and we expect the same to be true this September 29, 2012. There will be a great buffet dinner and Steve Savio will perform for your listening and dancing pleasure. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Grand Lodge.

On October 1, 2012, the Oc-tober Italian American Heritage Month Committee will be hold-ing its annual kickoff at the Massachusetts State House Grand Staircase at 10:30 a.m. We encourage our members to join the celebration; the Gover-nor will be reading the October Italian Heritage Month procla-mation, Italian legislators will be thanking the Committee for their hard work, and they will serve refreshments. Again I ask that members please come and

celebrate our Italian Heritage Month Kickoff. Please also participate in the many events that are going on throughout the State.

On October 7 we will be participating in the Boston Co-lumbus Day Parade, this year held in East Boston. The Sons of Italy will be in division three (3); all members are welcome to enjoy either marching with the Grand Lodge, or riding in the many cars or fl oats that will be available. The start time is 1:00 p.m.; we will be lining up in the Suffolk Downs parking lot at 11:30 a.m.

The Purple Aster on Novem-ber 3, 2012 will be held at the American Legion Nonantum Post 440 in Newton. This is our signature event, and we need our membership to come and celebrate this great event and make it outstanding once again. Tickets are available at the Grand Lodge.

Kathy and I hope that all of our members enjoy October as Italian Heritage Month and show your pride in being Italian American. Get involved with your communities to spread our Italian heritage, culture and language, at your local city halls, libraries, or lodges, and invite your community to join you in celebrating October as Italian Heritage Month.

May God bless you all, the Order Sons of Italy in America, and all our service men and women overseas protecting our freedom.

I ‘Figli d’Italia’ marcer-anno col contingente # 3.

Tony Lo Bianco as Mayor Fiorello La Guardia in “THE LITTLE FLOWER.” Matinees and Evenings. “The Little Flower” presents a historic look into the life and careerof Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia — a courageous and flamboyant personality, who read comics to the children during a newspaper strike, fought against corruptionand cleaned up city politics setting a new standard for mayors and politicians in America. He was a great statesman and champion of the poor and under privileged, and a father figure to millions of Americans living through the hard times of the 1930’s and 1940’s. La Guardia was a man of integrity with outstanding principles, morals and values whose voice resonated throughout America. He was steadfast in standing up for his beliefs regardless of obstacles, challenges or political agenda. The show is set in “present time-1945” and “flashbacks.” Chronologically, it re-enacts important events in La Guardia’s life and the lessons he learned. It movescolorfully through the first half of the 20th century in America, and provides a clear vision of a man who not only lived through those times, but helped shape them. Theproblems La Guardia faced are parallel to those we are facing now. He held strong convictions on family values, inflation, women’s suffrage, financial responsibility, education, unions, political corruption and prohibition. He transcended political party barriers while holding strong to his plan of action that served him well then andcould serve the American people today! What this world needs is another La Guardia, and I am truly honored and excited to present “The Little Flower”, the return ofour One-Man Show. This adaptation is enlightening and inspirational. His legacy will live on forever!SPONSOR: MNA Productions, Inc. LOCATION: Dicapo Theater, 184 East 76th Street, New York, NY.

LODGE HISTORIES

In this issue we are featuring the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411, Natick, MA. If you have not as yet sent in your lodge history, please do and send it to the attention of our Historical Chairman Delia Bartucca at the Grand Lodge Offi ce, 93 Concord Ave., Belmont, Massachusetts 02478.

Three men, an idea, and a passion to see social justice and equality extended to a minority ethnic group were the ingredients that went into the creation of the Loggia Francesco DeSanctis #1411 of the Order Sons of Italy in America.

These three men and mem-bers of Natick’s St. Rocco Soci-ety – Edward Canzano, Pasquale Corbosiero, and Paul Arminio – founded the Francesco DeSanc-tis Lodge in April 1926. The Lodge was conceived to provide a social center through which Italian-Americans could gather for activities, mutual assis-tance, and a better understand-ing of their new environment. By providing a focal center for a cooperative effort, the Lodge was able to assist such worthy causes as the great medical research fund drives to the Florentine Flood Relief and the Leonard Morse Hospital Build-ing Fund. Through such hu-manitarian activities, the people and traditions of Italy spanned more than four thousand miles of ocean to fuse inextricably with the people and traditions of the New World. By such ac-tivities, the Natick Lodge lives up to the spirit of its namesake Francesco de Sanctis.

Francesco de Sanctis (1817-1883) was born in Morra Irpina (today known as Morra De Sanctis, Avellino) was one of the pivotal fi gures of nineteenth century Italian intellectual history. An educator, historian, and generally regarded as the greatest of all Italian literary critics, he served as governor of his native province of Avel-lino, was minister of educa-

tion, and chair of comparative lit-erature at the University of Naples.

Venerables and Presidents who have served since the institution of the Lodge in-clude: E. Canzaino, P. Armnio, P. Corbosiero, A. Costa, J. Fornaro, A. Grass, P. Luongo, F. Angelori, S. Melchiorri, J. Arminio, J. Pagliarulo, D. Cardellicchio, P. DiBona, O.D. Eramo, Lena Sauro, Violet Lavezzo, D. Colucci, Cathy Bourassa, Mary Brown, John Arena, Felicita Birmingham, Madeline Piccioli, and Christo-pher Piccioli.

The Francesco DeSanctis Lodge #1411 owns the building at 37 Washington Avenue in Natick. The land (Whitney Field) was initially purchased by the St. Rocco Society, which was founded by Frank Mastropietro. He was very instrumental in celebrating the yearly Feast of St. Rocco, parading the statue of St. Rocco accompanied by a band of musicians from Natick and other towns led by Maestro Alfredo Paolucci. In the evening there would be a carnival at Whitney Field. With the ex-ception of the portion of land on which the Lodge building now stands, Whitney Field was sold to the town of Natick by the members of the St. Rocco Society for $8,000, which was fair market value at the time. At the same time, the only exist-ing structure was the cement basement. However, since it was covered by tar paper, soci-ety members would congregate there to play cards and social-ize. The money received from the sale was augmented by the

by Dorothy Berlandi

sale of shares to members of the Society at the price of $5.00 per share and thus the completion of the building was brought about. Attorney John Casali was instrumental in working toward that goal. Meanwhile, while awaiting the construction of the Lodge building, meetings were held at various locations: the 3rd fl oor of the Natick Trust Co. (Citizens Bank) on Main St., above the R & L Furniture Co. on Main St., above Tony Grupposo’s Market on Summer St., and the Court Street building in Natick. The fulfi llment of their dreams as the result of hard work and solidarity motivated them to have a building to call their own.

The Francesco DeSanctis Lodge was built jointly by the members of Francesco De-Sanctis Lodge and St. Rocco Society. The construction began in 1957 and was completed in 1958. Meetings are held the second Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m., except in July and August.

From 1938 through World War II, Kenneth Arminio of Natick, and a graduate of Boston College, taught Italian at Natick High School. At the time the State required that there be a minimum of seven students in order to teach the language. The class included 23-25 students.

The Boys & Girls Junior Lodge for ages 13-18 was organized by Michael Palladino and Joseph Arminio in the mid-thirties. When these young men and women turned 18, they were eligible for regular membership in the Natick Lodge.

Pasta night was started in January 1993 by Nick Tritta and is currently managed by Francis Cristofori and his group of faith-ful and dedicated volunteers, making it very successful. Pasta night is held every Wednesday evening except during July and August. It was created to help pay for the building expenses, and along with other fund-raisers, increases our charitable contributions.

In 1997, Madeline and Tino Piccioli conceived the idea of building two 64' x 10' bocce courts. In September 1997, the women’s team — consist-ing of Marian DeFilipo, Carol Rossi, Janet Crisafulli and Milly Piccioli — entered the Grand Lodge Tournament in Watertown and won second place. The bocce courts were another big accomplishment of extensive research, dedicated time, and voluntary support by members, non-members, the New England Laborer’s Train-ing Academy of Hopkinton, MA and James Merloni. President Alexander Piccioli of Three-C Electrical Co., Inc. of Ashland did the drawings. Madeline and Tino contributed building materials and hardware, Robert Scott the back hoe, and Orazio Magazzu guard rails. The courts were completed in ten days in 1998, under the direction of Guy Mori, and given as a gift to the Francesco DeSanctis Lodge. Due to the increase of popular-ity of bocce, we are currently installing lights to extend bocce playing into the evenings.

NONNA MARY’S LIVER AND ONION

On a cutting board, cut up liver into one-inch portions and place in a bowl. Sprinkle fl our over the liver and stir so that all portions of liver are coated with fl our. Sprinkle liver with salt and pepper and set aside.

Remove outer skin from onion. Cut onion in half lengthwise.Cut into ¼ -inch strips lengthwise. Set aside in a separate bowl. Heat oil in skillet before placing liver into skillet. Stir to prevent

sticking. Continue frying and stirring over medium heat until all portions ofl iver brown lightly. Add onion strips and stir thoroughly. Cover and fry over medium/low heat about fi ve minutes. Check frequently to prevent sticking to skillet.

Meanwhile, in a cup, add three tablespoons of water to three tablespoons of wine of choice. When onion becomes opaque, add wine and water mixture to skillet. Stir thoroughly and cover. Allow contents to simmer slowly for a minute. Stir, cover and remove from burner.

Note: It always amazed me at how, in such a short time, my mother-in-law Mary prepared this Liver and Onions recipe.

“It’s easy, she would say to me.” It took me a while to learn that liver does cook quickly in a hot skillet, then becomes brown over medium heat. Covering the

liver portions with fl our before adding to the skillet creates a delicious broth when the water and wine are added to the skillet.

Like my mother-in-law, I serve this with fresh Italian bread and a green salad.

LODGE NEWS

It has proven diffi cult over the years to confi rm speakers during what is often a lazy and humid August. They commonly make the bridge of vacation (fare il ponte) until after Labor Day, this year being no excep-tion. However, within these past few days I have been able to con-fi rm speakers from September through November.

On Monday, September 24, accompl ished genea log ist James Forti – founding mem-ber of the Italian Genealogical Society of America and director and past president of the South Shore Genealogical Society – will speak on the basics of an Italian genealogical search.

On Monday, October 29, Dr. Spencer Di Scala of UMass Boston will speak on his pub-lication, Vittorio Orlando: Italy (Makers of the Modern World). Orlando was the Italian rep-resentative to the Paris Peace Conference of in 1919, and Dr. Di Scala’s work discusses the unjust treatment received by Italy at the Conference and Orlando’s futile efforts with President Woodrow Wilson. Dr. Di Scala impressively debunks the myth of the lack of courage of the Italian soldier, as well as chronicles the implanting of the seed of Fascism as a result of the Peace Conference decisions.

On Monday, November 26, it will be my pleasure to introduce

Dr. Nancy Harrowitz, Italian Section Head in the Romance Studies department of Boston University. Dr. Harrowitz will speak on the life and fascinat-ing publications of Primo Levi, brilliant chemist and writer who as an Italian Jew from Torino survived Auschwitz to write of his experiences until his death under questionable circumstances. Primo Levi’s experiences are woven together in a riveting story discussed by an expert.

The seventh season of the Culture Series will commence this September as part of an on-going effort that has been part of my mission as Chairman of the Italian Culture Commis-sion. It has been rewarding to witness the audience fulfill-ment and satisfaction at these events, and I have been very grateful to have met some very knowledgeable speakers. I also have the satisfaction of a mod-est effort at disseminating the best of our Italian heritage. In the past six years I have very much enjoyed and appreci-ated more than 50 excellent and qualified speakers and musicians who have presented on the Italian language and culture from the viewpoints of academia, business, and the general public.

The planning is often dif-ficult, but worth the effort.

A ugust 8, 2012

Dear Mr. DiStefano,

Please allow me to formally apologize to the entire organization for the issues experienced during your conference at the Holiday Inn Mansfi eld in June. Our hotel is known throughout the area for providing a great convention facility and serving excellent meals. Sadly in this case we failed to deliver on our promise. That affects our reputation, which hurts us, but more importantly to us it has tarnished our relationship with the Sons of Italy and that is just unacceptable. It is now up to us to restore your faith in us.

After speaking with several members of the committee I can certainly understand why your group would hesitate to return to the Holiday Inn Mansfi eld. We failed to deliver a conference that would meet or exceed your expectations. I could try to explain what happened and make excuses but that would not alter the facts-you could not hold a productive meeting and your served meal was below our standards. That is entirely our fault; we accept respon-sibility and again my sincere apologies.

Moving forward it is my responsibility to restore your faith in us. We have provided great conferences in the past and I’m cer-tain that we can do it again. We have enjoyed a long relationship with your group and would welcome the opportunity to win back your business. Our entire staff from Chef to the catering staff feels badly about what transpired and truly want to “WOW” your group in the future. We have discussed providing complimentary hors d’oeuvres, premium cuts of beef and upgrades to the meal. You have always expected great food from us and it is our goal to exceed your expectations in the future. We would also make sure that any other bookings near your dates would not be disruptive and we would schedule a buffer room next to your room to eliminate potential distractions.

Personally I offer my sincerest apology, it was humbling to hear of your groups concerns, and it is something that in my years in the business I have not had to endure before. We would love the opportunity to continue our relationship with the Sons of Italy and fi ght for your business. Great groups like yours are hard to come by and we cherish those relationships. We promise to work harder to restore your faith in us. We’ve done it before and can do it again. Certainly if there are any questions or concerns please do not hesi-tate to contact any one of us at the hotel.

Yours in hospitality,Nathan Weare, General Manager

A Preview and Review ofCulture Series Lectures

by Patrick Moreno

Finding expert speakers and making the corresponding arrangements all require a coordinated effort. Attempts to share this wealth of speakers with other lodges continue to be a daunting, fruitless effort. However, the number of visitors from other lodges as well as the general public has shown consistent growth in the past two years.

May 2013 will be my last full month as a Commission Chairman for the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. I intend to retire to the pleasures of reading, history, art history and literature. I can offer a hand and abundant advice to anyone committed to a love of the Italian language and culture, from any lodge or organization, who would like to initiate a comparable sequel to this Culture Series. The value and worth of a committed search and ordered presentation of gifted speakers or experts in the Italian language and culture are inestimable in the dissemination of our precious worldly heritage.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] for a suggested list of speakers for your lodge during Italian Heri-tage Month or after. Watch our Grand Lodge website osiama.org for information on guest speakers in the new year.

On a hot Saturday afternoon, 82 brothers, sisters, and guests arrived at the Hingham Sons of Italy to participate in the Grand Lodge Lobsterfest. The August 4 event was a huge success thanks to the efforts of Chairman and State Second Vice President Antonio Sestito and the many volunteers who worked throughout the day.

The outside volunteers, Joe Laugelle, Pasquale D’Elia, John Argiro, Bill Di Giacomo, and Er-ick Waugh, went to work build-ing the fi res to cook the corn and lobsters, adding charcoal to cook the steaks, and preparing the grounds for a feast. In the kitchen Marianne Sestito, Marissa Sestito, Carmelita Bello, Margaret Campbell, Florence Ferullo Kane, and Fran Mensah were busy baking potatoes, cutting the bread, melting the butter, washing the many pots and pans, and slicing the watermelon. Volunteers Ron Hill, Jim DiStefano, and Stephen DeAngelis were the backup volunteers serving our guests and cleaning up.

When the sun went down and everyone was full, guests proceeded inside the hall to enjoy some music and dancing. We would like to extend a special “thank you” to Antonio Sestito’s grandson Patrick Massey who took the pictures featured on the Grand Lodge website.

At its June meeting, the An-gelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge # 2183 of Wilmington awarded fi ve $1,000 scholarships and memberships in the lodge for four years to Gianna Buscone, Ashley White, Marina Boebel, John Rankin IV, and Nathan McGilvray.

Gianna Buscone, recipient of the Laura Caira Award, graduated from Wilmington High School and will be attend-ing Rivier College in the fall, where she will study for her degree in Nursing. While in high school, Gianna was involved with SADD, Girl Scouts, and martial arts, earning a black belt. Gianna spent two years teaching religious education classes at St. Thomas Church in Wilmington and was an altar server for 8 years. A founding member of Wilmington Junior Lodge #3729, she served as both Vice President and Presi-dent and was actively involved in organizing the lodge’s many community activities and proj-ects.

Ashley White, recipient of the Past Presidents’ Award, also graduated from Wilmington High School. She will be study-ing Sports Management at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in the fall. An ac-complished member of both the

varsity volleyball and softball teams, she also participated in DECA, a business club that competes within Massachusetts and with other states. Ashley’s community service centered around volunteering with spe-cial education students and tutoring grade schoolers. She also served as docent at a local museum.

Marina Boebel, a graduate of Bedford High School, received the Rev. Francis W. Mackin Memorial Award. Her plans are to study Nursing at Lynchburg College in the fall. Marina en-joyed a very successful athletic career while in high school. She played varsity soccer, softball, and indoor track, and as a senior, was named captain for all three sports. An all-around student, Marina was also ac-tively involved co-editing her high school yearbook, working as a member of the stage crew for her school’s musicals, and volunteering as a first grade Sunday School teacher.

John Rankin IV, a graduate of Haverhill High School, received the Christopher S. DiCecca Memorial Award. John also excelled in the sports arena. He was a four-year varsity let-terman for both lacrosse and hockey, and also participated in cross country. In addition

to his involvement with sports, John was an active member of the Latin Club and found the time to work 20 hours a week at the Crystal Lake Golf Club and Valley Hockey League. His nickname, “Governor,” is a testament to his leadership abilities, which we know will be put to good use in the fall at Assumption College, where he will be majoring in Biology.

In a celebration of survival, the town of Wilmington hosted its annual Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society on June 15-16, 2012. While the main goal of the event is to raise money for cancer research, Relay for Life is about much more than just fundraising. A two-day event with teams walking the track at Shawsheen Technical High School throughout the night, Relay for Life is meant to represent the fact that cancer never breaks for sleep.

Thanks to incredible support from local talent, businesses, fraternal organizations, and residents, Wilmington’s Relay for Life continues to be a tremendously successful event with very little overhead expense.

As in the past, members from Wilmington’s Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli Lodge and the Junior Lodge sponsored teams of walkers. In addition, the senior lodge presented a check in the amount of $1,700 to Relay for Life, which represented the net proceeds from their Easter Bunny Breakfast held on April 1st.

cipient of the Gerald Esposito Memorial Award, graduated from Wilmington High School. Nathan was very involved in his high school’s DECA Club, participating in business com-petitions since his freshman year and making it to the state championships every year. A member of the Wilmington Ju-nior Lodge, Nathan has been very involved in community ac-tivities and organizing fundrais-

The members of the Wilming-ton Sons of Italy congratulates these fi ve students on their high school accomplishments, wish them a successful four years in college, and invite them to meetings and events when they are home visiting.
