About RwandaFactsRwanda, popularly known as a land of a thousand hills is a stable East African country, easily accessible from Kenya and Uganda. It is relatively easy, safe and simple to travel around. It is landlocked, surrounded by Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east Burundi to the south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. It has five volcanoes, twenty-three lakes and numerous rivers, some forming the source of the River Nile.
GovernmentRwanda is a Presidential unitary Republic that is based upon a multiparty system governed under the constitution that was adopted in 2003 replacing the transitional constitution that was put in place in 1994. The President of Rwanda is the Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Among his other responsibilities are powers to create policy, administer government agencies, exercise the prerogative of mercy, negotiate and ratify treaties, etc. The President is elected by popular vote every seven years, and appoints the Prime Minister and members of Cabinet. The Rwandan Parliament is composed of two chambers, namely the Senate and the lower chamber-the Chamber of Deputies serving 5 year terms. The members of the Senate are selected by a variety of bodies and they serve eight-year terms. Rwanda has low corruption levels and the constitution provides for an Ombudsman whose duties include prevention and fighting of corruption. There is an existing policy of zero tolerance for corruption and any corrupt tendencies are handled seriously. The current constitution divides Rwanda into provinces, districts, cities, municipalities, towns, sectors and cells with each subdivision and its borders established by Parliament. The five provinces act as intermediaries between the national government and their constituent districts to ensure that national policies are implemented at the district level.
GeographyThe country lies 75miles south of the Equator, 880miles west of the Indian Ocean and 1250miles east of the Atlantic Ocean - literally in the heart of Africa.
Mountains dominate central and western Rwanda. These mountains are part of the East African Rift Valley. The highest peak, which is also Rwanda’s highest point, is Mount Karisimbi. The vegetation ranges from dense equatorial forest in the Southwest to tropical savannah in the east.
ClimateThe temperature averages 24-27°C (generally 30°C in the daytime and minimum 15° C at night, though it is often much colder in the mountains where snow and frost occur). Visit Nyungwe Forest if you would like to experience “winter” in tropical

Africa. The rainfall averages 900-1,600mm p.a. Rainy seasons are normally from February to April and November to January, although there have been some weather pattern changes recently.
CurrencyThe national currency is Rwandan Franc (RWF). As at the end of June 2015, 1 US Dollar (USD) was equivalent to 720 RWF. The smallest-value note is a 500 RWF note, which is the smallest note in physical size, as well. There are also notes in denominations of 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 RWF, with the larger notes becoming slightly larger in physical size. There are no notes over 5,000 RWF. Many places in Rwanda now accept credit cards, however it is advisable to carry some cash with you just in case, especially if you are travelling outside of Kigali longer than a few days. The smallest value coin is 1 RWF. However
the commonly used smallest value coin is 100 RWF. It is common for most businesses in Rwanda, including currency exchangers and gas stations, to round transactions to the nearest 100 RWF. There are ATMs all over Kigali, for every bank branch. Depending on your bank, this can be a much cheaper way to get francs because the ATMs use a much better exchange rate than currency exchanges.

“Beautiful setting ...delicious food... some of the best customer service I have experienced in Rwanda... ”
In the riverine forest on the edge of Lake Ihema is a small, private, lodge offering nine spacious, en-suite tents, dotted along the forested lakes’ edge. Sheltered by large trees and swaying palms, the lodge is quiet retreat in the spectacular setting of Akagera National Park. The tents are located along a boardwalk stretching either side of a thatched lounge and dining area. A raised deck overlooks the lake; enjoy a sundowner around a cosy campfire.Inside each tent is a comfortable queen or large twin beds and a private bathroom. For a touch of luxury, try the Tree Top Tent. Owned and management by the park, 100% of the profits from the lodge go back into the total management of the park supporting law enforcement, community engagement and conservation initatives. The lodge is entirely powered by solar. For bookings and more info:Phone: +250 (0) 787 11 33 00Email: [email protected]: www.ruzizilodge.com

AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
Set at a relatively low altitude on the border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park could
scarcely be more different in mood to the breezy cultivated hills that characterise much of Rwanda.
Rolling hills of acacia bush with panoramic views across scattered grassland, patches of thick forest and a mosaic of swamp-fringed lakes along the meandering Akagera watercourse contribute to this park’s almost unrivalled scenic beauty.
Akagera is unique in Rwanda as the only savannah environment in the country. Large herds of buffalo and impala, zebra and topi are commonly seen on the open plains, whilst smaller antelope such as oribi, klipspringer, bushbuck and reedbuck exist widely throughout the park. Elephants tend to stay around the lakes which are inhabited by large populations of hippo and crocodiles. Baboons and vervet monkeys are commonplace, less so is the secretive blue monkey. Leopard; hyena and jackal are also residents and may be seen on a night drive along with genet, serval, bushbabies, porcupine and other
nocturnal wildlife. An important population of sitatunga lives in the papyrus swamps along with other rarities such as the shoebill and other papyrus endemic bird species.
Camping alongside the picturesque lakes of Akagera is a truly mystical introduction to the wonders of the African bush. Pods of 50 hippopotami grunt and splutter throughout the day, while outsized crocodiles soak up the sun with their vast jaws menacingly agape. Magically, the air is torn apart by the unforgettable duetting of a pair of fish eagles, asserting their status as the avian monarchs of Africa’s waterways. Lining the lakes are some of the continent’s densest concentrations of waterbirds, while the connecting marshes are the haunt of the endangered and exquisite papyrus gonolek and the bizarre shoebill stork - the latter perhaps the most eagerly sought after of all African birds.
NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK In the southwest corner of Rwanda Nyungwe Forest National Park is vast untouched tropical rainforest with a high dense canopy. Nyungwe became a national park in 2004 when Rwanda sought to increase its tourism beyond the countries
mountain gorillas
Nyungwe National Park is a very rare and important habitat for many species, especially primates and birds. And at over 1000 square kilometers, Nyungwe is Africa’s largest protected mountain rainforest.
With about 310 bird species, 26 of which are endemic, Nyungwe is one of the most important and still undiscovered bird watching destinations in Africa. Reaching to almost 3000 meters above sea level with Mount Bigugu the highest point in the Park, Nyungwe’s forests extend to altitudes occupied by few other forests in Africa.
Nyungwe is also home to one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of chimpanzees and a sometimes noisy, acrobatic combination of other primates such as Rwenzori colobus and L’Hoest’s monkeys.
A variety of hiking and walking trails criss-cross the Park leading to a canopy walk, primate tracking adventures, the southernmost source of the Nile and ecotourism attractions. The park includes a colorful array of orchids, butterflies, moths and other insects. The beauty cannot be fully

expressed on paper; you just have to plan a trip across the majestic hills of southeast Rwanda.
VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARKTo the north lies the most famous destination in Rwanda Volcanoes National Park which has become synonymous with mountain gorilla tracking safaris and no visit to the country would be complete without visiting these majestic primates.
It includes Rwanda’s highest point; Mount Karisimbi 4507m and two active volcanoes, Mount Nyiragongo and Mount Nyamuragira. The massif which covers 8000km encompassing six active and three extinct volcanoes is a home to around half of the world’s precious mountain gorilla. This makes Rwanda probably the best place in Africa for a tracking safari.
Volcanoes national parks headquarters are based in the nearby village of Kinigi the administrative centre for permits and the place where all visitors gather in the morning for briefings before starting on their gorilla treks. It is important to note that issuing gorilla tracking permits is strictly regulated in Volcanoes National Park so it is advisable to plan your trip ahead, particularly if you want to travel to Rwanda in busy period between June and September.
There are other several tourist sites and opportunities in the park and surrounding area.one gets a chance to climb to Mount Bisoke or even hike to the summit of Karisimbi mountain the 5th highest mountain of Africa.Within the area there are a number of community based tourism experiences on offer. For example visiting villages, an ethno botany tour, fishing with local fish men or simply enjoying the breath taking scenery of the area.
VARIOUS ACTIVITIES TO DOGOLDEN MONKEYSBeyond the gorillas that made Rwanda famous, wildlife junkies will be thrilled to know they can track another species of primate called the golden monkey. The golden monkey can be found in volcanoes national park and their rich colours, energetic, demeanour and sizeable troupes of up to 30 individuals are indeed a sight one ought to behold.
There are two habituated troops of golden monkeys in volcanoes national park and the larger troop in Sabyinyo volcano with 800- 100 is the most visited.
MOUNTAIN GORILLA TREKKINGA silverback (mature male) weighs nearly three times as much as the average man (up to 200kg). The Mountain Gorilla is a distinct
species from its cousin the western lowland gorilla and was unknown to western science until 1902.
Gorillas share 97% of their genes with mankind. They are highly sociable, moving in troops of between 5 - 50 animals typically comprising a silverback, three or four wives and several young.
Females reach sexual maturity in their eighth year, males when they are around 13. Gorillas have few natural enemies and can live for up to 50 years in the wild. A female gorilla has a similar gestation period to humans, and may raise up to six offspring if she lives to old age. Gorillas spend most of their waking hours on the ground, but sleep in trees, each building itself a temporary nest.
BIRD WATCHINGRwanda has one of the highest bird counts on the continent. It has a number of birding species to be seen. This gives visitors the chance to see some of the Albertine rift endemic bird species. There are over 600 species in Rwanda and this is amazing.
The key area for bird watching in Rwanda is the vast Afromontane forest of Nyungwe national park and it is recognized as an important bird area.

Rwanda has been hitting the Safari headlines of late; listed on several “not-to-be-missed
destinations of 2019”. For a small country there are some big reasons to visit and Akagera features extensively.
Akagera National Park in the East is Rwanda’s largest national park and offers the only savannah-type environment in the country. Rolling grassland hills offer expansive views over east Africa’s largest protected wetland, areas of open grassland are interspersed with scattered trees and patches of scrub thicket blend into lush riverine vegetation on the fringes of lakes. Akagera’s diverse savannah landscape provides a stark contrast to the misty montane forests of Volcanoes National Park and the abundant
subtropical forests of Nyungwe. While tourism in Akagera is on the increase, there is still the sense of having the place entirely to yourself. Visit Akagera and experience the perfect combination of cosy comfort at Ruzizi Tented Lodge and rustic charm of Karenge Bush Camp, within one of the most diverse and scenic parks in the region.
Ruzizi, recently re-opening after renovations in May, is nestled in the riverine forest along the edge of Lake Ihema, Akagera’s largest lake. Conveniently located just a few kilometres from Akagera’s entrance Ruzizi Tented Lodge offers nine comfortable ensuite tents, bathrooms with solar hot water, breakfast with the hippos and dinner around the campfire under the stars. Take your time here and experience the activities Akagera has to

offer; boat safaris on Lake Ihema, night drives, a behind the scenes tour to learn about Akagera’s management and conservation story as well as a range of community cultural experiences.
Karenge Bush Camp, a four-hour game drive through the park, is down-to-earth and back to basics; spectacular views, hearty home-cooked food, simple tents, bucket bathrooms with a view and easy access to some of Akagera’s best wildlife viewing opportunities. The stunning views over Kilala Plain are best enjoyed with a sundowner after a day’s game drive up from the south. The camps simplicity allows you to get close to nature but leave a light footprint.
Combine Ruzizi Tented Lodge and Karenge Bush Camp for a complete Akagera experience from south to north. 100% of the profits from every stay go back into the management of the park as a whole, helping to fund law enforcement activities, community engagement programmes and conservation initiatives. In the past nine years, Akagera has undergone a
transformation under the public private partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and conservation non-profit, African Parks. Wildlife numbers have doubled in Akagera, illegal activities are at an all-time low and two iconic species have been returned to the park. Seven lions, brought in 2015, have now grown to more than 20 individuals. 18 Eastern black rhinos arrived in Akagera in 2017 after a decade of absence from the park. This founder population will be supplemented by an additional five rhinos later this year.

TIPS FOR A RESPONSIBLE SAFARI
Hotel Review
Development Board, the park has seen wildlife numbers more than double from less than 6,000 to an estimated over 12,000 animals, largely as a result of improved security and better habitat management. In the same period visitor numbers have also more than doubled from 15,000 tourists in 2010 to over 44,000 in 2018. In Volcanoes National Park 15,000 tourists visited 12 habituated gorilla groups in 2018, with nearly 30,000 tourists visiting the Volcanoes National Park area. It is not difficult to understand the potential impact of these numbers and the importance of regulating the experience with maximum group numbers, rules on proximity and more.
Here are a few best practices to follow when viewing wildlife and why they’re important:
It’s hard not to get excited about going on safari; seeing exotic wildlife, sleeping under the stars, for many it’s a once in a lifetime experience, but have you ever stopped to
consider what impact your visit has on the park and it’s inhabitants? Parks rely on tourism income to support conservation activities; every visit to Akagera directly contributes to both conservation of wildlife and work with the communities surrounding the park. But it is important to balance this need for tourism revenue with a respect for the needs of protected areas, which is why rules and regulations are in place; for your own safety as well as the wellbeing of wildlife and the environment.
In the nine years since Akagera National Park has been under the public private partnership between African Parks and the Rwanda

3. Don’t pick up wildlife or take away any natural article you find in the parkA tortoise crossing the road is tempting to pick up and take a closer look, did you know this can be life threatening for the tortoise? Tortoises store liquid in a cloacal sack, relying on this reservoir during dry times. They are prone to excreting this liquid when threatened, in an attempt to deter a predator, and then may perish as a result if unable to replenish their supply. Flowers, seeds, wood and bones are all part of the cycle of life in the bush, providing nourishment and housing for a huge variety of creatures, fertilising soils and encouraging new growth. “Just one.. “ might be tempting but multiplying that impact by 40,000 can be devastating.
We highly recommend taking a local guide when visiting the park, and traveling with a reputable tour company. We all love a close sighting of wildlife, taking photos and creating memorable experiences, but remember to be a responsible traveller. Your visit today has an impact, maybe on your own future visit. Respect for wildlife and the environment is the responsibility of all.

1. Keep a distanceOver time animals become more accustomed to the presence of people or vehicles, but if you get too close they may feel threatened. Maintaining a safe distance helps protect the wildlife and allows you to see their more natural behaviour. Animals who feel threatened will alter their behaviour, in the least they may learn to avoid vehicles and people making wildlife viewing more difficult in the long term, but more seriously, animals have been known to become so disturbed they neglect their young or fail to mate. Some of the larger and more dangerous wildlife, may become a threat to you.
2. Don’t drive off-roadWhile some parks allow off-road driving, Akagera does not. This is not to spoil your viewing experience but for your own safety and the protection of the park. Off-roading to get closer to animals can be disturbing to wildlife. They need a refuge to escape to if they feel threatened. Off-roading is damaging to the environment. Tourism undoubtedly has negative impacts on protected areas but these can be mitigated by sticking to the marked roads. Self-driving is permitted in Akagera but off-roading creates ambiguous tracks confusing to other tourists and carries the risk of getting lost.
