Transcript of September Newsletter 16 (8).pages
Welcome back! We are off and running on another exci6ng school year! The first few days of school are always the most exci6ng for staff and students. Students are making new friends and teachers are learning about their students. The first day of school brought us great news regarding enrollment. Our served enrollment is up 21 students from last year including a kindergarten class that has over 40 students!! Here is a quick enrollment breakdown comparing the first day of school this year to the first day of school last year:
2015-‐16 SY K-‐5th grade -‐ 158 students 6th-‐8th grade -‐ 76 students
9th-‐12th grade -‐ 105 students Total -‐ 339 students
2016-‐17 SY K-‐5th grade -‐ 180 students 6th-‐8th grade -‐ 81 students 9th-‐12th grade -‐ 99 students
Total -‐ 360 students (By comparison, we served 276 in 2011)
Hidden in these numbers is the fact that our smallest class is our senior class meaning we are expec6ng another large jump next year. Exci6ng 6mes in Janesville!
As many of you know, the school board has approved a proposal to put forth a bond issue for building expansion. This is the second 6me that we have asked the tax base to consider a $5.395 million dollar expansion. With growing student enrollment comes the need for more classroom space. This proposal would give us up to five addi6onal classrooms in the elementary where our enrollment is really taking off. More informa6on can be found on our website and flyers will be around town by the end of the week. If you have any ques6ons throughout the process, please do not hesitate to contact me, or stop at one of our town hall mee6ngs scheduled for October 25th and October 30th.
Best Regards, BJ Meaney

GENERAL OBLIGATION BOND TOWN HALL MEETING
OCTOBER 25, 2016 5:30-6:30 p.m.
PK-‐12 Student & Staff School Pictures will be on Friday, September 9th. (Yes, Seniors you have to get your photo also! However, you do not need to purchase any unless you wish to do so.)
New Daily Schedule for 2016-‐17 School Year SCHOOL HOURS: The normal school day for staff is 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. For students the normal school day is 8:15 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. unless there are other causes, early dismissal or late start for weather, or in-‐service. The school day for students every Wednesday is 8:15 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. Students will not be permitted in the school building before 8:00 a.m. unless a staff member supervises them. If supervised, students will remain in the cafeteria until the bell rings or if under staff supervision in the classroom or other area in the building. Exceptions will be made for inclement weather. Drop off and pick up are on the north end of the building and are noted with signs. All classrooms will be opened at 8:10 a.m. Breakfast is served each morning beginning at 7:55 a.m. and continuing until 8:25 a.m.
PARKING LOT & PICK UP/DROP OFF memo… 1. The upper level of the parking lot directly north of the building on the high school side has a double yellow line painted. This is a one-‐way lane for bus drop off/pick up and family drop off/pick up only. We are encouraging all families to drop off/pick up their students in this lane rather than in the front of the building. 2. To make our school a safer place, we will only have 2 doors open to K-‐12 students before 8:15. The activities/cafeteria door and the main ofVice door will be open. Any student who arrives before school starts will be asked to congregate in the cafeteria until the bell rings. We ask that you bring your students no earlier than 8:05 a.m. if possible. Preschool students will still be allowed to enter through the preschool doors on the north end of the building. There are also visitor parking spots for pick up/drop off on the north end of the building. Latch Key is directly across from the main ofVice.
3. PLEASE DO NOT park in the handicap parking unless you are authorized to do so.
4. Students, staff, and parents watch your speed and understand that we need to be cautious at all times. Look out for our Wildcats!
REMIND ACCOUNT: (Replacing KWWL’s Text Alert) We have created a Remind account to send out text alerts in the event we have a cancellation or delay due to weather. This will replace the service that KWWL used to provide. Sign up is simple. Text @mrbme to 81010. You will receive a follow-‐up text asking for your name and role. If you have any questions please contact BJ Meaney or Travis Temple.
NotiVications will also be posted on www.facebook.com/janesvilleCSD and our school website. Note to Secondary Students: If an ODD day is missed due to weather or other unique circumstances, the next day back will be an ODD day. If an EVEN day is missed, the next day back will be an EVEN day.

Welcome Back!
The school year is off to a great start and we have so much to look forward to this month! The Student Council has been busy
preparing for Homecoming fesMviMes which will begin on September 26th and conclude on Saturday, October 1st with the
homecoming dance. Please note the change of the homecoming dance from Friday to Saturday. This change was made based on
student request. We look forward to hosMng alumni and community members as we engage in homecoming tradiMons!
Items to Note:
• We have updated our informaMon management system from JMC to Infinite Campus. The process and learning involved in
making this change is quite extensive. We apologize for the delay in sharing account informaMon with students and parents and
appreciate your paMence. We will be sharing account log-‐in informaMon in the next few weeks. In the meanMme, if you have any
quesMons or concerns about how your student is performing in a parMcular class, please contact individual teachers.
• The 2016-‐17 Secondary Student/Parent Handbook has been updated on the website. Updates and reminders were shared with
all secondary students during an assembly on the first day of school. Please contact the school with any quesMons regarding the
handbook.
• We conMnue to encourage students to lead and learn The Wildcat Way by being PosiMve, Caring, Responsible and Respec[ul!
Again this year, we will recognize one student each month in grades 6-‐8 and 9-‐12 for demonstraMng the Wildcat Way. Look for
these celebraMons in our newsle^er and on our Facebook page.
Celebra/ons: 99% of our secondary students made growth or were proficient on the Iowa Assessments in the spring in math, reading or both. These test scores are one way we and the state determine the effecMveness of curriculum and instrucMon. For this reason we offered an incenMve to all students in grades 6-‐12 to moMvate them to do their very best and show us what they know and are able to do. Middle school students who earned this incenMve will have a pizza party and game Mme (dodgeball, board games, video games, etc.) during homecoming week. High school students who made growth or were proficient have earned a “personal day” with parameters. Parents of students who received this incenMve will receive a le^er in the mail with the specifics. Parents will be required to approve this day before it can be used. Please contact me if you have any quesMons acer receiving the le^er.
Our staff and students never cease to amaze me and all they do is only possible with parent and community support! I am looking forward to another great school year! Go Cats!
Krista Pugh, Secondary Principal

This month, the National Honor Society will be selling Yuda Bands to help a student in Mkoba, Zimbabwe go to school. Yuda Bands, handmade bracelets from Guatemala, are sold in fundraisers to help kids like Jabu Moyo go to school when they could not otherwise. This month from September 21st – October 5th, the National Honor Society will be selling these bands in the office and at home games. The bands cost $7.50 and all proceeds will go to Jabu if we reach a goal of 174 bands sold. As a group we are striving to sell as many bands as we can to help him go to school with fewer expenses.
My name is Jabu Moyo. I live in Mkoba. I could not continue with my education to secondary school because my father could not pay my school fees. My father lost his job at Antelope Park about three years ago and has been unemployed since then. We have been struggling as a family. If I get the opportunity to return to school, I want to work hard and become a teacher. I like reading books and playing football. -JABU MOYO

Nurses’ Notes……by Linda Bauer Oh, my! Summer is over and Fall is upon us! I have seen many injuries from falls - from swings, monkey bars, soccer, 4-square, football, untied shoe laces, bumps, pushes while standing in line, running in flip flops and the list keeps going. Most of these injures require cleaning the wound or abrasion, applying antibiotic ointment and bandaids. Some have required larger type dressings that I wrap to keep the dressing in place so that they can go out to play at the next recess. We have an energetic group of students!
Another thing I am seeing more of are stomach aches that are coming from not eating breakfast. I give them crackers or granola bars here, but they really need to start the day with a real breakfast. Not eating breakfast can lead to headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Some of the students need to just eat more at breakfast, especially those that are in a growing period and those involved in athletics after school. Healthy carbs, protein, and fruit are a good way to start the day. A reminder that our school does provide breakfast in the cafeteria every morning.
