Around the Greens - Forster

Greens Renovation

The greens have been cored in the last fortnight and are well on their way to recovering. We used an 8mm hollow tyne which allows us to punch more holes into the greens leaving more area for air in the root zone. We completed a double topdress after the coring process which has filled most of the holes while still allowing the air through the soil. We applied a fertiliser last week which has shown an increase in growth on the greens as well as a noticeable colour difference. This fertilisation will continue through the summer months. There has also been some seed applied to the weaker areas on the greens this has just started to germinate in the last couple of days.

8th Tee

Unfortunately the current 8th tee has become a safety concern for the shops and the residents along Boundary Street with too many golf balls leaving the course therefore a new teeing area for the 8th hole has been constructed in the past month. We had Craig Parry come up to help us with the design and orientation of the tee. The shape of the tee has allowed us to get closer to the fence which has increased the angle away from the Out of Bounds. We will also install a catch fence along the boundary. The turf for the tee has been laid and fertilised and once we see some growth we will begin topdressing quite heavily.

14th tee fence

The safety fence on the right of the 14th tee has been straightened out with a new retaining wall behind it to give some added strength. Most of this work has been carried out by our volunteer crew Neville and Dirk with the course crew helping dig the post holes and finishing the area of with some planting. Nev and Dirk have been helping with a lot of fence work over the last couple of months which has been a great help to us.

TUNCURRY

We have encountered a very dry and windy month resulting in evaporation rates on the plant in particular the Bent grass to rise. Therefore, we have got our irrigation system working with the injection pump mixing a wetting agent into the out-flow pipe in the pump shed to put the water in the profile of the soil where we want it to sit by altering the application rates.

Again, the team are kicking goals with continuation of projects and improvements to the golf course. The staff are certainly working as a team since the reviews took place and it is fantastic to have everyone using common sense and their initiatives to achieve the desired outcomes, other than a couple of small in-house problems they are doing what is right by me and the club.

Projects - Upcoming

The large project completed recently has been the addition of the 2 greenside bunkers on the 18th with the removal of the garden behind the green for much better visibility once the new facility opens up. This project required a lot of consultation with Craig Parry and he is delighted with the finish product. It will take time for the bunkers to stabilize and the turf to take but should grow in well. The wasteland on the 8th has been spoken about with Craig Parry and he is currently drawing up ideas to rectify this area. It will be grassed with undulations, but the grass will come from onsite so will not be started until we start removing turf from the tee pods and can transplant it .

Let us hope spring is kind to us.

Tuncurry Museum

We will keep you updated on the progress on our new FTGC Tuncurry Clubhouse and Golf Museum but progress is constant and I’m sure you will have seen first-hand the almost daily changes occurring.

Construction contracts were signed with a completion date of March 2021

however this is dependent on a number of factors and may need adjustments

due to supplies & weather.

A visit recently from our project partners the Australian Golf Heritage Society generated some fruitful discussions. We will continue to liaise with them while we develop our strategies for the building use, layout and the promotion of the venue to attract golf and public visitors, members and sponsors. We have some planning underway that we will share with you and look for your comments when that timing is appropriate. We will also investigate and apply for some Tourism and Educational sector grants that will deliver real value to the project going forward. We are also beginning to engage with Community partners, Council and Historic Assn and the like.

Sue Bellamy

Vice President
