Myall Coast Big Breakfast

Sunday: Breakfast

woodchopping competition

www.myallriverfestival.com.au See Full program on website!

There are only 100 or more days to go until the annual Myall River Festival for 2011 to be held on Friday 28 and Saturday, 29 October.

For more than eight years the festival continues to be a family-friendly celebration of the local community, its products and talents.

The events team is working hard to put together another exciting program. This year we are planning to compact the festival area so you won’t miss any of the amusements. Here is a snap shot of what we are planning:

Friday, 28 October will kick off early with the Myall Festival Cup golf competition. A new development to the program is the Myall River Floating Lantern display. Participants will be

invited to attach a message or wish to the lantern and release in on the River. This spectacular light display invites the ambience of peace and unity to linger during our festival weekend. As the lanterns float out of view the river will once again light up with the Myall River Fireworks Display, proudly sponsored by Tea Gardens Hotel Motel.

As Saturday, 29 October heats up the main stage entertainment, also sponsored by Tea Gardens Hotel Motel will feature dance performances and guest band. As the afternoon swings along there’ll be market stalls, children’s rides and all the normal river displays.

An integral part of the Myall River Festival is our art events organised by members of the Myall Coast Arts

Network (MCAN). These events are certain to satisfy both budding artists and enthusiasts. Another important component of our festival is the Hook ‘n Cook Wood Chopping Competition.

Festival organiser, Melinda McMahon says “this weekend is a great opportunity to invite your family and friends up to enjoy the beautiful Myall Coast and enjoy all the entertainment.”

Keep your eye out for future developments to the festival program. If your community group would like to participate in some way please contact Melinda McMahon on 0439 529 045. We want everyone to help make this festival the best ever! More information is available from the festival website at www.myallrivertfestival.com.au.

Taste of the Country for food like no udder!

Experience a Taste of the Country in this award winning café and retail outlet located in the heart of Hunter Valley Gardens Village. This popular café is like walking into an old fashioned, country kitchen.

Serving hearty country size meals from our all day breakfast, lunch, morning tea and afternoon tea menu, Taste

of the Country cafe offers a wide variety of menu choices. Catering for everyone including Coeliac customers, Taste of the Country has breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches, main meals, desserts, our famous scones and a great range of teas as well as Lavazza coffee.

Priding ourselves on the traditional country cooking, just like grandma's, you get value for money and are guaranteed to have Food Like No Udder. Our enormous burgers are made with homemade beef patties, our homemade vegan pattie, grandma's tuna and potato cake or poached chicken breast all served on huge Turkish rolls.

Customers come from far and wide to have our savoury mince on toast or our huge big country breakfasts. For those with a chilli appetite, try our Ghan Lamb Stew or our Hot Prawn Salad.

With food freshly prepared each day – the kitchen is always a hive of activity with something delicious on the boil.

Elevated from the other 23 shops in the village. Matilda, our Taste of the Country mascot welcomes you into the café or be enticed by the delicious smells from the cooking in the kitchen. Dine inside or walk through to the outside dining terrace, where you can

enjoy the magnificent views of the Hunter Valley Gardens, vineyards and the Broken Back mountain range while you sit, relax and indulge in delicious meals.

From what started out as a passion and interest in preserving, owner Louise Jamieson's business has developed quite dramatically over the past 7 years.

Purchase some of the preserves made on site daily – all included in the menu for you to taste and then take home as a memento of your dining experience. Browse through the selective country style gift ware and wooden signs for sale, take home one of our teddies or fill up the pantry with preserves.

Allow Louise and her friendly staff to entice you with her country style menu of hearty, family favorites all prepared freshly in the kitchen with local produce and homemade preserves with Food Like No Udder.

Pickled & Pitted

Tasting in the HunterPickled & Pitted The outlet for River Flats Estate Olive GroveRiver Flats Estate is a family owned olive grove nestled between the yellow cliffs of the Brokenback Range and the Wollombi Brook at Broke.

The grove of 3500 trees is comprised of a number of different, mainly Tuscan, varieties.

The oil olives are harvested at their peak and cold pressed within a few hours to extract the Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil which has a superb fresh, slightly peppery taste, although very popular plain, they also flavour the oil to produce the Herb & Garlic,

Lemon and Basil Oils. Their table fruit is hand picked and debittered the old fashioned way in brine, when they are happy with their flavour they are hand sorted and jarred, any marked fruit are made into tapenade. As the oil is unfiltered, the bottom layer of oil containing the particles is turned into a growing range of natural soaps they market under the brand Bare Nature’skin.

Michelle did a bush tucker course, then a 12 month herb course with Pat Collins from T.H.E Centre in Muswellbrook which combined with an already well developed love of aromatherapy sparked the idea for opening her own business. The government sponsored NEIS Scheme gave her the support and encouragement to continue. Starting with a moderate number of products but many ideas, Michelle has now created an extensive variety of soaps, natural skin care products, milk and honey baths, she also has an impressive array of crystals, jewellery, salt lamps and original cards.

The arrival of “Snow White”, a beautiful Sannen nanny goat now means goats milk soap and impromptu milking lessons have been added to the incredible experience that is Bare Nature’skin.

After planting the grove in the spring of ’99, the first good crush of oil in 2005 saw Marian launch into the world of “markets”, this has expanded till River Flats Estate is now represented at the Olive Tree Markets at the Junction Primary School in Newcastle, “Handmade in the Hunter” at Sobels Winery in Pokolbin, Singleton Farmers Market and in Sydney – Mosman, St Ives, Eveleigh St, Newport, Lane Cove, Glenorie and Galston. Having so much time on their hands the team decided to open a retail outlet, when the opportunity arose in August of ’05, thus was born Pickled & Pitted. The product range is always expanding now having some 30 varieties of olives and tapenades, 50 different chutneys, relishes, pickles, jams, mustards and dukkahs as well as a range of caramelized and gourmet vinegars. The shop also stocks cheeses, crackers, nuts, mueslis and other goodies sourced from other Hunter businesses as much as possible. Broke being a popular retreat from the hustle and bustle of Pokolbin and on the way to nearly everywhere Pickled & Pitted and Bare Nature’skin have become a regular stop off for many visitors to the area, with quite a few coming back time and time again for that product they can’t live without, that special gift or just to relax and give Bernard (the pig) a scratch.67 Wollombi St, Broke www.riverflatsestate.com.au www.barenatureskin.com

“N’Joy” WHALE WATCHING from NEWCASTLENewcastle’s latest Tourist Attraction for 2011 started May 28, 2011.At last, the absolute thrill and exhilaration of “Whale Watching” up

close on the water, is now available from the beautiful working harbour of Newcastle.

The brand new and eco-friendly luxury sailing Catamaran “N’Joy” is ready for the 2011 Whale Watch season, the start of the Northern Whale Migration from Antarctica to Northern Queensland.

Over the 2010 season, passengers enjoyed the thrill of over 500 whale sightings off Newcastle’s pristine coastline, and were in awe of being up so close with these magnificent gentle giants of the deep, as well as viewing Newcastle’s scenic beaches and beauty, from the water.

As well as the numerous whale sightings (mainly Humpbacks and a few rare sightings of Southern Rights, one with calf ), many of their cruises have also enjoyed the company of pods of dolphins, sharks, seals and the numerous marine bird life.

This spacious 15M luxury sailing catamaran provides the ultimate in comfort and stability with a huge level viewing foredeck for 24 people and unique open fly-bridge up high, for even better 360 degree viewing. The spacious saloon has lounge seating for 18 and the rear cockpit provides outdoor under-cover seating for another 17 people.

Never before has there been a more luxurious and intimate opportunity for people to see Newcastle from the water and enjoy the thrill of whale watching. It can be both a humbling and awe-inspiring experience to see these huge marine mammals up close, in the wild.

“N’Joy’s” 3 hour whale watching cruises will depart from the new Honeysuckle Boat Dock in front of the Crowne Plaza

Hotel on the foreshore every weekend (Sat & Sun) at 9.30am & 1pm and offers a rare chance to sail past the fabulous foreshore apartments, through the working harbour, sailing alongside the tug boats and massive coal carriers.

The catamaran will then sail past Nobbys Lighthouse and outside the heads into the ocean, venturing into the waters of Stockton Bight and along the coastline and pristine beaches south to Merewether and Redhead, in search of these gentle giants and their playful antics.

The cruise includes complimentary tea, coffee and soft-drinks plus cakes & biscuits, fully licensed bar and snacks.

“N’Joy” is also available for private charters for all those special occasions.

WINTER WHALE WONDERLAND!Summer is over and the northern migration of Humpback whales has commenced off the Newcastle coastline. Right now the whales are swimming north away from the freezing waters of the southern ocean where for the summer months they have been gorging themselves on krill, a tiny shrimp like creature that abounds in those Antarctic waters.

Experts predict that this year over 11,000 Humpback whales will be making their annual migration from the freezing Antarctic waters passing Newcastle on their way to the warmer tropical waters of Northern Queensland for breeding. The very first whales to travel past Newcastle on their 10,000 kilometre round trip are usually the sexually active adults. These are big animals up to 19 metres in length and up to 45 tonnes in weight.

Over the past month the team at NOVA Cruises have experienced an increase in the number and frequency of whales

passing Newcastle which indicates the main population are on their way. For the greatest view and to get up close to the whales the best place to be is onboard NOVA Cruises vessel on a whale watching cruise. NOVA Cruises experience shows the whales have a tendency to travel approximately 4km off the coastline of Newcastle which is roughly where the ships are anchored at sea.

As the Humpback population has virtually doubled in the last seven years and is increasing at a rate of 10-15% each year NOVA Cruises are seeing consistent humpback whale sightings and last year averaged a 93% sighting rate. Confident in their ability to find and take you to the whales NOVA Cruises are offering a free stand-by return cruise policy in 2011 so if you are unfortunate enough not to see whales on your cruise you can travel again on another whale watching cruise for free, T&C’s apply.

NOVA Cruises begin their fifth year of whale watching cruises direct from Lee Wharf, Newcastle on the 4th June 2011 at 10am and will operate whale watching cruises all the way through

to late October. Apart from Whale Watching, NOVA Cruises offer a range of cruises on Newcastle Harbour and the Hunter River including their Historic Morpeth Cruise. Details can be found at www.novacruises.com.au or call 0400 381 787 for a brochure.NOVA Cruises are offering a free stand-by return cruise policy in 2011 so if you are unfortunate enough not to see whales on your cruise you can travel again on another whale watching cruise for free, T&C's apply.

Peter Sesselmann acclaimed Kurri Kurri Artist and Gallery ownerPeter Sesselmann was born in Sydney in 1964 to an artistic family. He and his family moved to Norway when he was just 2.

He has always been interested in music and art and started playing Guitar at the age of 10 and built his first guitar just a few years later. Peter showed exceptional talent with his hands and at age 15 the Norwegian government offered a unique opportunity to skip 4 years of technical college and start training and study to become an Artificial Limb Maker.

In 1981 Peter moved back to Australia and completed his studies in Sydney RALAC. At 19 he bought into a small jewellery business in Sydney with his father and brother. Unfortunately, Peter’s father passed away shortly after buying the business. It was a tough time but the business slowly turned around. However, in the early years there had been simply no time to play music or paint. After a while Peter focused more on marketing

and eventually decided to join a band again after many years of silence. This was when he met his wife Anita who was the lead singer. Although the band was not a great success, Peter and Anita’s union is still going strong.

After 20 years Peter realised that he could not continue down this path that had taken him so far away from his love of music and art; so he sold the company and now focusses on his passion. He is back to his roots, painting and playing music as well as making musical instruments for musicians all over the world. His Gallery is open most days.245 Frame Drive, Sawyers Gully (5 mins from Kurri Kurri) www.peterman.com.au

Newcastle Museum openingThe much awaited new $24 million Newcastle Museum opened its doors to the public on Thursday 4 August at its new location in the historic railway workshops at Honeysuckle. It’s a welcoming place of social and cultural interaction, accessible collections and innovative educational programs. The site features permanent and temporary exhibition programs befitting a museum of national importance in Australia’s largest non-capital city. Committed to being a place for people that shows ideas and tells stories, the Newcastle Museum not only reflects the past but also celebrates innovation. It’s a place of fun, welcoming, light and full of wonder. The exhibition ‘Newcastle Story’ examines the land and people who have made us who we are today. The ‘Fire and Earth’ display showcases the two major industries, steelmaking and coal mining that have dominated the identity and landscape of the Hunter. Novocastrians can discover

the answers to who, how and why we are such a distinct and fascinating community.

The Supernova and Mininova exhibitions create an interactive scientific and technological learning playground, loaded with excitement and surprise. Their hands-on approach to learning is a core component of the museum and is historically a proven favourite with visitors. Other exhibitions sure to delight include Newcastle’s last tram and a newly-restored locomotive affectionately known as ‘The Buck’.

Regular travelling exhibitions will present a wider narrative of ideas, stories and futures and will provide visitors to the museum with a consistently fresh experience.

Waste KnotSee the possibilities for recycled waste as it is transformed into a treasure trove of art at Waste Knot a free outdoor exhibition on display around Newcastle Harbour on the weekend of Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 September.

The exhibition can be viewed from dawn until dusk and will include large artworks and sculptures made using recycled materials by local artists. It will extend from the Honeysuckle Restaurant precinct to Nobbys Beach, allowing the public to stroll casually along the Harbour and take in the sights.

Waste Knot was designed to highlight the potential for waste to be used for valuable purposes rather than be discarded. Much of this discarded waste then ends up on our rivers and beaches, hence the reason Newcastle Harbour was chosen to host the event.

Waste Knot follows on from the Waste as Art exhibition which will be held at the Hunter Wetlands Centre from August 7th to 24th.

Spring into action! September brings to Lake Macquarie warmer weather, new growth and plenty of opportunities to dust off those winter cobwebs and get active in the great outdoors. Walking is a fantastic way to get fit, be social and explore Lake Macquarie’s natural playground. With no special equipment required, just slap on a pair of comfy shoes, grab a drink bottle and walk your way through the range of gorgeous environments on offer in the area.

To truly reacquaint yourself with nature, there’s no better destination in Lake Macquarie than the Watagan Mountains, home to one national park, one state conservation area and three state forests. This is bushwalking at its most diverse, with flora ranging from moist rainforest to dryer eucalypt and pine forests. Features of interest include several lookouts delivering stunning vistas, Gap Creek Waterfall, some striking rock formations and aboriginal and colonial relics from the past.

If relaxation and socialising is what you are looking for, search no further than one of the many lakeside trails. Easy walks can be found at Green Point Foreshore Reserve near Belmont, Wangi Point State Conservation Area, and of course, the popular shared pathway at Warners Bay Foreshore. Stroll along the water’s edge with your friends or family and admire your tranquil surroundings. Why not catch up over a coffee at one of the nearby cafes afterwards?

For those escaping to Lake Macquarie for a much needed sea-change, you are well accommodated in the choice

of trails with an ocean setting. If you are looking for a moderate walk with spectacular views, don’t miss the Caves Beach Walk, starting from the southern end of Caves Beach and hugging the coastline for its whole duration. Other trails near the beach include the Ken and Audrey Owens Walk at Redhead and Glenrock Lagoon track at Kahibah.

Fancy moving at a faster pace? The Warners Bay Foreshore trail and the newly completed Fernleigh Track are both shared pathways, meaning they are suitable for cycling, scooters and

rollerblading in addition to walking.

To obtain a FREE copy of the Lake Macquarie Walking Trails Guide or any further information, contact the Lake Macquarie Visitors Information Centre on 1800 802 044, or visit the website: www.visitlakemac.com.au.

Street Art In the Park: Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery As a regional gallery, the philosophy of the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery is to support local practitioners, whether integrated into an in-house exhibition or developed as a project to complement touring product.

Street Art in the Park was developed to coincide with Bathurst Regional Art Gallery’s May’s: the May Lane Street Art Project. A weekend festival during which four Hunter-based street artists (Tunz One, Fussell, GWAN garywasaninja and The Butcher accompanied by a Hip Hop DJ Begzy from Mojos Lab) painted billboards erected in the gallery’s sculpture park.

Over the weekend 550 visited the gallery to view the works and interact with the artists. The aim of the project was to demystify street art and to promote the practitioners as bonifide artists working in a genre established in the early 1960s. Comments in the visitors book included: ”Amazing! Thank you to all supporters and artists for making this happen” and, “The most fantastic thing in art, this gallery has done!”

Valley View, Cessnock

Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast.

The Darkinjung people were the major indigenous inhabitants at the time of European contact and the City of Cessnock still abounds in indigenous place names and names with indigenous association such as Kurri Kurri, Laguna and Congewai.

Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including

automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular.

The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.

The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

What to See & Do■ Visit the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery and view their current exhibitions featuring Australian artists.

■ The historic Marthaville Guildry Craft and Gift Centre showcases locally handcrafted gifts.

■ Take in the scenic views from the Bimbadeen Lookout on the Great North Walk.

■ Tour the many local vineyards in the Lower Hunter.

■ The River of Black Gold Festival takes place during August with a number of different special events and talks throughout the month (see p18 for more details).

BLACK – not just a colour, but a way of lifeCoal - in a place like Cessnock it is underfoot, in the blood and even on the lungs. It is omnipresent in our way of life and ever present in our local peripheral vision.

'BLACK, a coal case' considers the past, present and future of coal in the region through showcasing historical artefacts from the area, alongside the works of contemporary artists who dissect the delicate relationships between coal, the environment, industry and community.

One such artist, Sarah Smuts-Kennedy plays with our idea of value, creating delicate ‘trophies’ adorned with coal, sometimes covered in gold leaf

referencing the ubiquitous footy trophy on every family mantelpiece.

Is this what coal means to you? Or is it big trucks; freight trains; a secure income; or dust and devastated landscape?

This exhibition explores all these aspects of coal through art and objects including old union banners, paintings of the coalfields and sculptures of pit ponies.

The Cessnock Regional Art Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday and 12 noon to 4pm on Sundays.

Hunter Art in the Gateway to the HunterThe Hunter’s latest addition to the art lovers trail has just opened its doors in Cessnock. Vivid Art Gallery celebrates the depth of creative talent throughout the Hunter Valley.

Vivid Art Gallery owners Leanne and Marc Brabander moved to the Hunter Valley just under 10 years ago in a bid to escape their corporate world. Marc took the first 1 year off as an opportunity to paint full time and to explore his creative side.

With a growing family so too came the need to earn a living, with that BINK Creative was born, offering graphic design and printing services to the Hunter Valley. More recently the creative yearning returned and from

that, Vivid Art Gallery was launched.

The gallery showcases a range of Hunter artists, including painters, ceramic artists, printer makers and photographers. Some great Hunter names like Dorothy Wishney and Chris and Frances Fussell are hung alongside younger talent. The exhibitions will change regularly so it is well worth popping in a few times during the year.

“We really want to explore the creative possibilities that the Hunter throws our way” …Leanne Brabander.Pictured below: Left: A100323-12 Lotus Pond by Di Baker (mixed media) Right: Yesterday’s Bouquet – Chris Fussell (acrylics)

Meet the Artist - Rene BragerRene has lived at Paterson in the Hunter Valley, NSW since 1990. In the early 80s he studied Ceramics at Meadowbank TAFE and the National Art School, after travelling extensively in Asia, Europe, UK and Ireland. In the early 80’s Rene worked at the University of NSW in the Industrial Arts Dept while completing a Master of Science (MSc) degree, researching into the suitability of various rock types found in the Hunter for use in ceramic glazes.Since retiring from business in 2004 he has concentrated on painting with watercolours and continue to develop his skills and techniques. Inspired by many things – birds,

flowers, landscapes and cityscapes, Rene usually tries to capture the mood and atmosphere in a scene. His paintings try to tell a story of some kind, whether it is the tension between an animal or bird and its prey or the vast empty space and light in a remote landscape. He doesn’t try to achieve a photorealistic representation but rather to capture the essence of the scene. He travels regularly and many of his painting ideas are drawn from overseas experiences.Rene's paintings are held in private collections in Australia, Ireland, Holland and the U.S.A. and they are now available from Lorn Gallery, 17 Belmore Road, Lorn.

Archibald prize winner in Maitland for portrait exhibition

Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) and Maitland City Council (MCC) is pleased to bring to Maitland a retrospective exhibition from 1999 Archibald Prize winner Euan Macleod. The exhibition simply titled Portraits showcases almost 20 years of portraits depicting not only the artist’s family, friends but a rich tapestry of people important to the artist.

This exhibition is about portraits and about painting people, and all around are portraits of known and recognisable people.

Macleod paintings are exquisite and it is interesting that, although Macleod has not painted countless portraits, he still knows what he wants from his subjects and he knows how to get it.

Euan MacLeod: Portraits is happening in Maitland in conjunction with another exhibition in the Hunter, at Newcastle Regional Art Gallery featuring Euan Macleod’s paintings of the landscape titled Surface Tensions.

Morpeth www.hunterimag.com.au

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of

shopping and dining in unique style.

It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place.

Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.

As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town.

You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth.

A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking.

Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and

shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town.

Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's most notorious criminals.

Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

What to See & Do■ Morpeth is National Trust classified, so take one of the Heritage Walks - enjoy the colorful history of Morpeth and its characters - in a living museum of Australia’s past.

■ Whether it be sampling from an extensive a la carte menu, hot chips in the park or a counter meal, Morpeth has something for every one.

■ The streets of Morpeth are home to over 40 specialty shops and boutiques. Browse the gift shops, antique shops, galleries, lolly shops, a tea house, ginger beer factory and bakery.

■ Visit the Morpeth Museum housed in the old Court House built in 1862.

There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843.

Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops.

Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations.

Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style.

9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food
