“A Harvest of Miracle Breakthroughs and Heavenly Blessings”

Greetings Mighty St. Stephen Disciples,

This year has been declared the “Year of the Harvest.” The Harvest is be-

fore our eyes. We are still growing. As we celebrate another year in the

history of our great church, we are very appreciative to the members for

the love, unity and support given to the success of the St. Stephen Baptist

Church. So many lives have been inspired through preaching, teaching

and serving the community, county, country and even our world. The de-

velopment of St. Stephen members into mature disciples has certainly con-

tributed to the achievements of the ministry. It brings so much joy to see us

walking in harmony and working together for the common good of man-

kind to the glory of God. We appreciate the love, respect and support that

you have shown to your Pastor & First Lady. You make leading a pleasur-

able experience.

While 68 years is a wonderful milestone, there are still hills to climb,

mountains to move and lives to whom we must share the Gospel. We chal-

lenge the members to continue worshipping, serving, giving and loving in

the name of Jesus. The best is yet to come.

With the Love of Jesus,

Welcome HomeWelcome HomeWelcome HomeWelcome Home

The church is like a family expecting guests into their home. Have you taken a look at your church facilities lately? How are you welcoming guests into your church?

Curb Appeal - One of the first perceptions that a guest has of your church is based on its appearance from the street. It’s easy to become so engrossed with what goes on inside our church that we don’t recognize the positive or negative signals given by the exteriors of our building. What would a guest note about your church’s curb appeal? ♦ Are the doors open to the street and sidewalks, or does the building give the appearance of a fortress? ♦ Are the doors themselves inviting, or are they dark and drab, making you wonder what’s happening behind them? ♦ Once inside, is it obvious where to go to worship if you are a first-time guest? ♦ Is there easy access to the parking lot and plenty of parking near the main entrance marked for guests? ♦ Are there any indications from the exterior that your church is celebrating a particular season or event? ♦ Does the upkeep and maintenance of the buildings and grounds show that the members take pride in their buildings? This brief listing should stimulate your thinking about your church, maybe even prompting the creation of a to-do list. These items, as important as they are, are only one aspect of welcoming guests. How are your attitudes towards the people, both guests and members, who will be walking into your church?

Organized Friendliness - Effective welcoming is best accomplished by adopting an attitude of organized friendliness. The fo-cus should be on the needs of the worshipers from the time they enter the parking lot until they are seated for worship. It’s best handled by an official group of people who not only have the gifts and graces to express social warmth, but are also willing to commit their time and energy to this ministry. When done well, it’s a major plus factor in the church’s total ministry.

Greeting Unleashed - The ministry of greeting in churches today often ranks below that of preaching, teaching and music. It’s important to remember that the greeting is the first impression guests get of your church. And in fact, if a bad impression is made in the greeting stage, a newcomer may completely shut down, regardless of how fantastic the other elements of the church are. Greeting is a ministry, one that is becoming more important than ever in today’s experience-oriented culture. The guests coming to your church next Sunday may not understand all of the words they will hear, but the warm and caring actions of your greeting team will speak loud and clear. To the person seeking peace and truth, an ounce of kindness is worth a pound of preaching. Church greeters have a one-another ministry – face to face, hand to hand and heart to heart with people they are called to serve. Church greeting should be elevated to its fully deserved and recognized status as a one-another ministry. Throughout Paul’s letter to the Romans are seven references to the one-another ministry. What a great spiritual and biblical foundation for the ministry of church greeters.

♦ Accept One Another – Romans 15:7 gives us the ministry of mutual acceptance, resting on Christ’s teaching of uncondi-tional love. A verbal greeting and/or an offer of a handshake are ways of focusing on the other person.

♦ Honor One Another – Romans 12:10 provides the one-another ministry of an encouraging word. ♦ Be Kind to One Another – Kindness is found in Romans 12:10, as well as deliberate acts of kindness welcoming worship-

ers, no matter what. Greeting with a kind heart can set the tone for the rest of the day. ♦ Love One Another – In Romans 13:8, unconditional goodwill is expressed in a positive attitude towards all people. ♦ Understand One Another – Romans 14:13 phrases it negatively, but a positive approach and spiritual understanding will

overcome a negative attitude. We also need to remember that our lives outside the church make a powerful statement, so we must live in an uncompromising manner.

♦ Instruct One Another – Romans 15:4 reminds us that we are role models in the fruit of the Spirit at all times. ♦ Greet One Another –In Romans 16:16, we are reminded of the human touch and its important healing and calming quali-

ties. We also need to be sensitive to the manner of the touch. In most cases, the offer of a handshake is appropriate for guests, while a friendly hug maybe more appropriate for friends and long-time members. The key is to express a genuine welcome in the manner most appropriate.

♦ Serve One Another – Paul’s writing in Galatians 5:13, spells it out without prejudice or judgment, to welcome and serve all who come in the name of Christ. When a church understands and practice these one-another aspects, it is well on the way to living out the presence of Christ within and it becomes very obvious to those to whom are extended a friendly hand.

First Impressions Are Everything

Page 5: September issue

He almost didn’t see the old, stranded lady on the side of the road. But even in the dim light of the day, he could see

she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes Benz and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he

approached her. Even with a smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour, so was

he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing

out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill which only fear can put in you. He said, “I’m here to

help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan.” Well, all she had

was a flat tire, but for an old lady that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the

jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire, but he had to get dirty and his hands

hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that

she was from St. Louis and was only passing through. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid. Bryan

just smiled as he closed her trunk. She asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been alright

with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never

thought twice about the money. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there

were plenty who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him

to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who

needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, “…and think of me.” He

waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold, depressing day, but he felt good as he headed

home, disappearing into the twilight. A few miles down the road, the lady saw a small café. She went in to grab a

bite to eat and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy-looking restaurant. Out-

side were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The cash register was like the telephone of an

out-of-work actor, it didn’t ring much. Her waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She

had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress

was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The lady wondered how

someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan. After the lady finished her

meal, while the waitress went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, the lady slipped right out the door. She was

gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be, and then she noticed

something written on the napkin under which were four $100 bills. There were tears in her eyes when she read what

the lady wrote: “You don’t owe me anything, I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I’m

helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: do not let this chain of love end with you.”

Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day.

That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady

had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next

month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave

him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, “Everything’s going to be alright. I love you, Bryan.”

Attitudes By Charles Swindell

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or a skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you.

September’s a season in between

When summertime meets fall:

When maple leaves begin to gold

As autumn comes to call.

September’s a season in itself

When it’s not too hot or cold;

When butterflies go flitting by

And mums bloom uncontrolled.

September’s a season full of change

When each new day’s a delight;

When birds start flying southward

And there’s a harvest-moon at night.

September’s a season in between

When summer’s past her prime;

When mother nature dons a dress

Of almost autumn time.

An Inside Look at the SHARE Ministry

The SHARE (Self Help And Resource Exchange) Food Network is a non-profit, community-building network. SHARE serves an average of 12,000 families monthly, through a network of 300 volunteer host organizations. These organizations include churches (of all denominations), senior centers, military installations, head start programs, schools, etc. SHARE is a self-help pro-gram that is open to anyone who wishes to participate. If you eat, you qualify. There are no in-come restrictions. To view monthly menus, feel free to visit www.sharedc.com. The SSBC SHARE Ministry’s mission is to provide quality food packages monthly to families at a reduced cost, promote volunteer service, build partnerships, and promote health and wellness in our local community. (Matthew 25:35) In September 2001, we became a “Host Site” for the SHARE Organization and the SHARE Min-istry was born at SSBC. We are entering into our tenth year.

Every month the members of this ministry and volunteers perform two or more hours of volunteer work in the community either bagging the food at the warehouse or distributing the food to people who have purchased packages. The food packages contain frozen meats, fresh fruits and vegeta-bles also items such as beans, rice, pasta or potatoes. This work is done out of our Mercy House once a month (every third or fourth Saturday) between 11:30am and 12:30pm. Right now these packages cost $20 but are worth approximately $40. The purpose is to help families stretch valu-able food dollars, which is truly needed in our present economy, and this follows Romans 12:13 (NIV): Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

SSBC has blessed hundreds of families throughout the years with free food packages, especially at Thanksgiving. Our disciples have generously opened their hearts and wallets to donate unsel-fishly so that we can feed 200 or more families. By being a host site, we have formed relation-ships with many people in the community.

The SHARE Ministry labors as “One in the Spirit” and prays constantly to grow and be a blessing to many. So, if you want to be on a team with committed and conscientious people, come join us! Contact Sister Johnie Smith at (301) 894-1645.

Marveling At The Moon

The moon reaches the temperature of 243 degrees at midday on the lunar equator. At night, the temperature drops to 261 de-grees.

The Sea of Tranquility is on the moon, but is not a real sea. It is a “maria,” one of the regions that appear dark when looking at it.

The footprints made by astronauts walking on the moon will not erode or blow away, as there is no wind or water on the moon.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon with his left foot.

Astronaut Alan Sheppard hit a golf ball on the moon, sending it 2,400 feet.

Just 22 seconds’ worth of fuel remained when Apollo 11’s lu-nar module landed on the moon.

You are always viewing the same half of the moon, since it ro-tates at exactly the same rate it is moving around the earth.

Flying once around the moon is the equivalent of a round trip from New York to London.

The last man to step on the moon was Gene Cernan in 1972.

How to Find a Reputable Debt Settlement Company

There are a variety of Debt Settlement programs available and you should choose the one that makes the most sense for your situation. Always verify claims made by the provider. Ask if they have standards they adhere to. A reputable company will always discuss the potential challenges as well as the benefits of their program before enrolling you as a client. A reputable company will not make claims about “Government Bailouts”, “Obama Funds”, “Consumer Stimulus Programs” or any other false claims about debt settlement being a part of any govern-ment programs. Neither the White House nor President Obama have sanctioned, created or otherwise endorsed any national debt relief or forgiveness program or initiative for consumers. A reputable company will display their physical location ad-dress on their website. A reputable company will conduct a thorough review of your financial situation, including all ex-penses and income before determining eligibility for their set-tlement program. A reputable company will provide consumers with a copy of their service agreement prior to requiring the consumer to provide complete banking and accounting infor-mation or social security number. Ask for cancellation and re-fund policies in writing. (By Louis Silver, Family Financial Care)

Laughing the Stress Away

“If you can laugh at it, you can survive it.”

-Bill Cosby

Stress affects everyone and has become one of the most

serious health issues of our times. There are many ways

to deal with stress, some more effective than others. One

of the quickest and easiest ways to reduce stress is to

find humor in your daily life.

In fact, it turns out that laughing is good for your over-

all health. Researchers have found that people with

heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in hu-

morous situations than those with healthy hearts.

Laughter strengthens the immune system and lowers

high levels of stress hormones. Business researchers

have also recognized the benefits of laughter and humor

in problem solving and creativity in business environ-

ments. Workers who find their jobs fun perform better

and get along better with co-workers than those who do

not view their jobs as fun.

It is easy to inject humor into your daily life. Take time

each day to enjoy something funny. Read a book of

jokes or talk to a friend who makes you laugh. Also, be-

ing able to laugh at yourself goes a long way towards

reducing stress. Humor can keep you from taking your-

self too seriously and can make dealing with others eas-

ier. It can also distract you from the situations that are

causing you stress, allowing you to take a moment to see

things in a different light.

So, next time you are feeling stressed out, take a mo-

ment for yourself. Take a deep breath, smile, and think

a funny thought. Grab a bite to eat with a funny friend

or watch your favorite sitcom. Although it doesn’t get

rid of the situation, you will be better equipped to han-

dle your daily stress.

I thank God that Pastor has allowed our Father to use him for God’s glory to touch so many lives and to draw souls to Christ Jesus. He is a great leader, teacher, preacher and speaker. Everyone who has an encounter with him is forever changed. Thank You, Pastor, for all of your love, encouragement and support personally and towards the Newsletter Ministry. We love you and your family dearly and pray that God will con-tinue to bless you and use you for His mighty works.

Happy 15th Anniversary Pastor!
