PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE — Lynn Ankney

Am I the only one that feels like September is a sort of “second January”? It signals the end of summer and vacations and the beginning of

fall, with a return to school and structured weekly routines. In OIPA operations, it’s a resumption of our monthly meetings and the launch of our annual membership drive.

Stay InformedThroughout the year, we keep in touch with many of you via our:

• Lively Facebook page – www.facebook.com/oldirvingparkassoc/,

• Community connecting google group – https://groups.google.com/forum/#!aboutgroup/oipa-parents-discuss,

• Periodic e-mail blasts, subscribe by sending a blank e-mail to [email protected],

• And, this newsletter.

In support of our goal to inform and engage our membership, we aim to create meaningful opportunities for neighbors to connect face-to-face at our open meetings. I have three (and a half) requests for everyone reading this letter.

First, mark your calendars for the 2019/2020 meeting dates (usually the 2nd Monday of the month): All meetings, but the holiday party and ice cream social, begin at 7:30pm and take place in the lower level of the St. John’s Episcopal church on Byron and Kostner. Enter the Byron door.

• Meeting Dates: 9/9, 10/14, 11/11

• December holiday party (tentatively Sunday evening 12/8)

• No January meeting

• 2020 Meeting Dates: 2/10, 3/9, 4/13, 5/11

• June ice cream social, Sunday 6/7 at 4pm

Second, pass this publication to a new neighbor or OIP friend who is not yet a member, and then bring them to a meeting. Did you know we offer meeting snacks and refreshments? We encourage BYOB, too.

Third, PLEASE, renew your OIPA membership! Everyone’s membership expires 8/31/19 (but if you renewed your dues after May 1st, you’re good until 8/31/20). As a reminder, you can join or renew online at oldirvingpark.com/join-us/ or complete and send in the membership form on page 35 in this newsletter. We offer three annual membership options:

• Standard ($25/$15 for seniors age 65+): monthly meetings, hand-delivered paper newsletter (this publication), member/partner birthday and anniversary published in the newsletter, ice-cream social, holiday dinner

• Good Neighbor ($75): Standard membership plus names and birthdays of your child(ren) and/or pet(s) in the newsletter and an OIPA tote bag

• Neighborhood All-Star ($150): Good Neighbor membership plus admission for two to an exclusive OIPA cocktail party.

As a special incentive, renew your dues at the Neighborhood All-Star level between now and October 1st and, you’ll receive an invitation to this year’s 2nd Annual All-Star cocktail party (Friday, 10/19) and the 2020 party (date TBD).

Regardless of your membership level or how many meetings you attend, we encourage every Old Irving Park resident to do their part to make our neighborhood a vibrant, connected, safe community for everyone who chooses to make OIP home, while keeping in mind our tag line, “Because Good Neighborhoods Don’t Just Happen.”

• OIPA Officer candidate statements

• Announcement of 2019 green space adoption awards

• Special Guests: Alderman Samantha Nugent (39th) will address our membership, sharing highlights from her time in office and outlining her top priorities. And Alderman Jim Gardiner (45th).

We Want to Hear Your Ideas!Do you have any fun meeting topics or desired guest speaker requests? What will pull you away from home on a Monday night? A couple of topics to consider are “cool stuff I found in my house during a renovation,” “bullet journaling in the digital age,” and “urban farming, composting and chicken keeping.”

Don’t be shy—give us a holler. If you are interested in a topic, chances are others will be too. Send your ideas to [email protected].

OIPA BOARD MEETING REPORT

Attendees: Lynn Ankney, Adrienne Chan, Scott Legan, Annie Swingen, Colleen Kenny, Meredith O’Sullivan, and Bart Goldberg.

The Board meeting commenced at 7:05 p.m. Since the location was at my house it was very convenient for all concerned (that would be me), but some complaints were registered about the food and drink that was provided, or more specifically what was not provided. In my defense I chose not to try to even compete with the choice victuals provided by Colleen at our last meeting, and I did not supply wine so as discourage them from staying all night. I will again mention that Colleen will host the All-Star Party for OIPA members again this year, so make sure you upgrade your membership. It is well worth it.

Treasurer’s Reports: President Ankney, presented her Treasurer’s Reports for May, June, and July, along with the fiscal year-end snapshot that is being published in this issue. The reports were unanimously approved by the Board. In her role As Treasurer, Lynn made a number of sensible proposed modifications in the way we categorize and report our finances. Those modifications were discussed and largely approved by the Board.

Membership: Meredith O’Sullivan reported that renewals continue to arrive steadily. She presented the Treasurer with about 45 renewal checks. We discussed a renewal push to occur in September, and repeating the offer for attendance at both the 2019 and 2020 VIP Party if people join in that month.

Reports on Board Projects: Scott Legan has been working on solving the problem with our malfunctioning clock located on Irving Park Road. He has been working with the manufacturer to isolate the problem, and the Board is going to order a new control panel which will need to be installed by an electrician. Scott has also been busy with assisting us in getting our murals registered with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. This is very important as unregistered murals risk being removed by the City. Adrienne reported on the extensive work that she has been performing relating to the Greenspace Adoption for our planters on Irving Park Rd. The volunteer involvement has been outstanding as all but our three “problem” planters were adopted this year. The awards for planters are eagerly awaited and will be announced soon. Adrienne has also been busily looking into options for improving the remaining three planters and will report back next month. Colleen suggested a very interesting new proposal to look into better “branding” of our neighborhood at the entry points and at the round-a-bouts, instead of just on Irving Park Road, and she volunteered to look further into some options.

OIPA Archives: 10 banker’s boxes containing OIPA historical materials have been prepared and are intended to be moved to Sulzer Regional Library for permanent storage pending approval of the build-out of the library space, which is expected shortly. We have identified two complete sets of our newsletters since its inception in 1983. One set will be delivered

to Sulzer, a second will be retained by us, and a third partial set will be delivered to Disney II to be used as model historical documents. We are still working on archiving the photographs.

Business/Developments: Updates were given regarding Burt’s Pizza, Maplewood Brewing and a future Cozy Corner that will be located at the former Salvation Army location. The latter is a popular diner already serving breakfast and lunch in four other Chicago locations.

Irving Park Road Water Main Replacement: President Ankney provided us with the scoop on this large City project that will cause considerable inconvenience to our neighborhood in the forthcoming months. The

replacement of the water pipes started on August 12th at Kolmar and Irving Park and from there it will proceed east until it reaches Wolcott. It is expected to reach Keeler Avenue by December of this year. The work requires the closing of one lane at a time, and they will alternate lanes for closure as they proceed east. The effect that this work will have on our sidewalk projects was also discussed.

Recent Meetings Attended by Board Members: A meeting with Alderman Gardiner was attended by President Ankney, Scott Legan, Annie Swingen, and Bart Goldberg on July 18th concerning the Clarendale of Portage Park senior development proposed for

Six Corners. Also present were a representative of the owner of the property and the developer of the senior project to answer our questions. As a result of the meeting, the developer supplied us with further information re the construction materials and the Board issued a letter of support for the project to the Adlerman’s office. On July 18th Alderman Gardiner also informed us about preliminary interest in developing the former site of Sabatinos with a project consisting of both storefronts and residential apartment buildings. After reviewing the proposal the Board responded with questions for the developer and answers are forthcoming. President Ankney also

attended meetings with the Six Corners Roundtable, and a community group meeting with new State Senator Ram Villavalam.

Future Meetings: OIPA has renewed our contractual arrangement with St. John’s to continue holding meetings there for the foreseeable future. The next public meeting will be on September 9, 2019 and we hope to present both of our Alderman. Samantha Nugent has confirmed and Jim Gardiner agreed to attend as well. The subjects of our other future public meetings were also discussed, along with planning for our holiday party and even next year’s ice cream social!

This meeting adjourned at 8:38 p.m.

The Irving Park Garden Club will meet Thursday, September 19, to hear a presentation on Water Gardening in Chicago by Dr. Martin Yorath.

He will cover pond basics (design, pumps, and lighting); introducing wildlife (plants and fish); water gardening through the seasons; and protecting against predators.

This program will take place at 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 3857 N. Kostner Ave. This event is free for members; $10 for nonmembers to attend.

In addition to the formal presentation, members will participate in a book/movie/music exchange, thereby clearing some clutter out of their homes and returning with even more. Leftovers will be sold to help fund our annual luncheon in October.

A Summer To Remember

Last month, artist Mary Foster taught a hands-on painting class to 24 aspiring artists, who attempted to recreate a poppy while Mary demonstrated her technique. Also in August, Mike Basile led a group of civic-minded gardeners to tend the Tripp Garden for a much-needed cleanup of that public space.

In July, the club held its popular Midsummer Night Stroll, a wine and cheese social that takes place between two members’ gardens. This year, OIPA president Lynn Ankney and Betsy and Mark McKelvey were the co-hosts. It was an easy stroll as they live next door to each other. They showed us a wonderful time, giving us tours of their gardens and an opportunity to mix and mingle in a relaxed setting.

In June, the club welcomed nearly 100 participants at its annual Garden Walk. This year’s event covered nine gardens between Old Irving Park and the Villa. Refreshments were available at IPGC VP Joe Pintor’s yard, which was the last stop on the tour. Joe’s beautiful garden in the Villa was a perfect spot to rest after the walk, which covered a mile and a half, on a picture-perfect day. Our club continues to grow as the event also brought us seven new members.

We’re the Irving Park Garden Club. We like to dine, drink, and dig. For more information, visit Facebook.com/IrvingParkGardenClub or contact me at [email protected].

Fishman’s Public House (honorary mention just outside of OIP) – they offer a vegetarian charcuterie platter. Plus they have a Beyond burger, a competitor to the Impossible burger that is also gluten free. Fishman’s makes their vegan patties thick and juicy!

Coffee Shops:

Finom Coffee Shop – the first Saturday of the month, they have a vegan bakery pop-up-shop. Patrons can get vegan macaroons & seitan “ham” and vegan cheese pop-tarts, amongst other things. Every day of the week, however, check out their vegan cauliflower toast.

Backlot Coffee Shop– They have dairy-milk alternatives. Their oat milk is thick and creamy and nottoo sweet. Backlot makes a delectable oat milk chai latte. They also have vegan donuts from Do-Rite donuts and vegan breakfast scones.

Dunkin Donuts – Try their iced coffee with almond milk and a mocha swirl (yes, the mocha swirl is vegan!). They also have a Beyond brand vegan sausage patty coming out soon. Stay tuned for that.

AROUND OIPA

Eating out as a vegan or with vegan friends and family is easy in Old Irving Park. Many of our local restaurants and coffee shops offer dairy

and meat alternatives. Here are some local favorites serving up food for vegans or people who can’t consume dairy/eggs.

Breweries:

Old Irving Brewery – the Impossible Burger (a meat-free burger alternative that replicates the look & feel of real meat quite convincingly) and a vegan cheddar alternative on a vegan bun. My husband, who is an omnivore and eats meat, actually prefers the Impossible burger to real beef. It is that good!

Eris Brewery – they have several vegan options. Favorites include their tossed fries with portabella bacon paired with portabella sliders drenched in BBQ sauce on a pretzel bun.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS | Belding School

The Buzz at Belding— Lisa Owens, 4th Grade

Reading/Social Studies Teacher

Construction Update

Belding has been abuzz with construction this summer. A significant renovation of the school (the first addition of new classrooms in more than 100 years) has Belding

gleaming with improvements. Six new classrooms were added in nooks along the east side of Belding. The additional classrooms space allows the Belding preschool to return to the main building after many years of operating in a rented storefront along Irving Park Road. Many ADA accessibility features were added, including ramps, wider doors, and an elevator allowing this beautiful old school with many stairs to be accessible.

Full-Day PreschoolCPS is in the process of transitioning all preschools from half-day to full-day programs, to offer a seat to every four years old in the city by the fall of 2020. Belding’s four half-day classes were converted into two full-day classes with the same amazing staff serving the children in new classrooms in the main building.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS | St. Edward School

Welcome Wednesdays

Join us for our first Welcome Wednesday on September 4, registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the main school building, 4343 W. Sunnyside. Email

[email protected] for more information. Come and see why we give your child so much more than just a seat in the classroom.

Super Makeover

Much of the school has a bright new look thanks to the hard work of Mr. Joesel. Thanks to a generous donation, the school office has received a beautiful makeover. The brickwork on the outside of the main school building has been repaired, and the hallways are brighter than ever with new energy-efficient lighting.

Welcome Back

We welcome back our principal, Mrs. Lasica, from maternity leave. Some of the new changes she has implemented include a positive behavior program: Big Red Big Shots! Our goal is to create a positive culture where students, staff, and parents can thrive. Our positive attitudes and focus on essential qualities and expectations can make a difference for all St. Edward Students. We have expanded our use of i-Ready to kindergarten through eighth grades. This will allow us to focus on individual student needs so that each student has the opportunity for growth during the academic year. We also purchased a new science series for kindergarten through eighth grade, which will have an impact on the learning in this critical area of the curriculum. It’s going to be a great year!

We are a 2017 recipient of the National Blue Ribbon and are located at 4343 W. Sunnyside Avenue. We welcome students in grades PK3 – 8th grade. For more information, please visit our website at www.stedwardschool.com or call us at 773-736-9133.

BBQ Challenge a Huge SuccessThe 6th Annual Old Irving Park Beer & BBQ Challenge was a big success again this year, with over 1,000 tickets sold! All proceeds went to our school and parish. Attendees were from all over the Chicagoland area. We even had several folks who traveled across the country to sample some of the best beer and barbeque around. We were thrilled with the large turnout and the opportunity to show off our amazing St. Viator community. A huge thank you to all who participated, including the BBQ teams, breweries, sponsors, and volunteers. Thanks also to the St. Viator 7th and 8th-grade students, who worked hard all day to earn service hours. We received many compliments on their excellent work and a positive attitude.

will be held Tuesday, September 10 at 1 p.m. at Maple Meadows Golf Course in nearby Wood Dale. Entry is $125 per golfer, which includes greens fees, cart, prizes and dinner. Hole sponsorships are available for $100.

Foursomes at the first annual outing enjoyed a picture-perfect day, competitive golf and good company. Proceeds benefit Carlson Community Services, a 501(c)(3) non-profit which operates three neighborhood programs, an after-school program, community garden and classical music concert series. Boy Scout Jack Haneberg, from Troop 863, will provide the labor to replace a picket cedar fence that was removed in the process of expanding the adjacent parking lot. The garden property is owned by Irving Park Lutheran Church, Carlson’s partner on the project.

garden this season. In past seasons, as much as 900 lbs. of vegetables have been donated to clients of the Irving Park Food Pantry. This summer measures have been taken to restore nutrients to the soil and eradicate pests.

The garden has benefited from several Boy Scout Eagle Scout projects. In fall 2019, Old Irving Park resident Ian McDonald rebuilt the garden’s cedar beds. We are grateful to our Scouts!

Garden volunteers are looking forward to returning the garden to full production in spring 2020. In the meantime, if you’d like to help with garden maintenance throughout the fall, contact Liz Mills at [email protected] or 773.398.6766. Gardeners of all experience levels are welcome. Students in need of service hours find working in the garden with other teens fun and rewarding. The garden is located at 4107 N. NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS | Irving Park Community Food Pantry

Article submitted by Craig Shutt. John Psiharis, Executive Director, Irving Park Community Food Pantry 3801 N. Keeler Ave., Chicago IL 60641 | e-mail: [email protected], Web: www.irvingparkfoodpantry.org.

To let our supporters see our new home and introduce ourselves to our new neighbors, the Pantry is holding an open house from 10 a.m. to

noon on October 19. Executive Director John Psiharis, board members and many volunteers will be on hand to show off the facility and the Pantry’s new operations.

We want to thank all of the volunteers who put in many hours strategizing, planning and helping in many ways to ensure the move to our new location goes smoothly. We especially want to thank Pastor Audrey Molina, Assistant Pastor Jesus Molina and the Emanuel UMC congregation for their support.

If you are interested in volunteering at our new location, please contact our Volunteer Managers at [email protected] . To make a donation to help fund the move visit www.irvingparkfoodpantry.org.

New to the Board

The Pantry is pleased to announce that it has added two new board members to fill open seats from earlier resignations. The new members are Pam Voitik, a volunteer in our Pet Food Corner who also works with the Community Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) on the North Shore, and Craig Shutt, the Pantry’s Publicity Coordinator and 2019 Volunteer of the Year.

We look forward to working with them and welcome their contributions to our planning efforts.

Pantry Plans Open House in New Location!

More Good News and Gratitude

The Pantry has been approved by Petco Foundation to be a community partner. Stores are now able to partner with us for donations, collections, or other activities.

Thank you to the volunteers from Sow Chicago, Highland Baptist Youth Group, and GenSend missions who volunteered this summer at the Pantry. We enjoyed visiting with these young people from around the country and letting them learn about the Pantry.

Thank you to Isabel Navarro, who contacts corporations with neighborhood stores to ask for donations. She brought in boxes of noodles, baby food, diapers and large bottles of shampoo this month. We appreciate everyone who contributes time, effort, and money to help us meet our mission of being “Neighbors Helping Neighbors!”

Pictured above is the Irving Park Community Food Pantry new location Emanuel United Methodist Church, 4256 N. Ridgeway, 60618. The Pantry will continue to serve its clients in the 60641 and western half of 60618 ZIP codes from this new location during its usual hours: Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon and on the second Tuesday night of every month from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
