The Pie Cabinet opening in October in the location vacated by Tumbleweeds Restaurant, you’ll find Michael Lutch Ward involved in a new restaurant and pie bakery. Dake & Gerrie Warren are renovating the historic Villa House on the corner of Tegner and Yavapai, you’ll soon find it open as Rusty Rooster. When open in October you’ll find a variety of relics, jew-elry, art and much more. The Mecca is under construction hoping to open in the fall with a new place for dining along with exterior revitalization of the Mecca Shops. Across the street Rancho Bar 7 will be undergoing exterior upgrades soon. Recently Tony Pratt rented the vacant space on Valentine Street just down from Anita’s Cocina and Farm Bureau Insurance. A long-time commercial space next door to the Best Western Rancho Grande has sold and will become a Micro-Brewery & Eatery. The Town of Wickenburg recently purchased two vacant lots on south Valentine Street to create much needed parking for the down-town. A positive business buzz is happening this summer with private investment being made downtown on the west side of town. They include Creations in Thread owner Bobbi Brooks adding more merchandise to her store, along with exciting retail plans in the near future. Lydia’s La Canasta in West Plaza Shopping Center recently opened a second location on the east side of Wickenburg Way and the corner of El Recreo, called Lydia’s La Canasta Express. El Ranchero Mexican Restaurant purchased a new mobile food trailer, brightly decorated and ready to roll. The Limon Familia is also expanding at their present location – coming soon. Downtown you’ll find construction underway by Stephen Bennett, owner of Kool Kovers who recently purchased The Cutting Edge Frame & Gallery which will occupy the old Chaparral building, along with Antiques & Collectibles and consignment space. The business name is Picture Perfect Framing & Antiques, his daughter Kalee Bennett is the owner/Manager. Cactus Maddy’s Mercantile on Yavapai Street is a terrific store with antiques and collectibles, owners Sandra & Bob Fuller leased adjacent space recently vacated to include their new Old Time Photo Studio. Next door is Sweet Somethings & What Knots, owner Cathy Fitzpatrick expanded next door to her original loca-tion which increased the floor space, provided open display of beautiful gifts, wedding items, and small selection of clothing, children’s items and unique jewelry. Old Livery Mercantile, owners Brett & Marianne Gerasim have added more merchandise to their large inventory of books, clothing, southwest items, wall décor, lamps and so much more. New to the Hyder Block you’ll find Brooke Walters and Pottery B. creating beautiful pottery, special designs and unique gifts. Brooke leased the space after Dana Black retired and closed her store Casa Ranchera. Claudia Conly owner of Danny’s Jewelry remodeled the store for an attractive open space for displaying her inventory of jewelry. On north Tegner you’ll find Sandi’s Boutique, owner Sandi Taylor recently expanded into a nearby building to add to her retail and antique store. Event Planning UnderwayTwo new events have been approved by the chamber board of directors for implementation in April 2016. They include: Wickenburg Vintage, Antiques & Collectibles Marketplace, and two weeks later, a Wickenburg Wedding Expo. Both events will take place at the Wickenburg Community Center. Mark your calendar for April 16 and April 30, 2016. Vendor information and other details will be available by August 1.

Chamber University – Lunch and Learn

The Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce will host on Sept. 23-25 chambers from across Arizona at their fall conference. Participants will be staying in hotel rooms, eating and shopping locally. Our staff submitted a bid

for the conference late last year and has been planning for the conference with ACE representa-tives. The Chamber Board and Past Presidents will be present at the Wednesday evening welcome reception.

Arizona Chamber Executives meet in Wickenburg

It was exciting this week to receive our ACT test results and to see that the number students taking the test has increased over the past three years and that the scores are climbing. In addition, it was won-derful to note that our students beat state average in all tested areas (English, math, reading, science and combined score or composite) and that they also scored above national average. We believe these results are a function of the ACT Quality Core curriculum and end of course exams we now use at WHS. The curriculum is designed to make students college and career ready and to meet the requirements of the Grand Canyon Diploma (GCD). If students meet the requirements of the GCD they are then eligible to attend community college for free at school district expense. Furthermore, they can complete their community college degree on the WHS campus in the Move On When Ready Learning Lab which was funded by the Wellik Foundation and continue to be involved in all normal high school activities (i.e. sports, clubs, arts programming…etc.). As we continue to refine the curriculum, instruction and assessment system at WHS over the next five years we should see greater and greater growth among our students. We know that we are preparing students for an ever changing workplace and there-fore it is imperative that they master certain basic concepts, skills and processes. It is a work in progress, but again, nice to see that students are experiencing an upward trend. Below is a chart which displays WUSD’s ACT results so that you can see these data in graphical form.
