Harvey Cox was the Hollis Professor of Divinity at the Harvard School of Divinity until his retirement in 2009. In his book, The Future of Faith (New York Harper One, 2009) Cox emphasized the distinction between what we believe and the faith we live. He wrote, “We may believe that something is in fact true, yet we place our faith in things that are vital to our life!”

Faith goes beyond the hope of something we believe is true but cannot see. Faith is the energy of right now. Faith is hope embodied. It is the willingness to see the life of Jesus, or Francis of Assisi, or Mother Teresa and countless others, on a visual plane and therefore the change of heart necessary to live a life of intentional purpose.

We can express a faith which is more than holding onto particular beliefs. We can define a lifestyle important to us, sustain it with vital fellowships, guide it by other people of faith who are able to reflect hope in the here and now. Therefore, the next time someone inquires what we think, or what we believe, a great response might be to show rather than debate.

Blessings,

New members and drop-ins are always welcome. As we begin our third year, we continue to write about the large and small moments in our lives that draw us closer to our Creator. This year, we will be using ideas from several books as prompts:

There is no book purchase required for those who choose to come and write. Our fall writing sessions will be September 12 and 19, October 3, 10, 17, 31, and November 7,14 and 21. Sign-up is available at the welcome center. For more information, contact Julie Bailey at 303-688-9241 or [email protected].

WOMEN’S SPIRITUAL RETREAT ATTENTION ALL WOMEN

Save the Date!! October 23-24, 2015

Led by Reverend Sarah and Reverend Brenda

Most of us lead pretty busy lives, even in retirement! This retreat offers women a time away to ‘find our quiet center’ through the practice of ‘lexio divina,’ a prayerful reading of scripture. Of course, there will also be time for fun, food, and fellowship with other women on the journey. Cost is $80.

There are brochures with additional information and a registration form at the welcome desk. Please also sign up at the welcome desk if you would like to attend.

STEPHEN MINISTRY

WHAT IS STEPHEN MINISTRY? Stephen Ministry is a way congregations can provide high-quality care and outreach to hurting people in the congregation and community. StephenMinisters are congregation members who have gone through 50 hours of training to provide one-to-one, Christ-centered care. Each Stephen Minister is matched with a hurting person—men are paired with men, women with women—and meet every week with that person to listen, care, pray, and encourage. Stephen Ministers care for those dealing with grief, divorce, job loss, hospitalization, financial struggles, loneliness, convalescence, terminal illness, and many other life difficulties. It is a privilege and a blessing to be a Stephen Minister serving our church family and our community.

Please celebrate with us in welcoming four wonderful new Stephen Ministers who will join the team by being commissioned on September 6th at all three services.

Lisa Andrews, Rose Andrade, Joe Gschwendtner, Brianna Smith

If you or someone you know, can benefit from this type of Christian companionship, please let Reverend Rob or Reverend Sarah know or call the Stephen Minister referral coordinator, Cheryl Smith at 303 660-5568.

GREAT FOOD & FUN ACTIVITIES FOR THE KIDS

WOMEN’S SPIRITUALITY GROUP

The Women’s Spirituality Group will start again on Wednesdays from 9:30 – 11:00 on October 28. This session will be based on Joyce Rupp’s book, “The Cup of Our Life.” The sessions will run until December 9 and will be led by Rev. Brenda Lear.

Joyce Rupp says this about “The Cup of our Life”: “The ordinariness of the cup reminds me that my personal transformation occurs in the common crevices of each day. The cup is an apt image for the inner processes of growth. The cup has been a reminder of my spiritual thirst. As I’ve held it, filled it, drunk from it, emptied it and washed it, I’ve learned that it is through my ordinary human experiences that my thirst for God is quenched. In the cup I see life, with its emptiness, fullness, brokenness, flaws, and blessings.”

CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP September 12 - 6:30pm

Christian Fellowship kicks off the new program year on Saturday evening, September 12 with a report from the youth on their outreach missions this past summer.

In June, eight of our youth and three leaders attended a National Gathering of Youth in Orlando, Florida. The United Methodist Performers (UMPS) and other church youth participated with 6,500 other attendees.

In July, other youth in our church participated in a local area four-day Urban Plunge mission sponsored by Denver Urban Ministries. Working with other non-profits such as Brothers Rehabilitation, Food Bank of the Rockies, and the Denver Rescue Mission, the group served others while learning about homelessness and poverty.

Josh Hay and other participants will report on these activities at our September 12 meeting which starts with a pot luck dinner in Fellowship Hall at 6:30 p.m. All church attendees are invited to the dinner and to listen to the mission details.
