We’re delighted to welcome the newly formed Britten-Shostakovich Festival Orchestra on its UK-Russian tour(Thu 19 Sep) – a fitting prelude to Leeds International Orchestral Season in which highlights include the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yuri Simonov (Sat 5 Oct) and Sir Mark Elder conducting The Hallé and James Ehnes in Bruch’s Violin Concerto (Sat 12 Oct). Miloš Karadaglić is guitar soloist in Rodrigo’s much loved Concierto de Aranjuez with the Flanders Symphony Orchestra (Sat 2 Nov), and the city’s own Orchestra of Opera North presents a stunning programme of Janáček’s Sinfonietta and Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle(Sat 30 Nov).

There’s a feast of comedy including Ben Elton (Wed 16 Oct), Lenny Henry (Tue 29 Oct), and Josh Widdicombe (Wed 11 Dec). Not surprisingly, the fantastic Eddie Izzard (Thu 17 & Fri 18 Oct) sold out before going to press, but you are welcome to join the waiting list for any last minute tickets.

Our music programme goes from strength to strength with Lloyd Cole (Tue 15 Oct), Oysterband and June Tabor (Fri 1 Nov), Sophie Ellis-Bextor (Sun 24 Nov), Dweezil Zappa (Tue 10 Dec) and Christmas programmes from G4 (Wed 27 Nov) and the ever popular Kate Rusby (Fri 13 Dec). Plus, the Orchestra of Opera North presents Bowie: A Rock and Symphonic Spectacular (Fri 25 Oct), and its sparkling New Year Viennese Whirl(Sun 29 Dec).

St Gemma’s Hospice and Leeds Symphony Orchestra bring their own Night at the Proms to Leeds Town Hall with a fantastic evening of popular pieces from The Greatest Showman, Puccini opera arias, traditional pieces including Jerusalem and Rule Britannia and Elgar’s Nimrod, along with the Proms flag-waving finale Land of Hope and Glory, featuring classical guitarist Craig Ogden, and a special performance from the St Gemma’s Hospice Choir.

All proceeds from the concert will go to the Hospice to help the continuing provision of expert care and support for those with life-limiting illnesses, and their friends, families and carers.

Tchaikovsky’s Slavonic March features Serbian folk songs, Russian dances, and the Russian national anthem of those who volunteered in the Serbo-Turkish conflict.

After resurfacing from deep depression and writer’s block, Rachmaninov dedicated his second piano concerto to his neurologist. The rapturous work has found its way into many a film score and pop song, notably in Eric Carmen’s power ballad All by Myself.

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is arguably the world’s most popular ballet, full of great melodies and dances from the fairy tale story of a princess’ triumph over a sorcerer’s curse. The score has made it to countless soundtracks, from the Lemmings video game to the 2010 blockbuster Black Swan starring Natalie Portman.

Khachaturian’s Gayaneh is a 1940s Armenian ‘Soviet-folk’ ballet, with a beautifully cinematic score that featured in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001:A Space Odessey.

LLOYD COLEFROM RATTLESNAKESTO GUESSWORK 2019 TOURPre-eminent singer-songwriter Lloyd Cole heads out on tour following the release of his latest album Guesswork. The album mirrors the uncertainty of the world as you enter your third act, and is consistent with a record whose protagonists seem reluctant to venture confidently beyond the moment. In terms of minutes it’s his longest, but in terms of songs it’s shorter than any of his previous eleven solo albums. This might come as a surprise to those who primarily remember Lloyd for the precocious literary pop dispatches of 1984’s Rattlesnakes, the debut album which earned him an unlikely place alongside Wham! and Duran Duran in the following year’s Smash Hits/Panini sticker book.

Finzi The Fall of the LeafBruch Violin Concerto No 1Elgar Symphony No 1

The existing piano score of The Fall of the Leaf was only partially orchestrated when Finzi died in 1956. Completed by a friend and fellow composer of Finzi’s, the work is elegiac in nature, evokes the English countryside, and stirs listeners much like Holst’s Saturn does.

Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1 was his most successful work and is ever popular today, twice being voted No 1 in Classic FM’s Hall of Fame. The concerto opens with a dazzling first movement that leads seamlessly into an oasis of calm, before closing with a rousing Hungarian-style finale.

The Hallé’s 1908 premiere of Elgar’s Symphony No 1 in Manchester was a massive success; within weeks performances would be heard throughout the world – pre-internet! The patriotic symphony has found its way into some unlikely places, including the 2005 Wallace and Gromit film, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

Upon graduating, Prokofiev began writing his Symphony No 1 in the style of Haydn, saying“...if Haydn were writing today... he would keep to his way of writing, whilst at the same time incorporating newer ideas. I wanted to compose just such a symphony.”

Mozart’s 25th piano concerto is one of his most expansive, weaving themes from the orchestra into the intricate solo part. The first movement seems to quote the French national anthem which, strangely, wasn’t yet composed, leading some to believe this concerto could have been its inspiration.

On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring is a fine example of Bradford-born Delius’ inspiration by all things nature; a hazy atmospheric sound-world depicting a forest. Listen out for the cuckoo calls at the beginning and end of the piece.

Haydn’s Symphony No 104 was the final symphony he composed – of the premier in London Haydn wrote in his diary “The whole company was thoroughly pleased and so was I. I made 4000 gulden on this evening: such a thing is possible only in England!”. The symphony closes with a spirited finale conjuring the cries of London street vendors.

Anna Clyne MasqueradeSaint-Saëns Cello Concerto No 1Mahler Symphony No 5

British-born composer Anna Clyne’s Masquerade is a six-minute orchestral whirlwind inspired by promenade concerts amid the chaos of the 18th century London Pleasure Gardens. Spiralling strings recur, depicting exotic street performers and fireworks, alongside the popular drinking song The Juice of The Barley – in other words, beer!

Saint-Saëns was a child prodigy in composing and piano. His first cello concerto was premiered in 1872 at the traditionalist Paris Conservatoire, marking his recognition as a composer. The concerto opens with a fiery call and response between the orchestra and soloist, followed by an unusual minuet middle movement which leads straight into a virtuosic finale.

Mahler composed his fifth symphony recovering from a major haemorrhage, during which time he met his future wife Alma Schindler. The piece reflects his near-death in an opening trumpet fanfare and funeral march. Later an Adagietto of true beauty appears, which was Mahler’s love letter to Alma. Of his ten symphonies, the fifth is today considered one of his strongest.

AN EVENING WITHLENNY HENRYWHO AM I, AGAIN?Lenny Henry is one of Britain’s best-known and celebrated comedians, with a career which spans cult stardom on children’s television to writer, radio DJ, TV presenter, co-founder of Comic Relief, and award-winning actor.

In the first half of the evening, Lenny takes the audience through a jam session of funny and sad memories and stories – from growing up in the Black Country, puberty, school, friendship, family secrets and unashamed racism. With his mother’s mantra of ‘H’integration’ echoing in his ears, Lenny recounts setting out on his rollercoaster ride of a career – but at every stage wondering: Am I good enough? Is this what they want?

In part two, Lenny will be interviewed by friend, broadcaster and author Jon Canter, for further insights into his life and career, followed by questions from the audience. OYSTERBAND &JUNE TABORFIRE & FLEET TOUROne of the most exciting collaborations in folk music, June Tabor and Oysterband, resume this autumn for a major tour. With separate distinguished careers to pursue, their appearances together are necessarily rare, so this is a must-see opportunity to catch them live.

The majesty and control of June’s voice combine with the passion of John Jones’ singing and the dynamic drive of Oysterband to illuminate dark traditional ballads and contemporary classics alike – witness their moving duet version of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart, widely regarded as the best-ever reinterpretation of that much-covered track. The overture from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville features his much-loved ‘Rossini crescendos’, where the overexcited music gets louder and faster at the same time until it can’t go on any longer.

Rodrigo’s stunning guitar concerto Concierto de Aranjuez was famously played by Grimethorpe Colliery Band in the 1996 film Brassed Off as ‘Concerto d’Orange Juice’.

Villa Lobos’ Three Preludes for solo guitar are inspired by Brazilian folk music, conjuring warm weather and sunny beaches.

In contrast, De Falla’s El Amor Brujo is a ballet whose dramatic score tells of a love haunted by the supernatural past.

Finally, Bizet’s orchestral suite from Carmen; the tempestuous story of an irresistible Spanish woman that ends in tragedy – arguably the most popular opera ever written.

SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTORTHE SONG DIARIESAs one of British music’s most recognised and distinctive vocalists, the only question must be why the mix of Sophie Ellis-Bextor alongside a sumptuous live orchestra hasn’t happened sooner. Following live performances with orchestra and band for the first time at the Royal Festival Hall last year, Ellis-Bextor performs orchestral versions of her hits across the UK and Ireland in 2019.

Since the release of her two million copy-selling debut album Read My Lips in 2001, Ellis-Bextor’s Top 10 singles have included Take Me Home, Get Over You, Murder on the Dancefloor and her collaboration with Spiller Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love) which catapulted her into the music scene and was the most played record on UK radio between 2000 and 2010.

Elgar The Kingdom

The Kingdom follows The Apostles as the second part of a trilogy Elgar left unfinished, recounting the story of the disciples, Pentecost and the descent of the Holy Spirit. It opens with an extensive orchestral prelude, setting the scene for the undeniable wonder evoked by the story – whether or not the music falls on religious ears.

Modelled on JS Bach’s Passions, the tale is recounted by four soloists; the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, St Peter and St John, all still reeling from the events of Easter in The Apostles. In Manchester Collective’s largest and most ambitious programme to date, Edmund Finnis’ music is both beautiful and strange.

Following its premiere at the Southbank Centre in London, The Centre is Everywhere, written for twelve solo string players, features “iridescent and compelling” music (The Guardian).

An unholy mashup of Ligeti’s Métamorphosen nocturnes and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, performed by Manchester Collective’s very own Rakhi Singh, precede Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosen. This emotionally devastating work, composed in the ruins of Dresden during the closing months of the second world war, is a piece Manchester Collective has wanted to play for a long time – a real ‘Mount Everest’ for string players.

DWEEZIL ZAPPAHOT RATS LIVE!PLUS OTHER HOT STUFF 1969Dweezil Zappa and his ‘rocking teenage combo’ perform his father Frank Zappa’s entire Hot Rats album in sequence live on stage. Dweezil has long undertaken a mission to re-acquaint the world with the sights and sounds of his infamous father and this incredibly talented group of musicians revives Frank’s music in a fresh context, whilst keeping true to Zappa Snr’s unique and impeccable sonic heritage.

Hot Rats album played a pivotal role in establishing Frank Zappa as a composer and guitarist and was also dedicated to the new-born Dweezil upon its release in 1969. The 50-year-old classic album will be surrounded by an assortment of other psychedelic, avant-garde, odd-metered toe-tappers well known to Zappa aficionados and equally exciting for fans new to his music.

Janáček SinfoniettaBartók Duke Bluebeard’s Castle

Janáček was inspired to write his Sinfonietta after hearing a marching band in his hometown. The resulting work is an orchestral tour de force which opens with huge brass and percussion sections, featuring scores of fanfares amid the streets of Brno. Bursting with pride at his newly-formed Czechoslovakia, Janáček dedicated the work to the Czechoslovak Army.

Duke Bluebeard’s Castle is Bartók’s one act opera based on the French fairy tale Barbe bleu, starring just Bluebeard and his new wife Judith as the entire cast. According to folklore Judith arrives at Bluebeard’s castle and agrees to stay the night, during which she persuades Bluebeard to unlock seven secret doors, each revealing their horrors one by one. The fifth door summons the orchestra to perform the brightest rays of sunshine that are revealed behind it. The original story has a happy ending as Judith is rescued just in time, but Bartók’s version has a more sinister ending...

A quartet of top soloists joins the English Chamber Orchestra and Leeds Festival Chorus in Handel’s Messiah, one of the greatest choral works ever written. Handel’s response to these words is truly sublime, from the calm of the Pastoral Symphony, through the heartfelt I know that my redeemer liveth, to the Heaven-storming Hallelujah chorus. With such instantly memorable tunes it is hardly surprising that the Messiah has been a firm favourite with audiences ever since its first performance in 1742.
