BUZZIFIEDSFirst human case o West NileVirus confrmed in Montana Te Yellowstone City-County Health Department andthe Montana Department o Public Health and HumanServices are reporting the rst human case o West Nile Virus(WNV) in Yellowstone County and in Montana or 2013.

Te case was diagnosed at a Billings hospital andconrmed last week. Te patient, a Yellowstone Countyemale resident in her ies, did not require hospitalizationand is expected to ully recover. Te individual had no historyo travel outside the state within the past month.

West Nile Virus is most commonly ound in peopleover 50 years old, but every Montanan should be takingprecautionary measures to help prevent WNV inection, said DPHHS Director Richard Opper.

In the U.S. this year, 497 human cases o WNV have beenreported to the Centers or Disease Control and Prevention.O these cases, twenty have died.

Te rst indication o the presence o WNV in Montanathis year occurred in mid-July when mosquitoes with WNVwere ound in Prairie County. Te rst WNV positive birdwas also detected at that time in Sheridan County. Horseswith WNV inection were reported in late August romcounties in central and eastern parts o the state.

Most people who become inected with WNVexperience no symptoms. Some individuals may develop amild illness, called West Nile ever, which may last or threeto six days. Other individuals, ewer than 1 out o 150, may

be come severely inected with West Nile encephalitis orWest Nile meningitis. Symptoms o this disease may includeheadache, rash, high ever, sti neck, mental conusion, muscle weakness, tremors, convulsions, coma and paralysis.Tere is not available treatment or WNV inection otherthan supportive care. Individuals who develop any o thesesymptoms should see their healthcare provider.

DPHHS reminds Montanans to take precautions andprotect against West Nile Virus by ollowing the 5 Ds oWNV prevention. Te 5 Ds include: DUSK/DAWN - mosquitoes are most active during this time.

If possible, stay indoors during the early morning and evening

    hours.

If you must be outdoors when mosquitoes are most active,DRESS in long sleeves and pants.

Before going outdoors, remember to apply an insect repellentcontaining 25 to 35 % DEET when outdoors. Children ages

2-12 should use repellent with 10 percentDEET

or less.DEET is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention and is the most effective and best studied

insect repellent available. Products containing picaridin andpermethrin have also been found to be effective in repelling

mosquitoes, as has oil of lemon eucalyptus.

To keep the mosquito population at bay around your home,

DRAIN standing water in old tires, barrels, buckets, cans,

clogged rain gutters, and other items that collect water. Change

Theyre aluminum, but they wont bend! Remember, its all molded at least thick. Thats Darren Blades of Aluminum Critters & More taking a quick resizes range from life size to desktop items at a range from $9 up to $3,350what that chicken was worth. But r eally, did you see the size of that chicken

Driving by the VFW reminded me of the movie Young Guns(cameout in 1988) when they they were seeking for direction (all messed up)on those peyote buds: Did you guys see the size of that chicken?!?

Darren Blades puts the nishing touches on an aluminum buffalo. You cant paing

aluminum without a chemical treatment, Darren Blades explaine. While these pieceswill last for generations, if they are outdoors they may need a little touch-up withsome Rust-Oleum paint every four or ve years or so, and theyre good to go. (These

aluminum sculptures wont rust, but Rust-Oleum is the paint used. Darren will eventrain you in minutes as to how to care for your outdoor critters. This striped little fella stands out in the crowd.
