Athletic Department Goals2. OBJECTIVE II: In support of a diverse campus environment, recruit academically qualified student-

athletes, without bias or prejudices, who are fully integrated in the campus community and who

graduate at a rate comparable to all students.

a. The academic and demographic profile of freshman student-athletes shall not deviate

significantly from that of all students.

• The middle 50% SAT score for all incoming freshmen in Fall 2009 was 1260-1430; and for freshmen

student-athletes, scores were 1110-1290. The mean SAT was 1395 for all freshmen compared to 1200

for student-athletes.

• Demographically, females represent 54.4% of the student body, and 45.3% of the student athletes.

25% of the student body is comprised of racial/ethnic minorities, and 16.5% of student athletes

b. The NCAA graduation rate for student-athletes shall be within 5% points of the comparable

rate for all students and the rate calculated for student-athletes who have exhausted eligibility

shall be 100%.

• The graduation rate for the 2002-03 cohort was 91% for the overall student body of the college, and

87% for student athletes. The four year class average was 91% and 86%, respectively.

• The student athlete graduation success rate is 95%.

c. The NCAA Academic Progress Report rate for each individual sport should be above 950 and

all sports at or above the 80 percentile mark for their sport.

• All sports multi-year APR (Academic Progress Rate) (2005/06-2008/09) ranged from 958 to 1000.

Six sports programs achieved 80% percentile rank or better within their respective sport (Baseball,

Football, Men’s Gymnastics, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Gymnastics, Women’s Track and Field).

Athletic Department Goals3. OBJECTIVE III: Contribute to the strength and diversity of the campus through the recruitment

and retention of highly qualified coaches and staff who value the William and Mary experience.

a. Create and distribute a standard charge to all search committees that notes the departmental

priority for an open search process that mandates consideration of equity and diversity in the

review and selection process.

There were 18 position searches conducted in 2009-10. Of those, 10 were modified or waived. Of the 10

modified or waived searches, five were waived (four PT positions became FT, and one FT was hired quickly

based on dept. need). As of Aug. 17, 2010, there were four searches underway: one a full search, and three

modified searches.

b. All department personnel rated effective in their position in the annual review process.

Review and Evaluation process completed Jan/Feb, 2010

4. OBJECTIVE IV: Maintain fiscal responsibility through conscientious budget management and

coordinated efforts to increase annual and endowment funds in support of athletics.

a. Budget managed to assure an annual balanced fiscal position.

• We ended the fiscal year with a surplus.

b. Meet the annual revenue goals in all budget areas.

• W&M Athletics exceeded revenue budgets in all operating categories. Due to expense savings in some

areas, combined with higher than budgeted revenues in all other areas, we did not need as much Tribe

Club funding as originally budgeted. That funding was available if needed, and will be retained in the

appropriate Tribe Club accounts. Private support of athletics to increase by a 5 year average of 7%,

exclusive of capital projects.

c. Long range, 20 year goal, to endow the expense for athletic grants-in-aid.

• Endowment revenue funded 36.4% of actual F09 GIA expenses.

b. Create a game day atmosphere which emphasizes family entertainment, a fun environment for W&M

students, and mandates good sportsmanship from all participants and spectators.

• Created the Tribal Fever athletics fan club for students. Over 300 members in the first year and coordinated

trips to several away games.

• Added a kid zone to football games and made plans for implementation for other sports.

• Re-enforce our sportsmanship policy in programs and PA announcements for all games.

c. Where possible, increase awareness of athletic events through the coordination of scheduling with other

campus activities to attract broad interest.

• The Schedule Committee meets regularly with this goal in mind.
