A brand new school year is upon us and that means the Ultimate season has begun! The excitement and expectations of this year are unlike any before. Last year was the Nomads most successful season to date; it was full of highlights such as beating Appalachian State’s reunion team for the first time in Nomads history and placing an all-time high Second in the Chucktown Throwdown tournament. While last season was great and full of excitement, there is no describing the heights that the team can climb to this year. We, as a team, graduated only three players from last year and at our first practice on Monday we had around 30 new freshmen that came out. By the looks of it, the majority of them are looking to stay. The season will start with our first tournament: Club Sectionals on September 17th and 18th. This tournament will take place in Greenville, NC. It is going to be fun to see how our team will do especially the new guys, we will however be without three of our best players, [Spencer Olmstead, Micah Hood, and Justin Allen] as they will be representing the club team Cash Crop and we wish them the best of luck. Again this season I feel is going to exceed the standards set from last year as we continue the push to being one of the best teams in the state.

Women’s Club Soccer here at ASU cannot wait to start this fall season! We have all returning officers and we all know this year will be even better than the last! We had a great turn out from Club Expo and UREC fest by having almost 100 new girls interested in playing! We have six scheduled games for this semester, including a double header here at home with James Madison University and Wake Forest. Come out and support us! We also have one tournament planned at Virginia Tech for later on in the semester. We’re hoping to compete hard this semester and come out with a winning season, and maybe even a win in the Virginia Tech tournament! If you’re interested in playing and didn’t get a chance to make it to the club expo you can email our secretary, Emily Verdu, and she will get you on the email list at [email protected], or we will start practice September 6th from 8-10 pm at State Farm Fields, and will practice there (weather permitting) on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8-10 pm at State Farm Fields.

App State Swimming is finally getting back into the full swing of things. We had an amazing turn out at our first meeting this week thanks to the publicity from UREC Fest, Club Expo and Welcome Weekend. Over 140 new people said they were interested in swimming with us this year and we hope they are all just as excited as we are. Our first official practice is September 6th and we practice Mondays - Thursdays 6-8m at the SRC. We also have a coach this year who will be attending several practices a week to help us improve as swimmers.

We are planning our first home meet of the year for October 1st and plan on traveling to Elon University on November 5th for the fall championships.

The swim club has several new officers this year who are excited to see the swim team grow and unify as a team. Our officers are:

Amanda Gray - PresidentRita Welder - Vice PresidentThomas Drye - Treasurer Dan Wallace - SecretaryMaureen O’Donnell - CaptainMike Jenkins - Coach

We are excited about all the interest in the swim team this year and hope to improve as a team throughout the year. As a team, we would like to improve our individual times and relay times to be even more competitive for our national meet at Georgia Tech, which hosts over 50 teams from across the nation. This should be a great year for App State Swim and we are ready to kick things off Tuesday, September 6th with our first official practice!

This year we have a new website as well as a twitter account. Check us out at www.asuswim.com and www.twitter.com/asuswim

AHO Women’s Rugby wants to thank everyone who came out, supported us, and signed up at Welcome Weekend, Club Expo, and UREC Fest. We had over 85 people sign up and saw close to 30 new recruits at our informational meeting. If you missed us and are still interested in joining us this semester it’s not too late. Send the team an email at [email protected] and come out to practice at the State Farm Fields Tuesday-Thursday from 6-8pm. Rugby is a great sport and no experience is necessary--you will learn everything you need to know to play safely and competitively. We would love to see you out there!

Practices started on August 29th and this year is off to an amazing start! At our first practice we saw a lot of enthusiasm from our new players and great commitment to the game from our returning players. Our second practice was equally good. In the next few weeks we will be working hard to get ready to play against the Virginia Tech womens team in Blacksburg VA on September 10th. Other teams that we play this semester include the University of South Carolina, University of Tennessee, Duke, UNCG, and Clemson. If this isn’t enough, we, along with the men’s rugby team, host the Rucktoberfest tournament each year. Rucktoberfest is an event that you won’t want to miss!

To look at pictures, find out game dates, and find out more about the great women on our team check out our website at www.ahowomensrugby.com. You can also find us on Facebook!

This year we have all new officers along with two new coaches. Our new President is Jack Gibbs, he is a Junior this year and has played at App State for two years after coming from Christopher Newport University where he played Division III lacrosse. Our Vice President is Derek Chamberlin who also is a Junior who is from Atlanta where he played lacrosse in high school. Our Secretary, Scott Murphy, is also a Junior who is also from Atlanta where he played lacrosse throughout high school. Seth Flynn is the Treasurer on the team and will be a Senior this year, who has played throughout his college career. We hope to come out strong and have a winning season this year. We hope to show other schools that we are a serious team and are someone they will want to play against. With our two new coaches we feel that his year will be one of our best, we hope along with the new incoming players and coaches we will be very successful. At Club Expo we cam in contact with many new potential players and hope that they will become part of our team. Not only did we get interest players but a good amount of people were just interested in watching some of our games, which is always a good thing. This year we hope to host a tournament at App and also hope to participate in some. The ultimate goal for this year and every year is to make it to the SELC play offs in Atlanta and also make it to the MCLA championship. Everyone is looking forward to this year and hoping for the best.

ASU Cycling Team After a super successful debut in our first season as a Division 1 team, the App State Cycling Team is back at it and ramping up for what should be our best season ever! The team returns almost every single rider from a year ago that saw the team finish 6th overall in the final national standings (2nd best club team in the country) which combines both varsity and club teams. The mountain bike team will be lead by Senior downhill/dual slalom racer Craig Folsom who is predicted to have a top ten finish at this years mountain bike nationals. Also two-time cyclocross national champion Ashley James is the favorite to win the short track race at this years nationals (she also went to Europe twice this summer with the US Women’s National Team and is heading back for a third time in September with the team for a week long stage race). Other important returnees will be Clayton Omer who finished 4th at the 2009 nationals in California and Zeb King and James Witter who both were the top finishers for the team in the cross country race and short track race last year in California. Nina Laughlin should be the team’s dark horse in the women’s races this year at nationals since she didn’t race mountain bikes this time last year. The team will be doing six conference races with the conference championships being hosted by West Virginia University then two weeks later the team will travel to Angel Fire, New Mexico for the National Championships from October 28-30. Following the mountain bike season, the team will shift to cyclocross season with the goal to win the 2011 Cyclocross National Championships in Madison, Wisconsin from January 3-7. Last years nationals team of Clayton Omer, Reid Beloni, Alex Ryan, Zeb King, Jacob Florence, Justin Evans, Ashley James, Rachel VandenEnde and Bridgette McClean will all be returning and looking to improve from last years fourth place finish. Ashley James will look to repeat her individual women’s national championship from a year ago as well. Finally in the spring the team will look to repeat as the conference champions and again have a chance to win the national championships. The men’s national runner-up team time trial of Reid Beloni, Clayton Omer, Andre Vandenburg and Nick Inabinet will all be returning and looking to turn their silver medal into a gold. Nick Inabinet will also try to win the gold in the criterium at nationals after losing the gold by one-one hundredth of a second this past year. Ashley James will also try to better her 3rd place finish in the womens road race. The team will travel to Ogden, Utah for the collegiate road nationals in May, which will be a very hilly course at altitude that should suit the team perferctly. All together it should be a crazy good year for the Mountaineer cycling team with all the returning talent and all of the incoming talent as well. Not only will the team look to be the best club team in the country but the team will look to also beat out all the varsity programs as well!

The Appalachian State Ice Hockey team is looking forward to having a competitive season this year in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference. Mike Skelton and Steven Rausch, entering their 3rd season with the team, take over as President and Vice President. Looking forward to their 4th year with the team are Noel Herland and Derek Mars who take on the roles of Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. As the season approaches, the team looks forward to once again reaching for the playoffs and hope to repeat the 2009-10 season where they took home the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference Championship.

With a promising turnout thanks to the club expo, the ice hockey team has added a group of incoming players that give the team great potential as the season starts in less than a month. The Mountaineers ice hockey team will kick off their season September 23rd against UNC-Chapel Hill and will travel throughout the season playing teams such as UNCC, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Wake Forest, VCU, Duke, and many others. Despite all the travel, the team consists of dedicated hockey players that are determined to bring the BRHC Championship back to Appalachian State.

ASU Hunt Seat coach Sarah Klassett and Morgan Oliver at Zones 2011.

The ASU Equestrian Team's year has started off great! Our 2nd Annual Open House went awesome and had 30+ potential members attend along with a great group of returning members. We also had enough support and interest from new members to add a Western team, in addition to the Hunt Seat and Dressage teams.

Last spring we had 5 riders qualify for Regionals (the most in ASU history!): MC Robertson, Katie Sedlmeyer, Caitlin Patton, Rachel Kester, and Morgan Oliver. Morgan Oliver was then the first ASU rider to ever qualify for Zones. She finished the year with an impressive 5th place at Zones, out of 50 schools in the southeast. The ASU Hunt Seat team finished 6th overall in the region and our Dressage team finished 4th overall.

We are so excited about our awesome results last year and are looking forward to this coming show season!
