Organ Prelude Rejoice, Ye Pure In Heart . . . . Franklin Ritter

Opening Welcome and Announcements: Pastor DeWayne

* Call to Worship Bill Breitrick

One: I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. Many: Praise God! Praise God, O my soul!

One: Happy are those whose help and hope are in their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry; and who sets the prisoners free.

Many: Praise God! Praise God, O my soul. Our God lifts up those who are bowed down.

All: God will reign forever for all generations. Praise God! Praise God, O my soul!

* Passing of the Peace Pastor DeWayne

* Songs Change My Heart, O God Give Us Clean Hands

Scripture Reading: Mark 7: 1-8, 14-15, 21-23 Bill Breitrick

Now when the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?” He said to them, “Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,

‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.’ You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition.”

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.” For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

One: May God bless the reading of the word. All: Praise be to God.

Communion Liturgy Patrick Hendricks

The Invitation and Sursum Corda

One: God be with you. All: And also with you.

One: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to our God.

One: Let us give thanks to God. All: It is right to give thanks and praise to our God.

One: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere, to give thanks to our Sovereign God, who through the great teacher and prophet, Jesus, brought good news to the poor, proclaimed release to the captives, recovered sight for the blind, and let the oppressed go free. Therefore, in the company of each other, those who have gone before us, and those around the world who cry out for liberation, we declare in praise:

All: Holy, Holy, Holy, God of boundless mercy and unending love, How majestic is your name in all the earth! Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of God; Hosanna in the highest.

Words of Institution

One : Glory to God, in whose image we are made, in whom we live and breathe and have our being, and who is present with and among us, forever and always, All: Thanks be to God as we gather together to meet you, to share your meal, to celebrate your love, and

to become strengthened to serve you and our neighbor. Hallelujah!

The Do Unto Others Fund is our way of reaching out past the walls of All God’s Children and providing our support to organizations making a difference across the world. The DUO fund recipient this week is:

RECLAIM - RECLAIM works to increase access to mental health support so that queer and trans youth may reclaim their lives from oppression in all its forms. Reclaim partners with youth ages 13 – 25 who are marginalized because of their gender identity, gender expression and/or sexual orientation. In addition to providing excellent care for youth, our vision is to change the landscape of access to care for queer and trans youth. We do this through deep practitioner development, training, education and outreach, and community partnerships at the intersection of gender and racial justice.

Gracious God, proclaimer of justice, light of the world, thank you for being our help and hope as we seek to be your disciples. Thank you for executing justice in a weary and hurting land. Thank you for lifting us up when our burdens are heavy. Transform our hearts that we may live the life we sing and pray about. Help us to overcome the evil intentions of the heart that defile us and your beloved community. Help us to recognize the peace and communion that comes with life in your reign. Surround and protect us as your beloved that we may live with gracious and forgiving hearts. Make us alive through works of love, justice, and liberation. In the name of all that is holy, we pray. Amen.

If you or someone you love is in need of special prayer, enter that request into the black pew pads located at the end of every aisle and the AGC community will include them into our special prayers for this week.

“We are in constant danger of being not actors in the drama of our own lives but reactors. The fragmentary nature of our experience shatters us into fragments. Instead of being whole, most of the time we are in pieces, and we see the world in pieces, full of darkness at one moment and full of light the next. It is in Jesus, of course, and in the people whose lives have been deeply touched by Jesus, and in ourselves at those moments when we also are deeply touched by him, that we see another way of being human in this world, which is the way of wholeness. When we glimpse that wholeness in others, we recognize it immediately for what it is, and the reason we recognize it, I believe, is that no matter how much the world shatters us to pieces, we carry inside us a vision of wholeness that we sense is our true home and that beckons to us. It is part of what the book of Genesis means by saying that we are made in the image of God” —Frederick Buechner
