Season of the Holy Spirit Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinal Time, September 29, 2013

September 29th for centu-ries has traditionally been theFeast of Saint Michael the Arch-angel, Michaelmas (in Hebrew:Who is like unto God).

Before the Roman Missal(Sacramentary) of 1970 the feastof Saint Gabriel (Strength ofGod) was observed on March 24and Saint Raphael (Medicine ofGod)on October 24.

Since then, allthree of the GreatArchangels have beencelebrated together.

    Angels are pure,created spirits. The

can become. Angels have intellect and will, and are immortal. They are a vast multitude, but each is anindividual person. Archangels are one of the nine choirs of angels listed in the Bible.

St. Michael is one of the principal angels; his name was the war-cry of the good angels in the battle foughtin heaven against the enemy and his followers. Four times his name is recorded in Scripture:Daniel 10: 13The prince of the kingdom of Persia stood in my way for twenty-one days, until finally Michael,

one of the chief princes, came to help me. I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia.Daniel 12: 1At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people; It shall

be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time. At that time your people shall

escape, everyone who is found written in the book.Jude 1:9"The archangel Michael, when he argued with the devil in a dispute over the body of Moses, did

not venture to pronounce a reviling judgment upon him but said, May the Lord rebuke you!. St.Jude alludes to an ancient Jewish tradition of a dispute between Michael and Satan over the body ofMoses, an account of which is also found in the apocryphal book on the assumption of Moses (Origen,De Principiis III.2.2). St. Michael concealed the tomb of Moses; Satan, however, by disclosing it, tried toseduce the Jewish people to the sin of hero-worship. St. Michael also guards the body of Eve, accord-ing to the "Revelation of Moses" (Apocryphal Gospel).

Revelat ion 12:7-9"Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place forthem in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who de-ceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it." St.

John speaks of the great conflict at the end of time, which reflects also the battle in heaven at thebeginning of time.

According to the Fathers of the Church there is often question of St. Michael in Scripture where hisname is not mentioned. They speculate he was the cherub who stood at the gate of paradise, "to keepthe way of the tree of life" (Genesis 3:24) (although this is sometimes referred to as the Archangel Uriel Lightof God who is mentioned in other apocryphal writings), the angel through whom God published the Deca-logue to his chosen people, the angel who stood in the way against Balaam (Numbers 22:22 sqq.), the an-gel who routed the army of Sennacherib (2 Kings 19:35).

Christian tradition gives to St. Michael four offices: To fight against Satan. To rescue the souls of the faithful from the power of the enemy, especially at the hour of

death. To be the champion of God's people, the Jews in the Old Law, the Christians in the New

Testament; therefore, he was the patron of the Church, and of the orders of knights duringthe Middle Ages.

To call away from earth and bring men's souls to judgment.

Within the Hierarchy of Saints, the Blessed Virgin Mary always has the highest position, followedby St. Michael the Archangel - the Prince of Angels, because of his role in casting out Satan fromheaven, then followed by the orders of angels, then St. John the Baptist and the saints.

On October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision. The Pontiff had finished celebratingMass; then, he suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in atrance, his face ashen white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed thePrayer to St. Michael, with instructions it be said everywhere.

When asked what had happened, he explained that as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, hesuddenly heard voices - two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed tocome from near the tabernacle. As he listened, he heard the following conversation:

The guttural voice, the voice of Satan in his pride, boasted to Our Lord: "I can dest r oy your Church."The gentle voice of Our Lord: "You can? Then go ahead and do so."Satan: "To do so, I need more t ime and more power. "Our Lord: "How much t ime? How much power?"Satan: "75 to 100 years, and a greater power over t hose who will give t hemselves over t o my servi ce."Our Lord: "You have the ti me, you wil l have t he power. Do wit h them what you will ."

    Apocali psis 12:7 -9Entonces se desat una batalla en el cielo: Miguel y sus ngeles combatieron contrael dragn. Lucharon el dragn y sus ngeles, pero no pudieron vencer, y ya no hubo lugar para ellos enel cielo. El dragn grande, la antigua serpiente, conocida como el Demonio o Satans, fue expulsado;

"Nuestro Seor: "Cunt o t i emp o Cunt a pot encia?"Satans: "75 a 100 aos y un may or poder sobre q uienes han de dar a s mi smos a mi serv i cio. "Nuestro Seor: "Ti enes el t iempo, t endrs el p oder d e hacer con ell os lo que qui eras."

From our RE Director . . .This past weekend I attended Mass at Our Lady of MountCarmel Church in Carmel, Indiana. The church waspacked! Children everywhere! Everyone sang; yes, eventhe teens! The line for Holy Communion seemed like itwould never end! To be honest, I had to double check tosee if it was a Catholic Church! So I assumed-it has to bethe priest! Nope, his homily was good but not outstanding!Maybe it was the choir? Nope, just ordinary folks singing

praises to God.So why was this community so filled with passion? Theywere a welcoming community-EVERYONE was wel-comed! Here is a snippet from their bulletin.

This is a slightly revised version of a letter by an anony-mous mom sharing the importance of welcoming familiesinto our church-and not judging them when the childrenbecome unruly. As we begin the 2013-2014 ReligiousEducation year, I thought I would share this note with you.

Dear Parents of young children,You are doing something really, really important! I know itis not easy! We see you with your arms overflowing, andknow you came to church already tired. Parenting is tiring!

We watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the babyquiet, juggling the infant car seat and diaper bag, as youfind a seat. I see you wince as your child cries. I see youanxiously pull things our of your bag of tricks to try to quietthem. And we see you with your toddlers and your pre-schoolers. We watch your cringe when your children askinnocent questions in a voice that might not be an insidevoice let alone a church whisper. I hear the exasperationin our voice as you beg your child to just sit, to be quiet asyou feel everyones eyes on you. Not everyone is lookingbut I know it feels this way.

We know youre wondering, it this worth it? Why do Ibother? We know you often leave church more exhaustedthan fulfilled. But what you are doing is so important. When you are here you fill the church with a joyful noise! When you are here, the Body of Christ is more fully pre-sent! When you are here, we are reminded that this faithisnt only about quiet contemplation but coming together toworship as a community, where we share in the Word andSacrament together. When you are here, we have hopethat these pews wont be empty in 10 years when yourkids are old enough to sit quietly and behave in worship. Iknow they are learning how and why we worship now, be-fore its too late.

We see them learning. In the midst of the cries, whinesand giggles, in the midst of the crinkling of pretzel bagsand the growing pile of crumbs we see children who insiston going 2 pews up to share with someone they havenever met. We hear the echoes of Amens just a few sec-onds after the rest of the community says it together. Wewatch a boy just learning to read try to sound out thewords of mass.

We know how hard it is to do what youre doing, but wewant you to know, IT MATTERS, it matters to your chil-dren and it matters to us! Thank you!!
