Today’s readings remind us that
the gifts we have been given by God
are to be used for the greater good ...
The First Reading, from the book of Amos, warns of the danger of complacency ... or simply hanging out in our comfort zone. “Thus says the Lord the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches…” The Lord says that because of the complacency of the people, “They shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton revelry shall be done away with.”
The Lord’s message is clear: we must put the many gifts He has given us, to work!
The Second Reading from St. Paul’s letter to Timothy shows us how to free ourselves of this dangerous complacency that we are warned about in the First Reading. Notice how active St. Paul’s word choices are: “pursue,” “compete,” “lay hold,” and “keep” are the terms he uses to instruct us.
Our Lord Himself gives us a very clear illustration in today’s Gospel from Luke. He tells the rather chilling parable of the rich man who ignored poor Lazarus during their lifetimes. At the moment of the rich man’s death, he goes down to the netherworld while Lazarus is taken to the eternal joy and comfort at the bosom of Abraham. The rich man keenly regrets his complacency towards the needs of Lazarus, but it is too late for regret. His choices have played out and now the rich man will face the eternal consequences of his failure to use the gifts God gave him.
So how can we use our great powers for great good? By embracing a discipleship way of life. By putting our loving God first in all areas of our lives — in the way we spend our time, the ways we put all of our talents to use, the ways we use our financial resources. Discipleship living calls us out of our comfort zone and into commitment to the Lord and the things that matter to Him.
Last weekend, you heard of our Campaign: BUILDING DISCIPLESHIP ... because we are NOT being complacent and we ARE responding to the need for more room for our growing Ministries. Our goal for the two-year plan
is $1.2 million. We can do this if everyone does his or her part. It does not mean equal gifts. It does mean equal commitment.
We are a vibrant community! We welcome, we pray, we study, we give
and we share our faith. We are building discipleship!

CATHOLIC APOLOGETICS
The next Apologetics session is on Tuesday, October 1st. The topic is “Abortion:
Pro Life v. Pro Choice.” The session will be from 6:30-8 pm in the Church.
Attending is a great way to add support for the 40 Days for Life Program. All are
welcome to attend.
Respect Life Month Kick-Off Mass / Tuesday, October 1st
All are invited to join Father Patrick Klekas, St. Al’s GALS and the Respect
Life Committee for a very special Mass on Tuesday, October 1st. We will
begin with Exposition and Adoration from 4:15 to 5:45 pm; Reconciliation
will also be available at that time. Mass will begin at 6 pm and will conclude
with light refreshments and a chance to meet some of the many Respect Life agencies serving our
community. Representatives from 40 Days for Life, the Crisis Pregnancy Center, Project Rachel and
the Nevada Coalition Against the Death Penalty will be sharing how you can get involved. We hope
to see you there!
In honor of our patron saint, Francis of Assisi, we are collecting new or clean and
gently used warm blankets, comforters, and quilts to distr ibute to the less
fortunate and homeless this winter. We are asking for these to be brought to the
Mass you attend during the weekend of October 5-6, and place on the designated
table in the Gathering Area of the church. PLEASE DO NOT bring them to church
PRIOR to that weekend as we have no storage space for them. The blankets
will be blessed and taken to appropriate agencies on October 7th for distribution.
This project is being done in conjunction with Respect Life Month. This is a way
the parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi can emulate our patron saint and give
thanks to Our Lord for our many blessings.—Denise Azzara
