Why use a breaker instead of a fuse?

• Breakers add value to a design, providing convenience and protection.

– A circuit breaker can be quickly and easily reset after it trips and the circuit fault is corrected. If a fuse blows, a replacement fuse may not be readily available.

– A breaker helps to maintain the proper protection value in the circuit. After a fuse blows, the incorrect value fuse could be inserted.

– Some breakers can perform multiple functions

Secondary vs. Primary Circuit Breakers (TE Relay Products makes secondary)

• Primary circuit breakers can stand alone and are rated to withstand

higher currents and short circuit values.

• Secondary circuit breakers must be backed-up by a branch circuit

breaker or approved fuse. They cannot be used without other

protection in series with the secondary breaker. Secondary circuit

breakers are sometimes referred to as supplementary protectors or

component protectors.

How Thermal Breakers Work

Bimetal

Overcurrent through the specially formed bimetal causes it to heat up and snap into a position that opens the contacts (one of the contacts is attached to the bimetal). When the contacts open, an insulator slides into position between the contacts to hold them open until the breaker is manually reset.

How Magnetic Breakers Work

Coil

Armature/Trip Lever

Contacts

Overcurrent through the coil generates magnetic flux which attracts the armature and trips the breaker, opening the contacts. Manufacturer can extend time delay before tripping by using higher viscosity fluid in the breaker’s cylinder, slowing the piston.
