Reflections from Deacon Joe God’s Majestic Beauty of the Leaves

Happy Fall, My Sisters and Brothers, It’s that time of year where we are able to see God work magic in the turning of the leaves. We don’t have to do anything to help it along as it’s a product of God’s creation plan. However, most of the time we are focused on other things and don’t pay attention to the wonderment of nature. How many times have you said, next year we are going for a drive to look at the trees turning. Next year comes, you never go and again, you say, “next year”. In our gospel Jesus is trying to explain to the disciples of his pending death and resurrection, but they did not understand. Possibly, like some of us may not understand why, if the leaves die, how is it then, they come back in the spring each year? Haha, maybe because some of us did not listen in science class. When Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum and entered a house, he asked them what they were arguing about along the way. Afraid to answer, they remained silent. But Jesus knew. He knew they were discussing who, among them, was the greatest! Knowing this, Jesus educates them that those who would be first in God’s kingdom must be servants of all. To further explain what he meant, Jesus took a child and told them that to receive a child in Jesus’ name, received Him and the One who sent Him. For us to fully understand this, we must also realize that children in the first-century held no status or power; no legal rights. Thus, teaching the disciples and us, that when we serve the least of our brothers and sisters, we are serving Jesus and the One who sent Him. Jesus is calling us to the service of those in our society that hold no status, no power. Those who are in need of our love and compassion. I know that in some cases we don’t have to look too far. Are we willing to listen to Jesus and answer His call? I promise that if you listen to Jesus and serve in some act of charity, you would be doing what God expects of us. Performing acts of charity, taking care of someone in need is our path to salvation. Jesus teaches that God’s judgment of us will be based on this criterion alone. So,…are you going to do it? You know, go for that drive to listen and see God’s majestic beauty of nature; the wind blowing against the trees, watch the leaves dropping on the sidewalk or the mountain pass; or are we just going to throw our arms up and say, “maybe next year”? May God bless us all,

Deacon Joe

Is God calling you to be a Deacon? What distinguishes the permanent deacon from the lay person is that the permanent deacon, who may be married , is a member of the clergy and shares in the hierarchy of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He has been ordained to assist the bishop in his doctrinal, sacramental and charitable ministry.

“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” (M 9:35)

Jesus teaches us that we are called in Stewardship to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gi s in the service of God.
