plants. Treating now would cause more decomposition, certainlyresulting in significant fish kills.

So what do we do? We hope for cooler, longer nights. We hopefor some rains and some windy days. And we put together a planfor 2021. Treating water lilies a little earlier in the summer, andagain treating the curly-leaf first thing in spring is a good startingpoint.

GARDENERS OF THE SHORESHosta Garden Visit

When members signed-up to tour Pennyand Carl Fulkerson’s Hosta Garden inKildeer, little did they know what surprises

were in store! As they approached the property they viewed anine-level waterfall gurgling into a pond surrounded with colorfulflowers and a shade bed with a variety of hostas. The tour beganwith the first of many hosta beds where we were greeted by aten-foot-tall giraffe carved from a tree. A little further on theysaw one of several “fairy-gardens” set into the surroundingwoods which made an enchanting display. Next came a nine-foot crocodile carved from a horizontal tree, around the cornerfrom a leopard sneaking down a tree trunk carved by neighbor,Eric Widitz, who specializes in garden art. On and on throughfoot-paths and over foot-bridges they were charmed by the wideassortment of trees, plants, hostas and garden art incorporatedinto the surroundings—a true labor of love by Penny and Carl.

Gardeners of the Shores always encourage new members andnew ideas. To join Gardeners, send $25 yearly dues to Treasurer,Donna Casey, 401A Deer Trail Hill, Lake Barrington, IL 60010.(Make checks payable to Gardeners of the Shores.)

ARCHITECTURE COMMISSIONDIFFERENT CONDOS, DIFFERENT RULES

You know by now that you need to fill out an Application, assemble everything required in it, and have it approved forexterior projects here at LBS. These are all available online atlakebarringtonshores.org. But, some of these projects have dif-ferent requirements depending on which Condo Associationyou live in.

If you need to replace any of your doors, a fence, a privacy wallor want to change the size of your balcony or deck, you’ll needto check with your own condo board to find out how they dealwith these projects. For example: Some condos require you topay to replace your fence or the privacy wall between your unitand another, but some do that for you. Some have very strictguidelines about what sort of front door you can put it, or whatcolor it can be, but others allow a good deal more freedom ofchoice. Some condos allow you to expand your deck or balcony, and some don’t allow any expansions at all. All condos specifyonly one specific style of garage door, but some pay for newgarage doors while others require homeowners to replace themthemselves.

There are other differences in condo rules, too. Your next-doorneighbor, who might live in a different condo, could be allowedto have a fire pit in their courtyard, but if you put one in yours, your condo board could make you remove it.

It’s always a good idea to check before you sign any contractsto do this kind of work. Imagine if you found later that your condowould have paid for your fence! You have a say in what yourCondo Board decides about these things: Go to your monthlyboard meetings, find out what the rules are, and make your voiceheard.

LAKE AND PONDS COMMISSION2020. This is the strangest year, from Covid-19 to the 2ndwarmest year on record. It has been challenging on many fronts.

Each year, I seem to remark that “this is an unusual year.” But thisone is really, very unusual. The early summer treatment that wedid for the curly-leaf pondweed and algae, worked very well tokeep the lake usable. But the mid-summer heat has led to veryhigh growth of water lilies. The thread-leaf pondweed that wassuch a problem last year, has been less of a problem this year, butis now starting to break down, creating lots of work for the teammanaging the beach. The very high air temperatures, especially atnight, has raised the lake temperatures to very high levels.

The high water temperatures are very stressful on a lake. Whena lake is cool, it can hold much more dissolved oxygen thanwhen it is hot. When plants and algae die off, the decompositionprocess consumes dissolved oxygen. When the dissolved oxygenin water drop below 5.0 mg/l, the fisheries are put under greatstress. If the dissolved oxygen levels drop below that, even for afew hours, it can result in fish kills. Unfortunately, water temper-atures are just too warm to do any chemical treatments of

In 1959, riskingeverything from her small legacy, she finds herself in a small seaside town of Suffolk, England, attempting to make her dreama reality. The town has been without a bookstore for a hundredyears. One would think the welcoming committee would be outto greet her.
