The Redeemer Reporter September 2018 Hello Redeemer, Like all of you we have had a busy summer and it is hard to believe the summer is over and kids are back in school. I want to thank the volunteers who have helped ensure our services have flowed well with Kens absence. In the coming months your council will be focusing in three areas. One will be trying to define what the future looks like for Redeemer. Another will be developing our budget for 2019. The other will be leading an initiative to make some much needed capital repairs to our roof and building. If you are interested in serving on a capital fund raising or project subcommittee please let me or another council member know. Take care, John Howard A note from Council During fellowship me on September 9th, Ingrid Finstuen will give a presentaon about Healthy Churches, Faithful Pastors: Covenant Expectaons for Thriving Together by David A. Keck. Instead of having the whole congregaon read the book, Ingrid will cover the main points, which can serve as a framework for further conversaon together. Council members will be reading it as part of their work, and when finished, their copies will be available in the office for people to borrow. If you would like to acquire your own copy, you can order one in print or electronic form online at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

The Redeemer Reporter September 2018

Hello Redeemer,

Like all of you we have had a busy summer and it is hard to believe the summer is over and kids are back in school. I want to thank the volunteers who have helped ensure our services have flowed well with Ken’s absence.

Take care,

John Howard

— A note from Council —

During fellowship time on September 9th, Ingrid Finstuen will give a presentation about Healthy Churches, Faithful Pastors:

Covenant Expectations for Thriving Together by David A. Keck. Instead of having the whole congregation read the

book, Ingrid will cover the main points, which can serve as a framework for further conversation together. Council

members will be reading it as part of their work, and when finished, their copies will be available in the office for

people to borrow. If you would like to acquire your own copy, you can order one in print or electronic form online at

Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

The people of Redeemer have done it again!

Martin Luther wrote a sermon in 1526 where he states, “Faith is due to God alone: faith receives divine works that God alone can do, and these works of God we can receive alone through faith. Then we should be busy for our neighbors’ sake and direct

our works toward them, that these works may serve them.”

Redeemer has been busy for our neighbors’ sake by generously contributing school supplies to our sister church, Grace Lutheran in Horseshoe Bend. Thank you, thank

you, thank you for your ongoing works of faith in service.

Upcoming events for the congregation during

Pastor Ken’s Sabbatical

-On September 16th Pastor Dave Deckard from Shepherd of the Valley will be leading our worship and then leading the first of three conversations about “Expectations” during the fellowship time.

-On September 30 Pastor Meggan Manlove from Trinity Lutheran in Nampa will be leading our worship and leading the second conversation about “Expectations” during fellowship.

-On October 14th Pastor Mike Sager from Hope Lutheran in Eagle will lead our worship and then lead the third conversation about “Expectations” during fellowship.

This topic is drawn from a quote by Mark Hanson, former presiding bishop of the ELCA, “Unexpressed expectations are resentments in waiting.” These conversations are part of our congregational “homework” during Pastor Ken’s sabbatical.

As we focus some time and energy around expectations at this time the hope is that both Pastor Ken and the community of Redeemer Lutheran will be able to more clearly articulate our expectations of one another. We will have a more solid knowledge of who we are as a church amid the changing world following the sabbatical. As we move forward into our next season together we hope there will be no resentments in waiting.

First Thursday Lunch will be on

September 6th We begin at 12:00p.m. with soup, breads, and desserts. The cost is $2.00 per person and children are free. Bring a friend and join us

for good food and great fellowship.

Bible Study—11am on

Thursdays

The format for the study is quite simple. We open in

prayer asking for the Spirit to guide us in our study. Then we read a passage and discuss.

What stood out to us?

What do we hear God saying to us today?

What questions does it raise?

As the discussion lessens and time allows we continue by reading another passage. This type of study does not require any prep work to join. Simply come and we will read the Bible together. Please consider joining us.

Sunday, September 9th,

we will resume

two worship services

8:30am —Worship

9:30am — Fellowship

10:30am —Worship

Ministry of the Month

St. Vincent de Paul

Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive

Fall is almost here and time to start planning for the Holidays. Redeemer will again assist

St. Vincent de Paul in their annual Thanksgiving Food Basket drive. Last year 2300 baskets were distributed to families in need. Among those receiving baskets were 250 families from

the Boise School District. This year along with 250 Boise School District families, baskets will also be given to 250 families from the West Ada School District. We are asking for cash

donations so St. Vincent de Paul can purchase turkeys and canned goods to fill these baskets. Please help in this community effort to provide a Thanksgiving meal for our local families and

school children in need.

Thank-you,

Kari Spencer
